When I mentioned to my server that I had celiac she went and got one of the cooks who asked if I would like a meal prepared separately in the back so I knew nothing had touched it. He was very accommodating and let me chose what ever I would like.
I came in knowing I would have to ask for a menu, however the waiter didn't seem to care whether or not I was gluten intolerant. I did order the chicken meal with rice pilaf and fresh fruit, but for the $$$ we spent it could have been much better. Hubby got the buffet and ate almost nothing. Almost everything on the buffet was fried, so if you are trying to eat a healthier lifestyle, this is not the place to go. The atmosphere was terrible.
I told the server that I was gluten free. The server had a cook walk me down the buffet explaining what was gluten free. The cook said he would fix some baked flounder if i didn't like the parmesan crusted flounder. Food was excellent.
Excellent customer service and so accommodating. Staff will have the chef come and walk you down the buffet explaining what you can and can not have. They will even prepare you something from the kitchen if you don't want the buffet. We will be returning again!
Some advice: don't trust the buffet, ask for a menu - it will be SO much fresher, cooked by the chef specifically for someone with an intolerance, and not overpriced. Server was fairly knowledgeable and quickly offered to ask the chef of anything he wasn't sure of. He brought me a copy of the menu with the gluten free items marked on it. I had a really delicious broiled mahi with a mango sauce on the side, and a baked potato and steamed zucchini. My meal did come with a salad from the salad bar, and unfortunately only one dressing (Italian) was gluten free.
Great food for a buffet. No gluten free menu though server did offer to have chef walk the line with us. Great as long as you stick to veggies and steamed seafood options. No gf desserts.
Got glutened here. Cross contamination. The staff is not knowledgeable about gluten cross contamination, neither is the manager. “GF” offerings on buffet next to wheat items. Public self serves from buffet, mixing spoons, and of course coming in contact with glutened plates.
The waitress had the manager come talk to us about what was gluten free. He offered to have dishes made in the kitchen for me and offered me gf snicker doodle cookies, that weren’t put out on the dessert bar. I was confused about the salad dressing though. Their website said the Blue cheese and thousand island was gf but the manager said everything BUT blue cheese and thousand island was. I really wanted a salad but didn’t even bother risking it. There were many gf options, was very pleased. Oh, don’t bother asking any of the other food staff about gf items, they were clueless.
EXCELLANT! EXCELLANT! EXCELLANT! We have NEVER felt so comfortable eating out with Celiacs!! My family just returned from a vacation in Myrtle Beach, and I have to write this review of Captain George’s seafood buffet. Our daughter has Celiac disease, and it is very hard to find a restaurant where she can enjoy a nice meal. Many places claim to have a gluten-free menu, which to them means a salad without the croutons. We read reviews of the Captain’s which claimed the manager gives gluten-free eaters a tour of the buffet, explaining what does and does not contain gluten. I thought, “there’s no way a manager of a big place will take the time to do that”. How wrong I was. The manager, John Craft, went above and beyond to ensure that our daughter had a great meal. He took her on the tour of the buffet line, showed her everything she could eat, brought her out a plate of everything she chose from the buffet that was made separately, so there would be NO cross-contanimation, then also brought her a huge plate of specially prepared shrimp and scallops, and when she was done with the buffet, provided a special dessert of warm Udi GFcookies with ice cream. His attentiveness and caring made the meal very special. As we were leaving, he took the time to give us the names of other places in the area where we could be sure of getting a great gluten-free meal. And if you aren’t worried about gluten, the entire buffet is fantastic. All the crab legs you want, different kinds of shrimp, fish, vegetables and a great array of desserts. If we ever go back to Myrtle Beach, we will be going back to Captain George’s.
This is the best celiac service I’ve ever received. The waitress introduced the manager to me and then he sat with us to answer all our questions before taking our order himself. He then proceeded to make part of our meal himself as he let us know that they dedicate space for customers with very specific needs. He wanted to make sure there was no cross contamination at all and continued to follow up with us throughout the meal. At the end he offered to make a list of places he and his wife (who also has celiac disease) trust in Myrtle as places that do a good job of taking care of my specific dietary needs. Josh was awesome!!!! We will eat here whenever we come to Myrtle!!!
