Great experience and felt safe eating here! The staff were very knowledgeable about gluten free options/mods on the menu and measures were taken to prevent cross contact (potatoes baked instead of fried). Didn’t have any reactions afterwards! I got the soul in a bowl modified to be gluten free, and my partner got the breakfast gnocchi with chicken bangers (also gluten free!)
Menu was labeled and some items that weren’t labeled GF could be made that way. I was torn between 3 options, which is saying a lot because most places there aren’t three GF options that I really want. I had a delicious breakfast poutine! I didn’t order one with pesto sauce so I don’t know if that was part of my substitution or a mistake but it came with a creamy pesto sauce that was SO good.
A great experience! The server confirmed the staff are knowledgeable about cross contamination. He confirmed what I could have on the menu: their waffle has its own designated waffle maker and they have oven roasted potatoes that are gluten free (since their regular potatoes have flour) He advised not to do anything fried since it’s shared. But could even create a gluten free pancake. It was an excellent breakfast!
I like the downtown location better - this one is a bit squished for seating when using a mobility device. Again, OEB is excellent at serving those with CD with safe food. I was with 4 celiacs and no issues! The waffles which are GF and served unknown of their status to everyone, are excellent!
I ate here with friends for breakfast, one without sensitivities, one NCGS, and myself. We all really enjoyed our food. The NCGS were really excited to eat such good food that we were confident was gluten-free. The server took note that my food couldn't be contaminated, and she said they could accommodate. I had the gluten-free belgian waffle, and it was really good. I wouldn't have known it was gluten-free. The NCGS had an eggs Benny on gluten free muffins and a side of gluten-free breakfast potatoes.
I had the breakfast gnocchi. I informed the server I had a gluten allergy and she confirmed I was celiac and couldn’t tolerate cross contamination. She even double checked the ingredients with the chef just to be sure. When the food was dropped off, she re-iterated that it was gluten free with no cross contamination. I felt very safe and comfortable throughout the dining experience.
The food was so good! Tons of GF choices and the staff was very knowledgeable about no cross contamination. They also offer for sale many of their items to take home to make yourself. Our celiac kiddo didn’t like the GF waffles, but the rest of our party did. She did like the chia pudding, the bacon and the cheesy eggs. Very big portions too!
Server was excited to help find safe options, but not super knowledgeable herself, so she doubled checked everything with the kitchen. A few items labelled as gluten free (safe waffles!) but was told majority of the menu can be made safe with substitutions. Substituted pan fried potatoes and gluten free bread no problem! Choice overload and no reaction are always a big win!
Hugely popular venue with long lines so try to book ahead. Whilst menu shows some GF options, almost the whole menu can be adapted to be GF and celiac safe - I did suggest that updating their menu to reflect that would be worthwhile. Staff are knowledgeable and cross contamination is taken seriously. I had a scramblette, lunch mates had bowls, all were awesome
The waffle was delicious and from my understanding, only gluten-free batter is used in this particular waffle maker. The servers didn’t always strike me as fully understanding of gluten free for celiacs specifically, but with that said, I felt safe enough and I don’t think I got glutened?
So take what you will from this review, but I ate the same meal again at another OEB location and was fine… do ask questions tho!
The waitress explained that the meats like bacon and chicken sausage would be fried on the same grill as pancakes, so they weren’t safe to order. She asked the kitchen if the pork in the breakfast tacos would be safe, and it was! The breakfast tacos were quite good but not amazing. Still it was a nice place to eat with knowledge staff.
