I would advise to stick to only the naturally gluten-free menu items and not any that require modification. They brought out deep fried potatoes rather than sautéed, and mussels with a big piece of bread right inside the bowl. We noticed the mussels but did not catch the potatoes until after we had eaten. Restaurant is very dimly lit and server assured us everything was gf, but the modifications were clearly not made and we were sick within the hour.
We went for lunch around 2 pm so not super crowded. They marked everything that could be made gluten free. They had plenty of options that my daughter liked. She ordered the steak and egg without the egg (two of those) patatas bravas and serrano ham for appetizer. Everyone else in my family also loved it.
Went again, this time for dinner. Excellent service, knowledgable about celiac/gluten free. Great atmosphere with very good food.
This place is terrific! Our server asked about allergies up front, and when I said gluten, she modified a menu and gave us the copy to keep. She was very knowledgeable. The food and the atmosphere are wonderful! My wife and I split a charcuterie & cheese (Jamon Serrano, soppressata, mahon), tapas (potato tortilla, chorizo w/ sweet & sour figs, pork belly), and chocolate cake for dessert. Highly recommend. We’ll be back!
I’ve been to Barcelona now a number of times and have had an amazing experience each time. They will mark what you can and cannot eat in the menu, and are very good about communicating with the kitchen. The only downside is they have no separate fryer but they will do the dish in the oven if possible!
Dined at the bar. Service was slow at first, but bartender 100% turned it around and we enjoyed our visit very much. We ate appetizers only, not dinner entrees. Bartender was very helpful and knowledgeable about marking the menu for GF options and crossing out others. Highly recommended and delicious: Eggplant, bacon wrapped dates, GF chocolate "cake" which was like a thick pudding texture. Not recommended: Trout was dry. Potato tortillas was actually seemingly a pie shaped slice of scalloped potatoes, but tasted okay.
Waiter was very knowledgeable about cross contamination and every dish that contained gluten. She crossed out all the things I could not eat, things that were CC risk but could be prepared differently to avoid that, etc. The paella salvaje was gluten free and so delicious! So many options here.
My husband and I had originally tried this place but at their Brookline, MA location. When we realized there was also one in Dallas, we were ecstatic.
This place is so good. Like really really good. They have TONS of gluten free options on their menu and the servers seem to be knowledgeable.
This place is fabulous!!
Overall a fairly safe place to eat. It is really hectic in there and you need to stay attentive though. Waiter marked up the menu - some things are never safe, some can be sautéed instead (cooked separate is how I understood it), and some are always safe.
The main issue is that the waiter doesn’t bring the food, the food runners do. They usually don’t say anything - drop plates and run / no time for question or confirmation (if you do catch them, often they don’t know anyway).
I decided to have faith. Luckily when one dish was brought over incorrectly, seconds before eating it the waiter caught it and stopped me. I thanked him, he took the wrong dish (kale salad w a gluten topper), and the small plate I had with several things on it since it was now cross contaminated.
I am overall not sure if I got anything contaminated, I didn’t feel bad but also wasn’t perfect - though overall felt ok about the experience.
My suggestion for the restaurant is to:
1. Have food runners clearly denote when something is made safe for allergies or celiac, or require servers/mgrs to bring specialty food instead of it’s not possible.
2. Don’t mark up the menu every time by hand. Just make a celiac version once and post it and educate the staff.
3. When somebody does screw up, don’t charge the customer for it. In fact the small plate had half of the other dishes on it - it all went in the trash after and only the kale salad was remade.
All in all room for improvement but the server did their best under the restaurants policies!
The vibe is cool. The drinks are great. The food tastes pretty good. However, from a gluten perspective, this place is not safe. The menus are not marked and they scratch items you can have.
I’ve been here a few times and have gotten sick each time. My wife likes it so I was willing to go back.
They serve a lot of their food on wooden plates which aren’t safe for gluten because it gets absorbed into the wood. I’m surprised the safety ratings by others is so high.
