I’ve always had great experiences with Big Wheel. They take great care to train their employees about cross contact and have a separate area for prepping gluten free meals. This was the first place I went to after diagnosis and after six months of not eating in restaurants. The employee working was super knowledgeable and explained all the steps they take in great detail. Also love that they buy local as much as possible and give back to the community.

The chicken burger is no longer safe gluten free (at all, not just cross contamination), drastically limiting the options. This is true for all the locations in the city.

Ordered a crispy chicken burger for the first time since diagnosis. They were very comfortable with the Allergy and everything came out with a special gluten-free sticker.

This place is hit-and-miss. Before I ate there the first time, I called and spoke with someone at the restaurant about how they manage cross-contamination issues. The person assured me that they have a dedicated fryer, that they have two nozzles for their milkshakes so that only one nozzle is ever used with their gluten-containing milkshakes, and that they have one person putting together all gluten-free orders. I was also told that they have "celiac" button on their register so that way the kitchen is definitely aware when they are preparing food for someone with celiac. That all sounded great, but the follow-through has not always been there. For starters, strangely, I've occasionally gotten pushback when I've let the cashier know that I'm celiac and have asked them to make sure it's noted on the bill, with the argument they've offered being that everything I'm ordering is already gluten-free so why bother... Frustrating. I've also found that despite being assured that my order will be placed on a separate tray from my husband's gluten-containing order, it usually isn't and I have to ask them to make me a new order. Lastly, and most importantly, there are times that I've eaten there and haven't felt great afterwards, but also haven't felt so bad that I would definitely be able to attribute it to being glutened.
Given my uncertainty about this place, after I purchased a Nima gluten sensor, I decided to test both the fries and the chocolate milkshake I usually get when I'm at this restaurant. The fries came back as gluten-free. Unfortunately, the chocolate milkshake came back as containing gluten. I let someone at the restaurant know about the gluten-containing milkshake and he was apologetic and offered to remake it for me or to give me a refund. I took the refund. I wouldn't trust the milkshakes again because the positive test result suggests to me that either a) the ice cream they are using contains trace amounts of gluten, or b) they're actually not as careful distinguishing between the two milkshake nozzles as I was led to believe.
I noticed that they have a certificate from the local celiac association on their wall, which I think may give a false sense of security. While they might have good practices in theory, in reality they don't seem to be following them in their entirety.

Can’t say enough about how great this place is for celiacs. Take out burgers and fries - very knowledgeable staff with procedures for cross contamination. A regular spot for me and highly recommend.

The best gluten free poutine I've ever had!! Fries in their own fryer and the gravy is always GF so I don't have to stress when I order from there.

I eat at the cook street location all the time without issue. I appreciate seeing expanded and new menu items and protocols every few months. Dedicated fryer and prep area, special packaging for gf items, and careful staff!

I ate a burger only at the Blanshard location without any reaction! Then I ate a burger and fries (I was assured they were celiac friendly) at the Esquimalt location and within 20 minutes I was running to the bathroom. Definitely glutened. :(
Great place for our daughter. Dairy and Wheat free burger and fries. Staff were very friendly and kind ... kitchen even cleaned area when prepared her burger.
Love it! Almost the entire menu is gluten free. Friendly staff.

I have always loved Big Wheel as they are one of the only places in Victoria to offer a gluten free crispy chicken burger. It's very disappointing to now see that they are removing the chicken burger from being gluten free. Their regular burgers and okay but not that special, and their fries are good, but it's too bad they are no longer going to offer the chicken one gluten free. I understand the decision for financial reasons but it is very disappointing for the celiac community here

Disappointed to learn of their change of heart regarding offering gf chicken burgers- new chicken burger will be breaded in gluten. Still will have other gf offerings and a dedicated fryer but still disappointing.
