Chef Chris is gone. ☹ All the time GF food that made the place so perfect are gone too. Hate to see it changing like this. Gonna miss the place. When i was talking to the bartender to place my order he said he was glad to see the back of all the gf foods and foodies. Alas.

EDIT: Chef Chris and the amazing GF fried foods are gone, as is most of the creativity on the menu. You are better off at the Five Guys.
Old review for posterity:
This is is a hidden gem with a tremendous number of gluten-free options.
All of the fried food is gluten-free
The burgers and sandwiches are available with gluten-free buns
The food is really well executed - fresh, well put together, healthy portions, and homemade (eg dressings and sauces are clearly made in-house)
Even the General Tso's Chicken is gluten-free (cornstarch breading, tamari, just pass on the fortune cookie)

We have a dedicated fryer. No hidden gluten. Our only glutenous products are bread, pasta and tortillas. We offer gluten free bread as a substitute. Sorry, no pasta sub.
The most amazing chicken sandwich! You will not be disappointed.

Had the chicken sandwich with fries and wings. It was so amazing that I got another sandwich to go for later. They unfortunately do not have boneless wings, but the bone in were tasty. Menu wasn’t marked with gluten free items, but most items seem to be able to be made that way. So glad we stopped here while we were in town.
As I was picking up my order another celiac gentleman came in saying this is one of his most trusted local places, which made me feel even better.

THE BEST gluten free fried chicken sandwich & fries. No trip to Asheville is complete w/o a stop here. (Even the lemon vinaigrette dressing on the salad is delicious.)

WOWWW - this place is a gem!! I had animal style fries as an appetizer (dedicated fryer), black&mild fried chicken sandwich (the chicken, sauces & the bun are incredible) & THEY HAVE BONELESS WINGS - I tried the lemonade sauce boneless wings & omg!! I got a take out order, but service was fantastic/employees were all friendly. I would eat here all the time if I lived nearby.

Great small bar. Loved our food. Answered our questions. My fried chicken sandwich and fries were some of the best eaten. Would eat there again if in area.

The staff was knowledgeable about celiac/gluten. Everything on the menu was gf except mac & cheese and wontons. The breaded chicken was outstanding on the gf bun with lemonade mayo. The cheeseburger was delicious and you will love the burger sauce. My husband had absolutely no issues and will definitely go back next time we’re in town.

The place may look a little shabby...and like a bar...but a fantastic place to get GF burgers and fries! This is is the first time in two years I've been able to have GF deep fried chicken and French fries from and dedicated fryer. Also really impressed that the Chef left a personal review on this App. Definitely worth the visit.

The food was excellent. Almost everything can be prepared gluten free on the menu. Eating in a restaurant has been challenging for my daughter who has recently been diagnosed with celiac. This was a great experience!

The chef came and talked to us personally about the kitchen practices and what was safe and wasn’t. The menu is almost completely safe minus the pasta items and wontons. All gluten items are made elsewhere. A hidden gem in a dive bar. Will be back on future visits to the area!

We have three Celiacs in a family of five. Chef Chris came out and talked with us. He is Gluten sensitive himself. We shared experiences and different GF products on the market. THE FRIED CHICKEN WAS AMAZING!!!! Sooo crispy. Better than regular breading.

We were on a road trip and needed to grab a quick dinner in Asheville. I was a little nervous at first because it’s definitely a bar setting, but the chef came out of the kitchen and reassured us that they could make most items gluten free and that they have a dedicated fryer. I got the lemon pepper wings - they were delicious and I did not get sick. My partner got a burger with fries that was not gluten free (though they do have gluten free buns available), and he said it was also really good. Would definitely recommend.

