We were excited to finally get a gf donut! We drove 30 minutes out of our way to get there and were very displeased to be told by the person behind the counter that they aren’t gluten free. She referred to their donuts as “gluten friendly” which is normally the “we can’t guarantee their won’t be any cross contamination” answer you get everywhere, but went on to explain that while their donuts are made using gluten free flour they dust the finished products with flour so they don’t stick to the racks they store them on. She then seemed surprised that we were not going to get any. That was possibly the most frustrating part because she didn’t seem to understand that we don’t eat gluten because it would make us ill, and that it isn’t just a fad. I would give this place negative stars if I could.
As a gluten intolerant person and not full-blown celiac I decided to give these donuts a try as shared fryers normally do not bother me. However, within about 45 minutes of eating a doughnut my gut was in spasms and I was stuck in the bathroom, Don’t do it!
Donuts are cut on the same dough table as regular donuts (meaning they are coated in wheat flour) and fried in a shared fryer before being dunked in the same glaze as the regular donuts. Sugar Shack is amazing for non-GF people and fad-dieters but no one with an allergy should eat here. Staff is knowledgeable and will inform you of that.
Best doughnuts ever. Celiac safe only on Wednesday's and Saturday's. If you speak to one of the workers they will clean the entire kitchen and make fresh doughnuts for you on the spot. Have gone many, many times and haven't gotten sick. Delicious!
The brick and mortar location is not Gluten Free and is not safe for Celiacs. The woman said it's "Gluten Friendly," meaning they use GF ingredients but the same dough table and the same oil as their gluten items. Cross-contamination risk is extremely high and I did not risk getting sick. She said there's a GF Truck they have at some point in the year, but that was of no help to me when I visited this location. The staff was extremely apologetic and seemed to sincerely be sad that I couldn't eat anything there, but honestly I wish they just didn't advertise that location as having GF options since that's not actually true for those of us who get sick if we consume gluten. "Gluten Friendly" is NOT THE SAME as Gluten Free.
Today was the first time they offered GF doughnuts at this location. They were delicious! Many different options and they kept the doughnuts in a separate location. Be sure to call ahead and make sure they have them. However they do advise that while they do their best there is always risk of cross contamination.
Stopped in today to ask about the gluten-free donuts and she said to let me know that they are made in the same kitchen so if you have a gluten allergy it's not considered safe what the ingredients are gluten-free and that they only make the gluten-free donuts on a Saturday she was really sweet and super helpful. If you're going with family who can have gluten then the mocha lattes are gluten-free it's made with Garrett deli chocolate espresso and steamed milk in there they're delicious so although they do offer a gluten-free doughnut I would say it's not safe for celiac
Sugar Shack has opened a dedicated gluten free donut truck! They offer different flavors and they are absolutely delicious! Right now they are only doing the food truck a couple days a week so check hours and location of truck beforehand!