I have to say, this was without a doubt, the single BEST dining experience I have had as a Celiac! Within minutes of walking in (got there at opening time of 3pm) we were greeted by the manager. He asked if we had ever been there before. My response was yes, over 25 years ago, and pre gluten free days. He immediately told me he would go over the menu/tables with me personally in order to make sure I knew what was safe and what was not! There was one other customer who over heard the conversation, and asked if she could join us. Absolutely!! The manager went on to go through every table/item and explain what was GF and what was not. WAY too many items to list, but just about everything except the steamed items contained a margarine that was NOT GF. What was great about the experience was that he offered to make most of the single food items GF separately for me if I so desired! I love clams/muscles/crab/shrimp and was quite happy with just that. They offered to make a separate salad, but I asked for the steamed green beans and sauteed mushrooms, of which they brought HUGE gf servings right to my table! The manager also personally made a cocktail sauce gf for me as well! There was GF chocolate pudding and rice pudding if you could muster a dessert! While it was a limited menu, if you are a seafood lover, there is plenty for you to get your money's worth! My only suggestion to them would be to make the simple change from using the tainted margarine over to a GF source! It would open up the menu even more and they would not have to cater quite as much to individuals! Great experience! Great service! 5+ Stars!! We were traveling with a large group, with varying ages and opinions; so I did a lot of research prior to selecting Captain George's for our seafood dinner. More than any buffet in the area, most of the reviews I read were positive and the selling point for me was the g-free information listed right on the website. We were seated right away and although our waiter was not the friendliest during our meal, we had our drinks within minutes & they were never empty! Now for the gluten free: the manager walked me around and pointed out every gluten free option on the vast buffet and even provided a brief description on some of the dishes. He also offered a gluten free option of many of the "glutened" dishes and had them made special. I didn't feel worried about cross contamination like many other buffets, the glutened items were not near the g-free items, the fried foods were completely separate. The manager was very knowledgeable on the gluten free lifestyle! Bring your appetite, since they made me special foods I felt awful not eating it all...so much food! I had a smorgasbord! It is pretty pricey though..$40 a person...but you do get a seafood feast! If you are looking for a seafood buffet in Myrtle Beach...Captain George's is your best choice for everyone!
The manager personally escorted me to the buffet and showed me everything that was celiac friendly. He also offered to cook some dishes in the kitchen without the gluten sauces. One dish that he had made was this huge plate of broiled scallops and shrimp. He also baked 2 Udi's rolls for me too and offered some Udi's cookies for dessert! Everyone from the manager to the waitresses were unbelievably kind and knowledgeable regarding Celiac issues. They offered a wonderful dining experience without any fear of being "glutenized"! Lastly, the amount of caring and knowledge is very apparent when the manager told me about the barbecued items. The sauce they use has gluten but if you would like some ribs or other barbecued meat, they will cook it separately in the kitchen. The manager felt bad about serving plain "barbecued " meat, so he went out and bought a gluten free barbecue sauce. Talk about dedication!! Captain George's once again proved to be one of the best dining experiences for a Celiac and her understanding husband who is NOT Celiac! Thank you!
Wonderful buffet that met my girlfriends celiac needs! Asked for manger, he should get around the buffet then proceeded to bring out several plates of food that she wanted from the back to avoid cross contamination! Manager Josh was great. Highly recommend this place!
My husband has to eat GF, so we are very careful when we go out to eat. We would definitely go back here, it was great. We read great things about the buffet. Sarah M, our server, had a chef come out and take my husband around the buffet to show him what was safe. Everything was perfect and delicious.
Very, very knowledgeable about celiac disease. We informed our waitress when we arrived that someone in our party had celiac. The manager came over and took this person around the entire buffet to let her know which food she can eat. On top of walking her around, he also went to the back and prepared her other food to make it gluten friendly. They have gluten free tools, desserts, etc. This was the best and most knowledgeable restaurant we have been to. Highly recommend to anyone with celiac.
Manager, Jake, came to our table and introduced himself when our server told him 2 ppl in our party were GF so he could go over the menu. Chose to order off menu instead of buffet, just personal preference. Crab legs, grilled shrimp and baked potato, all very good, no issues.
very knowledgeable and felt safe eating what was pointed out as being gluten free. however, I felt it was over priced for what I could get and the quality of food wasn't anything special. even my husband, who can eat gluten felt the food wasn't worth the price.
