Server confirmed they have separate fryers for their French fries and are not cooked in the same oil as the onion rings, fish, and breaded chicken. Beef patties are cooked on their own grill top. We requested a GF bun. However, they mentioned buns are cooked on the same grill top. We opted to get the GF bun off the grill due to celiac.
I called and spoke with a manager prior to patronizing this restaurant. I was told the staff was trained in strict allergen control measures and to make the server aware I have celiac so they can notify the manager and ensure proper precautions are taken.I did exactly that, however the next day I woke up with signs of an exposure to gluten. The only food I ate was at Islands. The server was not knowledgeable in their gluten free offerings. I get the idea she did not have appropriate training nor did she convey the message to the manager and staff as I was told would occur. random people brought me my food, and thinking back I have no way to know if I was brought food prepared with precaution or not.My reaction says no. I am extremely disappointed.
The manager came to the table and reviewed my daughter’s order to make sure it was gluten free and assured us that it would be prepared with special precautions. She ordered the nachos — cheese, chips, etc. taken from the back supply, etc. No beans due to possible gluten. Swapped spicy chicken for grilled chicken to be safe. Manager monitored order and delivered food! Couldn’t have asked for a nicer manager and/or experience!
I ordered a salad with grilled chicken (marked GF). When it arrived, the chicken looked different than “safe” grilled chicken usually does. Often, restaurants will dust the chicken or pan with flour to get additional browning & crispiness on grilled chicken. I triple-checked with our server & was told that it was gluten free, including that the celiac note I’d requested. I was wary but had a few bites of the after they repeatedly reassured me. Unfortunately, I definitely was glutened :(