Hi! I’m Chef Chris, owner/operator at The Malvern. This is in regards to our culinary process. We have no loose flour in our kitchen. Any glutinous products are prepared by third parties. These include sandwich buns, tortillas, pasta and wonton chips. We offer gluten free buns as a sub for our sandwiches. All of our fried products are gluten free. We use cornstarch as opposed to flour for our fried chicken. Our deep fryer is dedicated, and our kitchen staff well trained in regards to cross contamination (I.e. mutual contact surfaces).
The reality of our menu is that it is nearly 100% gluten free, with the exception of our Wonton Nachos and Macaroni Dishes. We would even leave the fortune cookie off of your Chinese food, which is tamari, not soy based.
As a small business under intense restrictions and regulatory guidelines, with a buzzing to go line and a bar at maximum capacity, we tend to overlook the sensitivity of our gluten free friends requests. I apologize to anyone whose questions go without proper explanation. Please, feel free to ask me, Chef Chris, if you have any questions. I’m more prepared to answer any food related curiosities than our bartenders are.
Much love from the gluten sensitive Chef.

I don’t know how other people found anything gluten free here. I asked the person at the counter what the fried chicken was cooked in and he said “the fryer “. Duh.he could not tell me anything that was gluten free. He also told me that they only had one fryer not a dedicated gluten free one. This place is basically a bar with standard bar food. Would not recommend if you need gluten free.

Sorry we weren’t able to communicate our gluten free menu to you. We actually don’t use flour in our kitchen or fryer. Our only glutinous products are buns, pasta, tortillas and wontons. Any of our sandwich options can be had GF, aside from the falafel wrap, however we have a falafel app that can be had in its place. Unfortunately we don’t have gf sub for our pasta, least it would be GF. Our wonton nachos are also glutinous, however it’s a pre-prepared product. Please feel free to order what you wish, just ask for it to be prepared gluten free. Our chef and sous chef are very well versed in cross contamination and food safety, as described by our other GF friends here in the FMGF app. We also have a gluten free draught line, cider and seltzer options, as well as wine and champagne.
Our goal is to be sensitive to those with celiacs disease, however we are not a gluten free restaurant. I will work towards a better line of communication between our front of house staff and customers, as well as continuing education on the subject matter. Thank you!

We had the fried chicken sandwich and burger. Excellent. Chris came out to talk to us about the precautions he takes to prevent cross contamination in the kitchen. No loose flour is used and anything containing gluten is prepared at other facilities. Great experience and we will be back!

They can make almost anything gluten free and have a dedicated gluten free fryer. They have a fried chicken sandwich and it is real fried chicken (not something frozen they tossed in a fryer). They make all their fried chicken gluten free because the owner said they found that it made their chicken crispier. I got their fried chicken sandwich and fries and it was amazing! They both were gluten free. The server was extremely knowledgeable and said they take extreme precautions to make sure that the ingredients they use are not cross-contaminated. This truly is a hidden gem. I waited until the next day to write this(as I do all of my reviews) to make sure I didn’t get sick. I feel great today and would not hesitate to go back. I have celiac and I am very sensitive even with cross-contamination in how easy I get sick. I research and ask a lot of questions about how the food is prepared and whether the toppings they use are from the same container they grab them for the food that has gluten before deciding to eat. Would recommend this place.

This place is such a hidden gem! Almost everything on the menu can be made gluten-free except the pasta and the wonton nachos. They even have fried chicken and a Chinese takeout entree! No reaction and I'm sensitive. Will definitely become a regular!

Dank food and never felt the vengeance of gluten’s kiss here.

Menu is to die for, reasonable prices, good hang out, friendly staff and knowledgeable staff. All breading is gluten free, gf pasta and bread is only gluten in house and is prepared in separate dishes and chef is knowledgeable of cross-contamination. Please eat here because I can’t stop!!!

I have celiac and this has been a favorite spot of mine. They recently updated their menu and the chef has designed the kitchen and menu so that the only gluten in the kitchen is bread and pasta, which can both be safely substituted without risk of cross contamination. They also have a gluten free fryer! My favorites so far are their thai green curry and the fried chicken sandwich. Indulge.