I have never been more impressed with the knowledge and attentiveness of a restaurant, then I was with Captain George's. The manager walked me through the buffet lines instructing me what I could eat and what to stay away from. As he was explain the items to me, he would ask me if I wanted this or that....Because he was going to make what I wanted in the kitchen. The food was wonderful, not to mention it was all you could eat crab legs. I was even able to get dessert and bread! It truly was a blessing. I will definitely seek out this family owned restaurant in their 4 various locations.
My family visited Wilmington, NC and we were told we just had to make the drive to Captain George's in Myrtle Beach, SC. It was a 1 1/2 drive for us and having a teenage son who has celiac, we checked the website first. To our pleasant surprise, they had information on the front page, regarding their gluten-free options! So, off we went! Upon arrival, we got seated and as suggested, we asked our server if we could speak with the manager regarding our son and his dietary needs. Josh, the manager, came to our table, spoke with our son and took him on a tour of the buffets to show him what he could and couldn't eat. After his trip through the buffet line, he sat down and within a short time, Josh brought out a HUGE piece of prime rib, seasoned scallops AND gluten-free dinner rolls, just for our son!!! Needless to say, the kiddo was in heaven! He even got to have several desserts. Josh was incredibly kind, informative and checked on our table several times throughout our time there. What an awesome experience and the food was enjoyed by us ALL! When we make it back to Wilmington, we will definitely be making the 1 1/2 drive to see Josh at Captain George's again!
First time coming and loved my experience! We were sat in the more intimate Williamsburg room, which was very pretty. The servers were super nice and attentive, and one of the chefs, Monty, came out to walk me through what I could eat on the buffet since I can't have gluten.
The service was exceptionally they had a assistant manager come to our table and walk us through the buffet what I could eat and can't. There were a lot of choices but I don't really care for boiled fish, shrimp, scallops. But very knowledgeable wait staff.
First, I'm not one to leave a review , but our experience was stellar tonight at Captain George's. I have one child with peanut allergies and one with Celiac Disease. Josh, the manager, went far above and beyond any dining out experience we have ever had. He gave the kids a tour of the buffet showing which foods were safe for their individual allergies. My daughter decided to have salad and steak instead of the buffet and they were personally prepared by Josh himself. When I told him my son was having crab legs for the first time he gave a personal lesson. The food was delicious! And the experience was beyond 5 star. Eating out with allergies isn't always enjoyable, if you have to avoid gluten you can feel confident that the Myrtle Beach Captain George's is a fantastic choice!
The "gluten free" food is on shared bars with gluten food. it was difficult to find the gluten. free options. I ended up walking around with their website pulled up on my phone. my husband had an issue with some of the food. It didn't sit well, and caused him to get sick while we were there. We attempted to handle things privately. Because we didn't make a scene, the manager, possibly owner, refused to believe that it was their food. He questioned the timing of my husband getting sick and accused him of claiming to be sick to get a lower bill. My husband was in the bathroom vomiting when the bill came. The man pulled our receipt to figure out how long we had been there. Then told us we were there way too long and accused my husband of just over eating. My husband had one plate of food. Honestly, the man was rude. My husband just wanted to let the guy know that something made him sick, then pay our bill, so we could leave. This manager decided to escalate things with a semi raised voice, until he was shown a picture of my husbands vomit in their bathroom. The guy seriously wouldn't drop it. he even tried to say my husband was lying because we didn't make a scene. Then he, the manager, turned around and made a scene. The manager kept cutting my husband off and telling him that he goes to the pier every morning to get fresh sea food. That's great and all, but my husband doesn't eat sea food. He was eating the prime rib, vegetables, Mac and cheese, and BBQ. He ended up discounting my husbands meal, but the man was rude and actually scared me. Why wouldn't a manager want to know that their food made a customer sick? I don't understand.
