Very limited choices here. Seriously, a Mexican restaurant that cannot serve gluten free corn tortilla chips (that means no chips and salsa) or even tacos or enchiladas should rethink how they buy their products -it shouldn't be that hard for a big restaurant chain. There is a Mexican restaurant a few miles away in West Chester where someone with celiac can have all the choices On The Border doesn't offer. Maybe they'll let us know if they get it right, otherwise I'll be driving to West Chester.
Gluten free menu provided but kitchen staff was disorganized and got multiple orders wrong for the people at our table ordering from the regular menu so it was not surprising to me that my daughter became sick hours after eating from the gluten free children’s offerings.
They dont take any kind of gluten free precautions for preparing food. while some menu items are gluten free, they are not made in an allergy safe gluten free area and they do not use designated gluten free utensils. i used to work here as a host and to go person, i watched first hand how they prepare and cook the food. after i was diagnosed with celiac i could not eat anything they made there, not even the chips as theyre made in the same fryer as fried chimichangas and chicken strips.
The staff was knowledgeable (and when they didn’t know, they asked!) I had a delicious meal, and felt great
Went to the to go pick up window. Wasn’t expecting much and I was right. Asked what was gluten free or for gluten sensitive and got the look—- then the uhh I don’t know let me check. Was left there 10 minutes. She finally came back so I just ordered a salad. Pulled up app and got the mango vinegar dressing. 20 minutes later picked it up . Very underwhelming. I would think in an airport they would give people SOME training . I guess not.
I ordered chicken enchiladas (w sour cream sauce) omg it was sooooo good! Spoke w the manager before I ordered. They will warm corn tortillas up in microwave to avoid CC. Tortilla chips are in shared fryer so I didn’t get them. This meal was excellent and I didn’t get sick! Highly recommend!
The food was amazing! I ordered the chicken enchilada, Mexican rice, re-fried beans and the watermelon margarita. No bad reaction, and the food was awesome! I only wish the tortilla chips were gluten free! Bring your own bag of chips and you can enjoy the yummy salsa, guacamole, and cheese dip!
The manager Holly Fry and her staff are always very considerate and helpful of my gluten free diet because of celiac desease. I have never had issues after eating at the resturant. On the Boarder does have a GF menu. One down fall is they soak the onions in soy sauce for the fajitas; therefore, no onions with fajitas, which is a sad thing for me!
Staff was knowledgeable, the enchiladas were very good. We tested the food with the Nima gluten tester and it was indeed gluten free. They said the Tortilla chips came from a separate fryer and were also gluten free (but we didn’t test these). Very good experience.
Gluten Free menu. Server was not afraid to go ask manager when she was unsure of our GF questions. She wanted to make sure everything was done right for us. We ordered the queso. Then, the steak fajitas w/o the onions. Fajitas were served with a substitution of cilantro lime rice and black beans which were fabulous!!!
So we read all the reviews and we’re going to try this place. But the staff seemed confused when we asked about if the chips were safe to eat or not. And didn’t really seem to know anything about celiac disease we decided not to risk it. Since staff was so uncertain
We have eaten here safely and did feel they tried really hard to impress us and keep us safe. They have excellent food, and many things are naturally gluten-free. They have a very clear "gluten-friendly" menu. They don't guarantee they are celiac safe, but my husband had no reaction. THE CHIPS ARE NOT SAFE. Avoid those, because they DO NOT have a dedicated fryer. Salsa and cheese dip are safe though, in case you want it on something else (or to grab a spoon). Great experience. Just be careful and try to order simple. I'd give five stars if the chips were safe!
The restaurant offers a GF menu, but the servers don't seem to know about it. We got the menu from the hostess, told the waiter we wanted the fish tacos from the gluten free menu, and he proceeded to bring us fish breaded in beer batter. We told him that we wanted the grilled tacos from the GF menu and he said they have grilled fish. We again referred to the GF menu and he said, "I've worked here 7 years. I've never heard of anything grilled."
They do not have a dedicated fryer. I got sick off the chips or the corn tortillas. They have a gluten free menu but it does not promise that you will have a gluten free experience. I am paying for this lunch twice. Ugh!
The staff was amazing! I requested to talk to the chef and they make my entree exactly how I needed it. They have a GF menu as well and the manager made me a margarita using GF vodka. The best experience. I brought my own chips, so I can’t give any review over the chips ;)
Dalton, our server was very knowledgeable about gf. They now have dedicated friers for the chips!! My daughter was able to have a great gf meal there! He said they were willing and able to work around what she wanted to eat, and if possible they would make it gf! Wish there was one of these near our home in NC!
I gave them 1 star because you can’t give zero stars. Run, don’t walk, they have ZERO idea what they are doing. We asked for gluten free menus, waiter laughed in our faces ( no kidding ), then he fumbled thru some 3 ring binder for a couple of minutes, then the manager came over and fumbled thru the same binder, and we said enough. Not going to take the gamble, didn’t even try the food. It’s was painfully obvious this was not a focus of theirs.
Server asked if it was real or fake allergy, and joked about how she would bring out flour shells to see if people were telling the truth. Sure enough... we got sick. Our server obviously didn’t take the allergy seriously and was not trained properly
I asked both our waitress and the manager before ordering and was assured that the tacos were with white corn, not flour. I have been so sick; after deeper research they don’t even have that option so they have my flour ones and lied to me after I asked again to confirm. They are not aware of the allergies or issues and obviously don’t care enough about their customers to validate. If I could give ZERO starts I would! Stay clear for your health’s sake!
I had the grilled shrimp tacos, black beans, and rice. I’ve also tried the fish tacos before. If only their chips were safe ☹️ if you have gf salsa & some entrees and sides - why not buy a bag of Santitas to have on hand for people that are Celiac or gluten intolerant 🤔
Very good food, but you have to be very careful about how you order it. I would always order the build your own chicken tacos off the gluten free menu. I kept getting sick eating there and couldn’t figure out what was causing it. Someone finally told me that the taco shells are fried in the same oil as the other shells (that of which contain gluten). I would say it’s unsafe for someone with an allergy because the waiter doesn’t ask if it’s an allergy.
Celiac (sensitive) kiddo had kids meal build your own tacos (had to ask for corn tortillas) refried beans and rice. No qualms! Great service, understanding staff. Very accommodating and food was yummy for the rest of us. WIN!
