I'm a celiac and tried this restaurant visiting Austin. The sous chef Rob came out to let me know they had an potential contamination issue and they were changing the fryer's oil. He then sent out a complimentary plate of amazing made in-house gluten free crackers, fruit and cheese. Service and food are fantastic.
Great fried chicken and gf chicken noodle soup! Love the cider as well!
Owner is celiac and they take gluten free seriously. The manager Ryan was very friendly and helpful. I also have allergies to alliums (onion and garlic) and he talked to the chef and came back with 3 recommendations. They could do a burger or their grilled chicken. I got the latter with mashed potatoes and it was wonderful. 3 hours later not throwing up, so I know it was safe. Mellow restaurant bar near the convention center. Good selection of wine and beer on tap. Not too crowded or too loud. I would go back again for sure.
For the first time I enjoyed the pleasure of having gluten free fried chicken with mash potatoes and greens. The chicken was simply delicious. Very nice atmosphere and the music was great. Look forward to going back. The gentleman that took our order, very knowledgeable about what is happening downtown Austin. We had an extra great time because of his information.
Gluten free fried chicken, mashed potatoes and side salad were great. Loved gluten free brownie ice cream sandwich for dessert which was big enough for two. Good service. Did not get sick. Wine was pricey which drops rating to 4.
GF chicken and waffles were nothing short of amazing!! Also thoroughly enjoyed the champagne salad with crispy, perfectly seasoned GF tenders!
One of my favorite restaurant experiences! Great wine list. Great music! Great service! And the fried chicken was AMAZING! The chef came out after I was eating to check and asked me if I was celiac. I am not but my daughter is. However I eat 100% GF as well.
Best fried chicken I’ve had since being diagnosed 6 years ago!!!
There aren’t many gf options but the gf fried chicken was amazing! The staff was knowledgeable and nice. It is pricey but I 10/10 recommend if you want some good chicken.
Very limited options but delicious fried chicken.
Wow! Fucking awesome. Period.
Best fried chicken I have ever had and it’s gluten free!! Dedicated fryer and knowledgeable staff
Best fried chicken I have ever had!
Loved the fried chicken with mashed potatoes, delicious flavors & no after effect. The service & atmosphere were great too! As a celiac, im thrilled to have found this place.
Great food and people. I have celiac and had no problem. Next time in I will have the fried chicken.
Ordered the fried chicken that was recommended by another reviewer and it was excellent. Nice casual atmosphere and excellent GF options.
wonderful! they had clearly marked gluten free menu items and their gluten free brownie ice cream sandwich was amazing!!!
Fried Chicken was fabulous!! And the brussel sprouts were delicious! No issues! I will be back here next time we are in town!
Celiac friendly, and their fried chicken really is great. There are other options as well, although we did not order them our waiter knew exactly what was safe for me and what was not.
Everything from the wine to the food to the waitstaff was amazing! Get the shrimp and grits with a side if a the gf fried chicken. You wont regret it!
I eat here almost every time I'm in Austin in. The fried chicken is amazing and SAFE!!
Fabulous fried chicken. Dedicated fryer. Service excellent. Wine outstanding. I wish I had one near me. Highly recommend.
The gf fried chicken was better than real fried chicken, it was delicious! Highly recommend this restaurant to anyone with celiac and/or food allergies. Very knowledgeable staff and highly attentive to ensure everything was perfect.
Extremely kind and knowledgeable staff. Spoke to the chef directly. Designated fryers, amazing fried chicken, and the chef even made a gluten free brownie for us! Couldn't be happier.
Amazing gluten free fried chicken! I have celiac and did not get sick and my non-gf friend even ordered the gf fried chicken. Staff was knowledgeable and clearly labeled menu.
Celiac friendly fried chicken that is among the best you'll ever have. Special plating system to prevent cross contamination. Heaven for celiacs. Owner has Celiac disease and is very sensitive. Two best words: dedicated fryer.
amazing fried chicken. seems like everything is done with dairy. I'm not celiac but this place is phenomenal.
Two to three options. Dedicated fryer.
Amazing fried chicken!! Dedicated fryer. A must try for Celiacs!!
Wait staff was unbelievable, and so was the food! Such a great place
Chicken was amazing. ....
The chicken was amazing.
Oh. . . my...word! Fried chicken, mashed potatoes and collard greens. .no words to describe! Fantastic! Wait staff extremely knowledgeable about gluten!
Eat here! The fried chicken and waffles are gluten free and the best I've had anywhere ever. The frito pie omelet was also incredible.
The gf fried chicken was fantastic!
Chicken and waffles, wow! First time in 14 year. So good I went back two more times before flying back home. Cannot recommend enough!
had the scallops and husband had the fried chicken. it was really! they use chili oil and things were a bit spicy but very tasty. will definitely go back when we are in town. they have valet parking too which is helpful.
I've only found gf fried chicken one other time in 4 years and this was far superior! Crispy, crunchy, tender inside and not greasy. Also had bone marrow popcorn. Very good! Lots of choices. It is a seasonal menu. Came with a large group, many who ordered regular fried chicken. Mine was on a black plate. Everyone raved.
