We eat at Martin’s quite a bit. They are very helpful to me with my GF questions and off gluten free menu. I do have celiac and I have found it safe. Wish they had a dedicated fryer for their fries but there are plenty of other GF sides to choose from!
Martin’s has a separate allergen menu if you ask (I suggest going to the takeout menu while your party waits in line so you can scope it out before you get to the counter), that clearly labels out what is GF. The staff was knowledgeable abt GF as I was told that 2 of their sauces were GF when ordering. Will be back!
I grew up eating Jack's Creek BBQ... in Jack's Creek. I love that Martin's is here and doing the thing.
They have a dedicated weblink to help you navigate Gluten Free options, but... and it's a big but, when you order online, you HAVE to select "Buns" as an option - even when you have marked the entire order Gluten Free for Allergy reasons. This crushes any thought that they can prepare a Celiac safe meal.
I had asked them about this when ordering months ago, and they had not changed the web form. This last weekend, we ordered takeout for the family 2 times in 3 days. The first time, there were no celiac folks eating, but we ordered GF anyway to keep the house "clean".
The 2nd time, I ordered, marked the order Gluten Free, and.. as I always do, called the restaurant to confirm that the order is GF for an allergy, alerted them to the "Buns" flaw in the online order process, and asked them if they would be able to ensure that Buns did not get put in the order. I was assured, as always that they would make a note and it would be taken care-of.
I sent a relative in to pick up the order and... there were buns in the bag. We fixed other food for family members that are celiac, and accepted the order. I called the restaurant to alert them to the mishap and ask them to please change the online order form.
The restaurant manager was nice, and I was specific in communicating that I didn't want anything from the restaurant (comp, meal remade, etc.) I simply asked that they convey to management the need to change the web-order form in order to keep folks safe.
As of this writing, the menu order has not changed. If you order a family supper, despite marking it Gluten Free, the web-order will tell the staff to put gluten buns in your order! ??
I did not get a sense from the manager that she understood the gravity of the allergy exposure and the risk they take in allowing someone to select GF for an allergy, but mandate an allergen be included with the order. She was polite, as was I, but nothing has been done now.
That's what you see. The buns were in the bag. I cannot recommend this restaurant for Celiac at all... if they miss the obvious, you have no idea what is going on in the back.
Martin's, you have GREAT food!! Please simply fix the web order and keep your patrons safe!
If I hear back from them or see that the web-form is fixed, I'll update the rating and comments.
Staff were all very knowledgeable about Celiac, food was really good. They do not have a dedicated fryer though for their fries and the smoked wings are smoked then fried but most all the other meats, sauces and sides are gluten-free! The bartender even made sure the flavored vodka was gluten-free for me.
I ate at the location downtown on 4th last week with zero issues! They have an allergen menu that marks what allergens are in every item on the regular menu. It’s best to compare it side by side with the full menu (the allergen menu has no descriptions on it). I ordered the bbq baked potato with pork on it BUT noticed that the regular menu had Sweet Dixie sauce on it. I could see on the allergen menu that Sweet Dixie has gluten in it but that wasn’t noted on the bbq baked potato line. I was able to easily sub it for one of the gf sauces but all that to say...check the descriptions on the regular menu carefully for all items included in your order and compare each one to the allergen menu! Also, the cashier told me potatoes have gluten in them and I had to correct her...she mistook gluten for dairy and we clarified that the bbq baked potato had dairy in it (cheese), not gluten. I didn’t get sick at all though and I’m a super sensitive celiac who hardly ever eats out because I get sick all the time!
I love Martins! I probably average going there once a week and have for over a year. I never get sick, but I am very careful, I only eat the brisket. I notify them of the allergy and request they change their gloves.
I’m super sensitive so I don’t trust sauces, nachos, sides, etc.
I ordered from Martin's via Door Dash while on a trip. I specified GF, no bun on my order, but my order arrived on a bun. I am not super sensitive so I can take the food off the bun & still eat it, and the pulled pork & cole slaw were excellent so I'm glad for that, but if you are very sensitive you may do better calling to order rather than doing so online.
Went here with high hopes after their allergen info on their website said they were rated highly for celiacs. Left very frustrated and disappointed. I told them I was GF when ordering and to please leave the bread off, the food came out with a side of BBQ sauce on the side that was not gluten free. Only tasted it before asking to make sure but it still made me sick. Ended up eating bbq nachos with no sauce because the sauce contains gluten. The food was subpar, anyway. Their website also says their fries are fried in a designated frier but the cashier informed me they weren’t. I felt like a burden to the staff and do not feel comfortable returning.
Would give 0 stars if it let me. I was told the fries were made in a separate fryer, then after we finished our meal a manager came over to our table and told us that the separate fryers are only in the downstairs kitchen, not the upstairs kitchen which wasn’t communicated to the servers (and we were seated upstairs). The manager was very rude and didn’t understand celiacs. I had already finished the meal and will get sick as a result of this. I did get my meal for free, but that does not make up for what happened. This is not safe for people with celiacs considering the manager had no understanding of the disease.
Thank you to Troy for stepping in when our less than hospitable cashier rolled his eyes at us when we told him we are GF. Your expertise on Gluten Free was amazing & so helpful. We order the Big Momma with 4 sides - french fries (dedicated fryer) potato salad, cole slaw and green beans. Absolutely delish!! Well worth the wait.
The staff was knowledgeable in our gluten free options. They have a dedicated gluten free fryer. Although, originally our sandwich came with bread, they had no problem making a fresh one. We had chicken wings, brisket, ribs, and pulled pork. We had the following gluten free sides: potato salad, broccoli salad, and string beans. Fyi, the wings were delicious!! No one in my group got sick. Enjoy!!
Really good food! The basic Jack Creek bbq sauce is safe to have on any of the meat. Just note you HAVE TO ASK for no bread even if it’s just a tray you order because they brought mine on bread and I felt horrible sending it back because I didn’t mention it! But lots of good GF options!
You order at a counter, so they have the list of things that are safe or not. Most things are. A food runner guided the cashier through what I could have—I think she was new. The only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 was because our food came out SO quickly (as in, 5 minutes after we ordered), so imagine they have it all ready to roll. I’m just so used to my food taking much longer than average so that threw me off. But, I AM hypersensitive and I felt fine afterwards, and the place is really cool. Definitely check it out!
Super good! Almost everything is GF, but they do have a list at the counter of things that are NOT GF. You can have all of the meats and 3/5 sauces. I got the smoked wings with Memphis dry rub with a side of Alabama white sauce, and the deviled eggs. Everything was delicious. I did find a stray fry at the bottom of my basket of wings which made me nervous, but I didn’t get sick. Would eat here again!
Really good meat but very limited on sauces. None of their BBQ sauces are gluten free, only their white sauce. However it had dairy in it and I have a dairy sensitivity. But the meat was great on its own!
Ask for the gluten free menu! I always get the smoked wings dry rubbed with a side of the Alabama white sauce.
Helpful staff but limited options bc of sauces But if you're looking for decent BBQ meats it's good!
They have a list of items that are non gluten friendly and were aware of the condition (my son has celiac). Made accommodations readily. Probably solid, though education of staff was variable (one person mentioned not to put bread on the gluten free plate, another corrected her and added that they should be told it's celiac). not a gluten free menu (just a list next to register of items that have gluten).
The meals were good, not great. Not a bad place to drop into for a quick bite to eat. They know how to cook meat, my chicken was very juicy which most places do not know how to do.
Someone mentioned they have gluten free cornbread, but we asked and they told us they do NOT, so I don't know if the other person ended up getting sick or not but heads up.
