First time visiting, menu identified items that were or could be made gluten free. Many options. We ordered the pork gnocchi using gluten free noodles and loved it. We will go back again.

First time dining. Fabulous food! Menu states what is gluten free and what can be made gluten free. We are cheese curds, brussel sprouts, fish and chips, butternut squash salad, hamburger and fries.

So many gluten free options. The fries are so delicious & worth a trip there just to eat them! Always friendly service, too.

This was a cute spot! We stopped in and they had their Sunday brunch going. Many GF options and tried the fried cheese curds which were great! It's a whole day later and no reactions!

Excellent food all around! It was such a treat to eat out with family while visiting Des Moines—I haven’t had fried cheese balls in years! The menu was clearly marked and the servers were very knowledgeable and reassuring. Separate fryer and good cross contamination kitchen policies. I felt very safe ordering what I wanted and I would absolutely eat here again. My family (not gf) loved the food too!

Wonderful experience! They have they’re own designated fryers just for frying. And TONS of gluten free options. Going out to eat on vacation is always hard, so being able to know I was eating safe took a lot less stress off of me

My favorite GF restaurant here in my home town of Des Moines! Nearly everything on the menu is GF, or can be modified to be GF. Servers are very knowledgeable and the kitchen is very accomodating. Reasonably sized menu makes decisions easy -- I'd call this an "Italian Fusion" place. Fish & chips, fried cheese curds, blackened salmon salad, GF chocolate torte cake, and GF cheese tortellini (!!) are some of our favorites. PLUS the service is always top-notch, the atmosphere is chill and inviting, and the wine selection is phenomenal!

Food is always great. My wife never has any reactions when we go there, which has been a lot! Great food, great staff, no cross contamination, and GF Cheese Curds. What more can you ask for?

This place was, in a word, divine!!! My son and I haven't had gluten free fried fish and chips in... forever??? So delicious, and 90% of the menu is GF, with a dedicated fryer and clear staff awareness. My son will be attending college near here, and I guarantee we'll be back again and again 💜

I absolutely love this place. It is my go restaurant whenever I am in town. Their drinks are absolutely wonderful and almost everything is made in house. The staff is really friendly and helpful.
I am highly allergic to gluten and dairy so being able to ask questions and knowing that the staff know what their talking about makes me relax easier and if they do not then they know to ask the chef. Almost everything is gluten free or able to be made gluten free.
I love seeing what their seasonal drinks are but my go to in the lavender lemonade vodka. The burgers are delicious. The pasta can be made gluten free and has a lovely kick. And the salmon is to die for.

Excellent GF - tasty & amazing dishes... clearly identified on menu and prepared in separate area! Wait staff very helpful, knowledgeable and manager highly trained in Celiac and GF!!! We were a party of 9, I was the only person eating GF due to Celiac and each one of us LOVED our food! Gnocchi, Pulled pork tacos, Brisket, Shrimp, they even separated the charcuterie board for us- bread on side. Wish I lived near there (from Texas - in IA for a wedding) my husband and I eat there at least 2-3 x week! Even LOVED the GF Watermelon Cider! We didn't even get to try the extensive wine menu but it was really impressive. GO THERE, GO THERE, GO THERE!!!

This is the first time I’ve gone out since having to become gluten-free for medical reasons. The staff were very helpful and I loved that everything that was breaded and fried was gluten free. Pretty much any sandwich can be made gluten free for no extra cost as well as nearly every pasta for just $2. My server also made sure to double check that the kitchen had given me the correct bun before giving me my food. Food was delicious and I will definitely be returning to try more of their menu.

Sadly after 4 years of loving GF squeaky cheese and Champaign battered fish I have to turn my back forever. 2 trips in March & April 2022 both ended up in severe contamination. Management claims no changes to cooking. So sad.

This in my opinion is the best, safest restaurant in Des Moines. I also like when I have the option of getting an appetizer, meal, and dessert because having celiac your lucky to just get a gluten free meal. I love the calamari, fish and chips, tacos, poutine, and the flourless chocolate tart.

Visiting Des Moines and saw positive reviews for Louie's. With the pandemic, I am still not comfortable eating in restaurants and wanted to have food delivered to the hotel. I called the restaurant to confirm that the fish and chips were fried in a dedicated fryer and was met with a resounding YES! The person I spoke to was very confident about it and I asked if it was safe for Celiacs and he said several people who work there have Celiac. Somehow that made me feel even better that they knew what they were doing. Ordered through a delivery service and the food arrived hot and crisp. It was 3 huge pieces of fish, and very delicious. Good fries too, and the dipping sauce was yummy. No gluten reaction here, just delish fried food!