Quite a few things: 1) Website does not accurately reflect the amount of options. You will have stuff to eat here! 2) Unless you're a vegetarian. I recently started eating meat and thank goodness. Would only have 1 option, you guessed it, a salad. 3) The service I had was TERRIBLE! Our waiter basically ignored my mother and I. Took forever to order, constantly sipping empty water glasses, he wasn't friendly. Very off out from that. 4) I was excited for the GF chicken and GF zucchini bread, but the chicken was SPICY. It's not talked about on this app. Also zucchini bread wasn't on menu- maybe it's seasonal? This app greatly talked up Max's. Service brought my ranking down. It seems overrated from previous reviews. That said, it is a safe place to eat.
This place is AWESOME!! Gluten free fried chicken. Wow. Loved it.
Fantastic food and atmosphere. Staff totally get it. Dedicated fryer for their fried chicken. Yum!
Great fried chicken. No celiac issues at all.
Fried Chicken is AWESOME!
The food is really good!
GF chicken was divine. My husband couldn't tell the difference. The sweet potato pie was amazing!
Gluten free chicken and waffles. This place was amazing!
This restaurant has plenty of gf food options. My daughter and I both thought the food was delicious. The fried chicken had a wonderful crunch and it had juicy delicious meat. I am extremely sensitive and I am not reacting to the food. There are large portions for the price of the food. This restaurant is definitely worth going out of your way to get here.
Owner has Celiacs. FOH and BOH staff are well trained on allergy issues. Gluten free dishes are served on black plates, those containing gluten on white. I had the fried chicken plate. Devoured it completely. It was surprisingly clean and lean. There is thought behind the preparation. The food isn't polluted with butter, fat, sugar, cream or salt. Zucchini bread dessert was fantastic as well.
I've only been there once so maybe it was an off night. Fried chicken was just OK. The mashed potatoes that came with it seemed waterlogged. I like mashed potatoes with a lot more butter and cream. These tasted like they were made with a thinner milk - just not enough fat. The chipotle honey that came with was a great addition. I love honey on fried chicken. I would come back if other folks in a party wanted to go here. There are lots of options for me to eat. But I probably won't come back on my own.
Huge list of GF options and the food is ridiculously good. GF fried chicken? So good! I'm in love.
The entire waitstaff was very friendly and our waitress made sure my meal was gluten free in all aspects. Their menu is over half marked (GF) “gluten friendly” and a couple items are (AGF) “ask for gluten friendly.” The thought to have great tasting fried chicken that is gluten friendly was an amazing treat as well. Even the fried deviled eggs were made with potato flour, so an extra added treat to have an appetizer as well. Definitely would recommend this place to anyone.
I have Celiac and have to be very careful what and where I eat. I have severe reactions to even small amounts of gluten. I was excited but afraid to eat here. they told me the owner has Celiac. So it made me feel a little bit better. There menu has options that can be prepared gluten free. I had the FRIED CHICKEN ; mashed potatos and collard greens. Huge servings. breast thigh and leg. It was Awesome!! And I didn't get sick.Yeah!! they also have a dedicated fryer... woo hoooo!! And the wine was great too... I will be back!!!
We stopped here based on good reviews but the entire experience was terrible, start to finish. They said the fried chicken would take 30 minutes but it took an hour. We ordered Caesar salad while we waited and it never arrived. Then there was some sort of contamination after waiting an hour for our food and we saw the chef yelling at our server that the menu says ‘gluten-friendly’, not ‘gluten-free’... We were told the fries were not gluten free on the tender basket and that we would get a salad instead, but guess what was brought out, with the tenders sitting right on top...fries! Absolutely terrible experience. After waiting an hour! We were in at 2pm and there were very few tables, almost no one else in the entire restaurant- stay away if you’re celiac. We should have known when we saw ‘gluten friendly’ instead of ‘gluten free’ on the menu but took a risk based on positive reviews. Wrong choice.
I got severely glutened from this place. I had the crab cake and gf fried chicken. They reassured me that it was a separate fryer and all celiac friendly but they mentioned they had a new chef that had started and he must not be aware of the sensitivities of celiac as I got very sick immediately after eating here. Beware.
Awesome gf fried chicken! My highly sensitive daughter has eaten here twice with no symptoms. I would have given the entire meal four stars but we had a few waiters due to one going off duty so I was given my husband's beer rather than my gf cider I ordered. We switched upon figuring out and luckily I didn't suffer any symptoms.
Their GF jalapeño buttermilk fried chicken was amazing! We also had a great salad with huge jumbo shrimp. Great bubbles list too. They were very careful with our GF order and told us the round plates indicate GF while the square are not gf. Several people came to check on our order and reassure us throughout the eve.
Love this place! They remember my gluten allergy when I make a reservation and even ask "are there anymore allergies we should be aware of?" The fried chicken and collard greens are off the hook. Great brunch menu also. I always feel safe eating here.
