We have been going here for years with my celiac daughter. Staff is super friendly and very willing to accommodate allergies. They have a separate section for all toppings and use a single use plastic spoon to add toppings when you say you have an allergy. We do not ever use the hard ice cream as there is too much risk for cross-contamination
Would not recommend. The staff had no allergen knowledge and when they finally got me a diagram that marked allergens, it had none of the flavors that were actually in the shop. I don't blame the staff but I do blame the management for not training them properly! I used to be able to easily look up ingredients of specific flavors on the Carvel website, but they've since changed it and I wasn't able to find anything. The only plus was that they happened to have one gluten free ice cream cake pre made in the store which had been prepped carefully. Great ice cream but it's a shame they can't cater to allergens very well :(
When I ordered, I started with I have a wheat allergy, which I don’t, but I said because I wanted to be more clear about it… that backfired. The lady was still confused by what that meant. I can only imagine the confusion if I said gluten intolerant. Then we had to explain cross-contamination, to which she thought about everything that would be cross contaminated, which is basically everything down to the toppings. I mean she was nice about it but that was startling. I asked for a separate batch but she said it would be too hard to scoop, which is understandable but I’m just gonna say they are places who will do it :,,). I ended up just getting soft serve in a cup, which sucks because the Carvel website says they have gf options. Maybe there are some locations who will accommodate but definitely not this one.