OMG!!!! Can you please come to Minneapolis???? One of the best calamari dishes I’ve ever had. The funky chicken sandwich was excellent and made gluten free so my celiac wife could taste it. Her fish and chips were amazing!! And the fries? Perfect. We will return!
Yes
Absolutely love Louie’s Wine Dive!! Dinner is the largest selection for gluten free options - calamari, cheese curds, beer, pasta, etc. Brunch was unfortunately a small gluten free menu and the portion size was the same. I’d just recommend dinner.

We love this place. My Celiac husband has eaten there many times so we felt safe and took our very sensitive daughter. She also enjoyed a meal without getting sick. It’s our go-to place when we are in DSM.

LOVE the cheese curds!!! I wanted ravioli, but they don’t make gf ravioli so they gave me the insides with penne noodles.. so good!

Best gluten free place in all of the Des Moines area!!!
I am celiac and ate here and the food was the best I've had during my time in Iowa. I didn't worry about getting "glutened" and was totally fine after eating with no reaction or even a rash so they were amazing handling celiac.
I had rabbit with red beet risotto and my boyfriend and I couldn't get enough of the pecan brussels sprouts. Coming from Boston, I hadn't come across any restaurant in Iowa that could compare to some of the food from back home but Louie's Wine Dive topped the list for any restaurant I've ever eaten at. I would highly recommend and will definitely come again!
Yes
I liked it enough. I got the chips and guacamole which was great and beautifully plated. For main course I tried the fish and chips. I got 3 strips of fish with a tiny bed of fries in a small bowl. After all that and 2 glasses of wine I was still hungry. For $44 I want to be full. Seemed celiac friendly and the decor was hip.

This is our FAVORITE GF restaurant! All the dishes we have tried have been fantastic with the added bonus of a wide ranging wine selection. Street tacos, fish & chips, and Sinatra burger are all good choices...but you will not be disappointed with other menu items. Staff is wonderful!

I stopped at 2pm on. Friday 11/10/2017. Their door was locked. The sign says they're open from 11am until 11pm. I assume they have closed?
All options easily marked on menu. Staff were super helpful and knowledgeable. Cute spot, love music, amazing fish and chips.

This is our go-to spot in the neighborhood! Safe for me & my son (celiac) and my daughter (NCGS)

I love the fish and chips!! Great service, delicious food and comfy atmosphere. I've never had a problem there and I am very sensitive to gluten.
Yes
Excellent GF fish & chips. Been a long time since I have found a place that served GF fish & chips. Very accommodating. Server asked if GF was a preference or an allergy.
My husband took our oldest daughter, who is a very sensitive celiac, for a Valentines date tonight. She was vomiting two hours later (her usual gluten response) and has now been vomiting for close to two hours. VERY disappointed and disheartening. We were so excited to potentially have another safe place to eat but we will never take our girls there again.

want to come back to try more as I only had a few appetizers - but tons of GF options, dedicated fryer, and fun atmosphere. I’m a super super sensitive celiac and had no issues; I tried the brussel sprouts (some bites really good, some bites just okay) and the fried curds - delicious!!

I am a very sensitive Celiac and I had no problems at Louie's. Our waitress was a Celiac herself, so she assured me that it was safe for me to eat there. She said that when she put gluten free on our order she had to specify it was for an allergy and not a preference. I would recommend reminding your waiter/waitress to do that, if you have an allergy. Their menu is clearly marked and you need to ask if their fryer is separate or shared, apparently it isn't all the time. I had the spinach artichoke dip, butternut squash salad and chicken piccata with no issues. I would say this restaurant is very safe for Celiacs.

👎👎👎👎👎
We went out tonight for dinner. We ordered several gluten free entrees. Everything looked delicious. They messed up the order and brought out GLUTEN pasta for my celiac daughter.
She ate some, then we questioned it because it came out with bread that looked too good to be gluten free. The waitress tried to cover it and said she thought that the pasta was GF but the bread (which was on top of the pasta) wasn’t. I pressed the issue and spoke with the executive chef and discovered she entered the meal as regular, not gluten free, and in fact the entire meal was full of gluten.
Now we get to deal with the consequences 😞. I plan to call tomorrow and address this issue with a manager to make sure they have better precautions in place so this doesn’t happen to anyone else.