We haven't had any problems and the food is delicious (entrees in particular; some of the sides are kind of bland). The fried chicken is a specialty and is certainly among the best I've ever had, gluten-free or not. Be sure to specify gluten-free fried chicken, since they prepare it both ways.
We were so excited to try the fried chicken after reading the reviews. When ordering I informed the waitress that my kids had celiac disease. The sous chef then came out to talk to us and told us he did not feel it was safe for us to eat at the restaurant. He said he can't confirm that the dedicated fryers were actually being used correctly. I appreciated the honesty but do not recommend for celiacs.
Fried chicken and greens! OMG the best chicken, even counting before I found out I had celiacs! Staff was kind and low key about my request for extra caution without drawing undue attention to me like some restaurants have to act like it's a big production to bring out gluten free food to a customer and I just want a dining experience like every other customer!
First time we ate here it was GREAT. Chicken was juicy and tasty and best of all gluten free. But these last two times I have gotten sick. I'm celiac and I did tell the waiter. I do not get sick right away and when I do I'm just trying to get home rather than call them back. Not sure if the chef is the same? I was so happy to finally find fried chicken but now I don't think we are going back. Not worth the consequences.
Love love love this place. The owner of the company is actually Celiac so it's a big deal for them. The gluten free fried chicken is fried in a dedicated fryer (although it takes about 25 minutes to cook, more if it's busy) and is one of the most delicious things I have ever eaten. The staff there is also super friendly, and I will definitely be going back there.
Terrific experience. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about celiac disease and took great care of me. The plate my boyfriend ordered was not originally gluten free but they happily modified it so I could share with him. The GF fried chicken was to die for! As were the pb&j wings! I highly recommend it!
food was great but I got glutened. I'm sure it was either the appetizer or the ketchup, which was unmarked, so I don't know the brand. I know the chicken is fried separately. I was really excited since the owner has Celiac, but slip ups in the kitchen happen. I won't be back though. Can't risk the intestinal damage and horrible symptoms.
It was Restaurant Week so they had a limites menu, but still plenty of options including gluten-free fries chicken. I haven't had fried chicken since being diagnosed celiac and this didn't disappoint! Great atmosphere and staff. I would definitely visit again! Probably a good idea to make reservations - we got lucky without them.
On line menu is not updated. Was looking forward to gf shrimp/grits because it was on the web menu, then after arriving found out it was not gf. Chef was knowledgable and I ate there w/o getting sick, but they need to keep up w their menu on line. Had the tasting menu w the wine pairings, it was just ok. Wine portions very small.
The chicken was as good as other reviewers said t would be. The curried okra was also a excellent and the fries as well. They do have a separate dedicated fryer so no issues at all. The chef even came by to tell us all the items that could be modified to fit our needs.
OMG! It took my cousin from Chicago to come down to Houston to tell me she'd found this place online. I can't remember the last time I had fried chicken and I LOVE the stuff!! I've eaten it twice since March (it's July). I also have to be low-carb/ketogenic due to other metabolic issues and even though I ate 3 pieces, it did not kick me out of ketosis the next day! The first time, the waitress said that the people who have tried both the gf and regular actually say they like the gf version better!!!! It is to die for!!!!! So the plate is about 18 bucks. You get 3 large pcs of FRIED chicken, a leg, a breast and a thigh. It's a LOT of food. You get mashed potatoes, which are ALSO wonderful (but I had to sub due to my other dietary needs), it also comes with some collard greens that are not bad. I'm not the biggest fan of collard greens but mostly because I just have not eaten them a whole lot in my lifetime. It cost me $6 to sub green beans. It was a whole lot of them but I thought it was quite a steep sub. You could sub fries and one or two other things that I couldn't eat for free. As far as I know, there's no other way to get the chicken a la carte. You can add a piece to the plate for like 6 bucks and split it with someone. It is a LOT of food, we are big eaters and we always take food home from here. Like another reviewer said, they have a dedicated fryer for their gluten free chicken. They also have some gluten friendly beer. At least they did when I was there last week. The staff has always been out of this world friendly and super helpful. Definitely on our top 2 gf meals to eat at Htown restaurants. This is for the Washington locations, have not been to others YET ;) (mouth actually watering as I type)
Excellent gluten free fried chicken that is served on a special plate with mashed potatoes and collard greens. With the restaurant name they obviously have a lot of wine. They don't have many other drink options though - Coke, Diet Coke, tea - sweet and unsweet. They had a handful of beers but only one marked GF.
Gluten free fried chicken on regular menu- made in a dedicated fryer with kitchen staff who knows how to actually do GF. It is soooo goood! The other half of their menu is seasonal and changes, and usually about half of it is naturally GF or with few modifications. You can see into the kitchen a little and hear them alerting each other to a GF order, so they take it seriously. A little pricey, but if you don't drink it isn't too bad. I think this is the only place you can get GF fried chicken, and it is glorious. The proprietor of the restaurant has Celiac disease, so GF is something they do right. Free valet parking.