9/4/2016. My wife and I decided to go to Captain George restaurant while in Myrtle Beach over the Labor Day weekend after a recommendation by one of my relatives. We both checked the gluten free app for menu choices. We both noticed a few people talked about how helpful the manager Mr. Craft was in helping them in their selection of food choices. Mr. Craft was unbelievable in his knowledge of people with a gluten sensitivity. He personally took the time to walk me through the food choices as he did with others on this app. The was great. Mr. Craft personally brought gluten free rolls, ribs, and cocktail sauce to our table for me. Mr. Craft, if you read this review, my wife and I would like to thank you and your staff for a great dinner. I didn't think I would be able to ever eat seafood at restaurant again, but you changed that for a evening. 5 stars for Mr. Craft.
If you love seafood, this is the place to come. However, if it's not your favorite, I'd skip it. The manager came and walked me around the buffet telling me what I could have and not have. However, the gluten items are placed directly next to the gluten free items, which made me a bit nervous. Other customers don't know not to use the same tongs/spoons or not to drop a gluten item into the gluten free. I'd like to see more of a separation of the items. Otherwise, it was good.
The food was amazing. Matt the Manager came out and walked me through everything I could eat. Also brought food from the kitchen to ensure that in case people might have cross contaminated by using same utensils on buffet. The gf dessert was great as well. They really understood Celiac and I had a great meal out!
My daughter and I have celiac disease and the manager, Josh Craft was very nice and helpful. He took us through the buffet and showed us which items were gluten free and which ones were not. the gluten free items were separated from the non gluten free items, so cross contamination was not an issue. He even prepared us our own gluten free cocktail sauce from the kitchen and gluten free cookies for dessert. this is the best gluten free dining experience I've ever had.
My mom and I have celiac disease and the manager Josh craft came over to our table and walked us through the buffet. He was very kind and took the time to point out everything we could and couldn't eat. He checked on us throughout the meal and he also made us food in the back that we couldn't have on the buffet with sauces. At the end of the meal he came over and recommended other celiac friendly restaurants during our stay here.
My son who is celiac hardly ever gets to eat out so this was a special treat because he is extremely sensitive to cross contamination. The manager was very helpful and brought out a special plate with fries, gf rolls and scallops sautéed in addition to the buffet items he showed us. Then he brought out gf cookies at the end of the meal with ice cream. The look on my son's face was priceless at all the food he could eat!
I am a celiac and can tolerate zero gluten, and have never felt safer eating at a restaurant. The staff was very knowledgable, and a manager walked me through the buffet to let me know which options were gluten free. There were so many choices! Food was great, and I did not get sick!
My husband has celiac disease and can't have ANY gluten. We don't cheat or risk it. We asked about GF items while being seated. Moments later a manager? named Matthew showed up at our table, walked my husband through the entire buffet and discussed the items. Then they made him anything he wanted as a special order so it wasn't contaminated. They served gf bread and cookies. Everyone was knowledgeable and helpful. My husband really enjoyed his meal!!

As soon as I told our waitress I had celiac, she immediately went to go get the manager. The manager, Josh, then went and showed me around the buffet pointing out what was safe for me to eat. Not only was this incredibly assuring for me that what I was eating was gluten free,but Josh showed a knowledge of the condition and was extremely compassionate. Great service and would recommend to those with similar allergies/conditions!
We ate here last year on vacation and Josh, the manager, was AMAZING!! He walked through all the gluten free items on the buffet and had food prepared for me so I could enjoy the scallops and other seafood options. We will be vacationing again soon and plan to eat here at least once!!
I am a celiac. Joe, the Manager walked me through the buffet and clearly identified what I could and could not eat. There were plenty of choices! In addition he arranged to have a prime rib steak and a plate of sautéed shrimp and scallops made specially for me. Food was awesome. I over ate but did not get sick. Highly recommend!
amazing service! our server Joe showed me everything safe and unsafe on the buffet and even explained seasonings used! he also offered to make me anything else i wanted on the buffet that looked queationable or that could be easily adapted to be gf. he brought out warm gluten free bread and warm cookies for me to take with me or eat there! We had a wonderful dinner and for the first time ever I felt safe eating out! and at a buffet of all places!
We have a family of 5 and 3 of us have celiac so eating out is pretty difficult! We never do buffets because that is being super dangerous. However we decided to try Captain George's. AMAZING!!! Our waiter immediately went and got the manger who came out and pulled a chair up at our table to talk through the buffet. After making a list of the things that he was going to specially make in the back (bread, cookies, safe cocktail sauce, and a huge plate of scallops, shrimp, and tilapia), he took us on a tour of the buffet pointing what was safe and what to stay away from! Amazing service, very friendly and knowledgeable, and took his time to go through everything and answer questions. Definitely put this on your seafood dining list for Myrtle Beach!
