April 21, 2024. Very unpleasant experience today at this restaurant. Many people have suggested to me that this place has safe gluten free pizza. Upon entering, I told our host that I had a severe gluten allergy. They told me that they weren't busy and that I should talk to the cooks. One cook assured me that eventhough they put dough on a common surface in a common oven there was no risk of cross contamination due to the heat of the oven. Dough is prepared in a separate area (immediately behind the common area, literally just behind the gluten area) and sauce and toppings are all shared between gluten and non gluten pizza. Although these are usually red flags, I listened to the chef who told me that in his 8 years, no one has come back to complain about getting glutened. I believed him and ordered. After eating, I was showing all of my tell-tale gluten cross contamination symptoms before I left. The cook was right. His 8 year streak of no gluten cross-contamination will remain intact. I will not go back to complain. Excuse my negatively, but this was a BAD experience for me.

I ordered a pizza from here. I was assured it was safe and that they have been doing gluten free for 12 years. While it tasted great, I have been severely I’ll for the last several hours. If you have Celiac, I would avoid!!!

Amazing GF dough! Our waitress was very familiar with celiac and assured me that the gluten free pizzas are prepared in a separate area of the kitchen (shared oven). I got the Pizza Del Re and didn’t have any issues! It was delicious.

They have the tastiest gluten free pizza I have found in Pittsburgh. They have Neapolitan style pizza, where each person orders their own pie. Their GF crust is the real deal, what I consider “real crust” pizza… Excellent texture, not like most places that claim to have GF crust but it’s more like a giant soggy cracker or a flatbread someone is pretending is pizza!

They have a separate counter for preparation and separate utensils, BUT they put them in the same oven and use the same pans to pull them out of the oven. I watched their process and there is TONS of contamination happening.

Great service very knowledgeable staff. By far the best gluten free pizza tied with la Leggenda in South Beach... I ever had. Dough was delicious and texture was amazing, don't know how they do it. Great Gelato too.

My family and I went to Mercurio's for a late lunch. There was a 15-minute wait, and we explored the shops nearby while waiting. We all opted for pizza, and for an extra $4 I had the GF crust. It was light, airy, and chewy; perfect for pizza. The sauce and toppings were excellent. I had the Capricciosa with artichokes, mushrooms, olives, cooked Italian ham, house-made mozzarella, and extra virgin olive oil. We also enjoyed gelato for dessert. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable.

YOU MUST GO HERE! Pizza is amazing. It's the type of pizza that has a puffy, airy crust that you think seems too good to be true. My two kids both have celiac and also have other allergies, including egg, which makes getting good GF pizza tough (Mercurios GF pizza is also egg free). They have a dedicated kitchen space to make the GF pizzas and a dedicated place in their oven. They do bake GF and regular pizzas in the same oven (but use separate cutters and paddles) but our server said that no one has ever had a problem with it. It was really delicious....so good that we will be going for a second time during our 3 night stay in Pittsburgh!

The gluten free pizza was excellent! I told the waiter that I have celiac and he was very knowledgeable and ensured that it was prepared correctly. And my non-gf date said he wouldn’t have known it was gluten free unless someone told him :)

If you haven’t had authentic dough in awhile this is the spot to go! We got the pizza with prosciutto and truffle oil as well as the caprese salad which was all assured to be gluten free. We came back later to have gelato (lemon pistachio was so good!) where the server was knowledgeable in using a fresh scoop! Highly recommend and had no reaction afterwards!

They did not disappoint! My son who has celiac gleefully ordered the four cheese with GF crust. The crust looked phenomenal and the server clearly knew what to do with someone who has celiac. They even explained the precautions for the gelato. Highly recommend

LOVED the food here!!! It really felt like you were in a little European restaurant inside. It was small but that added to the charm. The pizza was some of the best gluten free pizza I’ve ever had and my non gluten free family said they could not taste any difference between the two. Be warned that it is more authentic so the toppings aren’t the typical American toppings. The gelato definitely has a risk of cross-contamination just like most scooped ice cream places but all of flavors that don’t have like cookies and stuff are gluten free. I’m very sensitive and I didn’t get sick. Loved the experience, loved the food. This is a very special little restaurant.

Mercurio’s gluten free pizza is hands down the best GF pizza I have had in 14 years of being gluten free (Celiac). It was so amazing that I had to ask about three times to make sure it was gluten free and that they hadn’t made a mistake. They seem to be very careful about cross-contamination and have good processes in place. Shadyside is a great neighborhood and the ambiance is nice. Definitely recommend if you’re in Pittsburgh!!

this is the BEST pizza ive had since my celiac diagnosis. i was nervous to eat in a shared restaurant but the server told me everything is prepared separately. its been two days and NO symptoms (and i am sensitive to cross contamination). i will be back!!! they now have gluten free available everyday but you have to do dine-in

By far, the best gluten free pizza in Pittsburgh. Great wood fire taste, soft chewy crust, fresh ingredients. I now eat there often because so many measures are taken to prevent cross contamination. I’ve never been sick here thankfully so I keep going back!

They have gluten free dough (daily, an older review stated it was just weekdays). It tasted amazing! When I went gluten free, one of my first thoughts was, “ugh, I can never have Mercurios again”. I was so glad to see they have gluten free pizza. It tasted just as great as their regular dough from what I remember.

Celiac friendly?

Yes

They only serve gluten-free crust M-W because they make a solid effort to prevent cross contamination. They make the dough in a separate kitchen and the wood fired oven gets to a temperature that degrades gluten but they still use the same work surfaces and utensils even though they’ve been washed and they serve regular crusts in the same prep area. I can only assume that’s what caused enough cross-contamination for our Nima sensor to indicate the presence of gluten in my daughter’s GF pizza. They took the cost off our bill but obviously it was pretty disappointing. If you’re only gluten-sensitive it might be fine as others obviously have high ratings but my daughter is a highly sensitive celiac so we didn’t risk it.

Awesome gluten free crust! My second favorite of all time! Wish is was going to be here longer so I could get it again. Only offers mon, tues, and wed (their slow days) so the can ensure a Celiac-safe cooking environment.

Great overall but only offer gluten free certain days . They also really take the allergy seriously that why it's limited to slow days.
