Salt & Straw takes allergens pretty seriously, this was yet another successful experience at one of their locations. Long line but it moved quickly.
Upon ordering simply mentioned celiac/gluten 'allergy' - I knew what I wanted was GF before I arrived, half honey lavender half strawberry honey balsamic with black pepper. My sever wanted to double check anyway on his allergen list which I appreciated. He asked if he could make the rest of my parties ice cream then would do mine in the back from unopened containers/clean scoop. It took quite some time so I have faith their implemented allergen procedures were followed. Ice cream was excellent, especially the strawberry my favorite! Many GF options available!
So many ice cream places will not accommodate me on getting ice cream from clean containers in the back so I really appreciate Salt & Straw making this easy at any location. Training goes a long way and it shows!
This was a great experience all around. Friendly staff, interesting flavors, great ice cream. I got the double vanilla (risk free choice) and some sort of vegan mint chocolate chip. I am not vegan, and it was good.
The staff apologized for having to scoop our ice cream from the back. There are waffle cones everywhere, so that was no problem with us. We stepped aside, and they brought our ice cream out to us safe from cross contamination. Great job.
I stumbled upon this place without any prior research. Their menu marks which ice creams contain wheat. I was pleasantly surprised when staff members were taking requests for samples from guests in line and asked first if you had any allergies. When I said gluten, he then asked if I needed to be careful about cross-contamination. As a Celiac, I do, and he didn’t hesitate. He knew exactly what to do. He grabbed fresh pints out of the to-go freezer and scooped my samples (and my eventual order) from there. I was so impressed!
As for the ice cream, when they say salt, they aren’t kidding. I LOVE salted caramel ice cream but this was too salty for me. Instead I got a seasonal offering with lemons and blueberries that turned out to be vegan, but you could have fooled me. So creamy!
I enjoyed the GF DF bananas foster ice cream, tons of flavor. The only downfall to this place is that they used a shared ice cream scoop for all of their flavors. It's not a dedicated facility, so there is a high chance of cross contact. For that reason my celiac husband did not have any.
If you tell them you are gluten free and in my case dairy free they will gladly grab a fresh pint of what you want and bring it to a separate area to scoop out your ice cream. All of this makes me feel very comfortable.
And obviously this ice cream is one of the best in the world! Now that I’m gluten free and dairy free I pretty much always get the mint, and maybe a scoop of a seasonal.