Absolutely amazing! Best glutenfree seafood ever! The manager came out and sat down and explained everything to us! He then came and gave us a personal tour of the buffet and made us feel comfortable. I don't usually buffets but this was incredible. He brought us gf rolls, and amazing plate of gf shrimp, tilapia, scallops. when we were about ready to burst he brought hot snicker doodle cookies.
Exceeded my expectations! Server Debbie clued in immediately with my question about a dish. She alerted John L. who gave a tour of the buffet and had gluten free rolls delivered to my table. Warm rolls with butter! Wow! Then I enjoy the numerous suggested items from the buffet. Yum! Not only had we given up on patronizing another buffet in Myrtle Beach because of quality (husband isn't gluten free). I didn't need to fear a mistake and we both agreed everything was fresh, tasty and delightful. Debbie gave excellent service though we arrived near the end of the rush. Then Josh delivered warm, gooey chocolate chip cookies for my dessert! I got to enjoy dessert at a buffet! Yes, it exceeded both our expectations for quality, service and gluten free options. Thank you Debbie, John L. and Josh. Josh what a great effort and great team you have developed. We will be back.
We came here with high expectations, maybe we just got a poor waitress. We told her my wife was celiac, she said that usually the manager comes out to explain the gf options. Then she did not get him. We wanted to order from a menu. be aware that the buffet is $32, & if you want to order from a menu the very few entries are $26 and up. The message we got is they really want you to get the Buffett. We had not had in mind spending up towards &200. So we left cash for the drinks and left for hard rock across the street . Had a wonderful experience there (cost $50).
Management makes it a point to know about allergies and will give you a personal walk through of the entire buffet going item by item showing you what's safe or not. They even brought me a few pieces of Udi's bread that weren't on the menu.
Best celiac friendly place ever. Josh gave us a personal tour of the buffet letting me know what I could and could not have. John had a special plate of shrimp and scallops made for me from the kitchen. He also had gluten free cookies and rolls brought out to the table for my daughter. My family and I will now make this a regular stop when we come to MB. The service was outstanding and the managers truly care.
Josh Kraft made out visit outstanding! He gave a gluten allergy tour and made sure everything my wife chose was gluten free. He went out of his way in this regard. Captain George's is by far the best buffet on the Grand Strand. We make it a regular stop when on vacation in Myrtle. Thanks again Josh! Your efforts were appreciated!
Decided to go based on the reviews. When I asked for a menu I was told the buffet was my only option. There was no possibility if a chef for clarification. My waitress actually recommended the macaroni and cheese for my GF granddaughter. While the crab legs were delicious, I felt like I was taking my life in my hands with everything else. Not worth the risk!
I could not find a better place that would cater to all my needs beside Celiac I'm also allergic to Casein witch makes it even harder for me to eat out. Josh one of the manager was introduced to me by our waitress Ruby. They have made my family dining experience a memorable one. Josh walked me trough the entire buffet area and basically went over every item available for me and my wife and for my son who's also allergic to nuts, he offered to individually cook to order items of my choice. He even brought us gluten free Udi's dinner rolls and non dairy spread. I highly recommend Captain George's to anyone with allergies. Definitely coming back here.
My best experience eating out with Celiac Disease! One of the managers Josh came to my table and explained what I could eat from the buffet and showed me a menu as well. We walked around the buffet area and he pointed out what I could eat. Anything that is GF on the buffet could be made in the back to avoid cross contamination. Josh even gave me Udi's dinner rolls and snickerdoodle cookies. Great food and amazing service. Captain George's is the place to go for gluten free dining on the grand strand.
This place was excellent at handling my allergy! The manager, John, was very knowledgable about gluten allergies and even walked me up and down the buffet showing me what foods I could and couldn't eat. He even brought me some items from the kitchen prepared gluten free when I couldn't have them off the buffet. They even had Udi's brand rolls and cookies for me! I am newly diagnosed, but this is the best experience I've had so far!
