At the original location, they are fantastic for those with celiac disease. They take precautions the moment I say I have celiac disease, have a dedicated fryer, and I have never been sick.
The Olathe location was the opposite experience. I didn't get sick, but they rolled their eyes and behaved poorly when I asked them to change their gloves.
Thought we would try this place as it was highly recommended in other reviews, but when we visited the Kansas City Live location, the restaurant manager refused to serve someone with a gluten allergy. He said there was way too much risk and tons of cross contamination in the kitchen. No separate prep space and potentially gluten in some seasonings and sauces. We won’t be back, sadly.
Amazing BBQ! Cashier was extremely helpful in helping me decide what to get because their menu wasn’t marked. Luckily we went during a slower time so I didn’t feel like I was holding people up. I ordered the brisket and coleslaw and both were delicious. I was pretty nervous as there is a lot of bread and buns but they must have taken caution because I did not get sick at all. My family loved all their food as well! A must stop if you are looking for amazing BBQ!
Kitchen staff changed their gloves immediately when the cashier told them of my allergy. Most of the menu is GF but there is A LOT of bread floating around where they prepare food, and I got minorly glutened from my meal of ribs, pulled pork, brisket, cole slaw, and potato salad. Everything was undersalted, the sides egregiously so. The BBQ sauce is excellent though.
The best of the best in Kansas City!! Very knowledgeable and the first restaurant we seek out every time we’re in town. Great gluten options and my experiences have always been wonderful!
I was excited to try this place since it had great reviews and my family and I had just flown into Kansas City. I talked to the guy taking orders about what was gluten free and made sure he knew I needed mine gluten free. When my food came it had two slices of Texas toast on it and then as I dug down there was another slice under the meat. This place is hoping even at 3:30 on a Wednesday afternoon. So I stupidly tried to eat the meat hoping it wouldn’t be contaminated but before I even made it to my car I had stomach cramps. Maybe I just hit this place at a bad time but I have no intentions of ever going back.
Did curbside from Joe’s of a half rack rib plate. It was delicious! I called ahead to confirm the ribs were indeed gluten free, and she said most things on their menu are, and listed the sides for me that were not. She shared they do have a dedicated fryer for the fries, and they also offer a gluten free bun for sandwiches. The online system allowed me to request no bread with my rib dinner and note an allergy. Everything was super tasty!
Never had an issue say I need gluten free and get the ribs and sausage dinner with fries and have never had an issue. I have gone to the 119th & Roe location.
I read the positive reviews...I was excited, so we tried it. Yet, here I sit 2 hours later- my stomach all jacked up. The staff seemed knowledgeable and they changed their gloves, assured me the fries were fried separately. I had the brisket and fries. I can’t leave a positive review of whether it’s actually GF or not (I’m leaning towards no), cuz 2 hours later I’m stuck in the bathroom. Edited to update: my gluten allergic daughter is also stuck in the bathroom with stomach issues- I cannot call this safe, especially if both of us are sick because of it.
Amazing food, I had ribs, slaw, and fries and all was good! Their sauces and rubs are gluten free and their fries are in a separate fryer. I thought it might be a little dubious when I got to the counter to grab my takeout order and they asked if I was the one with "a bread allergy", but all was well. I've eaten here pre-diagnosis, so this was my first time getting their food gluten free. But I would never recommend eating in the restaurant, call ahead and get takeout! The wait times are INTENSE! We've waited for 1.5 hours before.
OMG - I am super sensitive to CC. This place was awesome !!!! I did not get sick at all , no pain is a great day ! Would send anyone there with Celiac.
Best BBQ is KC and BONUS the BBQ , sauce, spices and spicy slaw and fries are GF for my husband! This door is ridiculously good!
When went here on a Saturday and got Lucky with the line! Go early! The kitchen staff was very accommodating and suggested multiple gluten free items. They also changed their gloves to do my dish. No menu but just ask and they will help you. I got pulled pork, no sauce or bun. They also sell Cow Town BBQ sauce which is gluten free. We loved it and bought a few bottles to go!
Very happy and confident with Joe’s. My daughter is celiac. They assured me they used a different fryer for fries. Also notified the line it was an allergy and they changed gloves. Love having this as a safe option in KC.
I ordered take out over the phone. The person on the phone was super friendly and told me they would put our fries in a separate GF fryer and the kitchen staff would switch out their gloves. I got the zman with no onion rings and on a GF bun. As always Joe's is amazing and they were so nice too!
