I went here based on other good reviews. The restaurant was not busy and we waited forever for our food, which was expensive and not that good. I just ordered a gf burger and salad. Fries are not gluten free. It was definitely not that good, especially for a $15 burger and sucky service.
Overall, the food was quite tasty, and I’d rate it higher except for multiple snafus, both gluten-related and not. The waiter, who was new, was unaware that there was a GF menu, as it had said on this app, so I found it on their website and showed it to him. (He was otherwise wonderful and attentive.) However: my steak arrived wearing a large glutinous roll like a crown. :-/ I also can’t have dairy, or potatoes, and I’m pretty sure the asparagus was buttered, not oiled, as it tasted deliciously buttery. I had ordered a sweet potato in lieu of regular, but after about an hour went by and no food, they came back and said they just wouldn’t get done. Then, they said they had run out of my companion’s order, crab cakes. After an hour. No, seriously. They comped our meals, and gave us coupons, which did make it all okay...but “gluten-risky” is how I would rate this place. The waiter conveyed the appropriate info to the line, and yet. The roll. Sigh.
My husband and I love this restaurant! They have a separate gf menu with salad, steaks, and sandwiches. We've been several times and I've never gotten sick (I'm highly sensitive). Great steaks and you have to try the "kitchen sink" on gluten free bread! AMAZING!
After getting sick at a few restaurants I was nervous to eat out again. For me, gluten and dairy cause a lot of pain and gut issues that I've delt with since I was a child, I've only recently figured out it was gluten and dairy. I read the reviews about Ted's and decided to give it a try. Before we were seated I asked for the gluten-free menu. The server was great and understood my concerns. I ordered the bison filet, sweet potato no butter and the kale salad with no corn salsa or dressing but I asked for olive oil. The food was absolutely fantastic and I indeed felt I could trust the cookstaff. As my friend and I were enjoying our meal the owner came by and asked how everything was, genuinely concerned since I ordered the "special request". I told him my situation and how I read that Ted's has a separate fryer and such. He said yes and that they make sure my kind of meal is done right. Wow! I will absolutely come back. It's now four hours since the meal and I feel great. I appreciated finding a place that understands how serious our requests are. Thank you Ted's in Alexandria, VA, Old Town
Ribeye was delicious. Most the menu is burgers without the bun. Wait staff was not knowledgeable and didn't notice the different menus. The broccoli was ordered dry and showed up with cheese on it. Either the waitress or the chef weren't knowledgeable. I'll try again if I don't get sick.
Awesome. So many choices and environmentally conscious too!
Had dedicated gluten free menu with a lot to chooses from. I got the bison filet with baked potato and asparagus. I am also peanut intolerant so I asked the server about that. She was able to answer right away. Order came fairly quickly and I have to say that for the money, everything was worth every penny. Everything tasted very good and I have to say that the filet was the best I EVER tasted. I’m not used to being able to have a filling meal with 2 sides but I was very impressed! I had absolutely no digestive issues afterwards. I will definitely be back.
Overall very good experience! I ordered their beef burger on a gluten free bun with a side of French fries (dedicated GF fryer). The patty was a bit over cooked but that’s my only complaint. Service was good!
Dedicated gluten-free menu with a sizable amount of options. Have gotten the Skinny Dip and added a GF bun, with kale salad, and plain sweet potato twice - 👍. Very tasty and no adverse reactions either time. Thanks Ted’s!
They had a dedicated fryer and gluten free buns! The buns were not bad! It's been about 5 hours since my meal and I'm not sick. They change gloves and everything. They seem very aware of cross contamination.
Food was amazing and if you sit at the bar you can see the staff cooking the meal right in front of you. I got steak, asparagus, & fries (separate frier). They had a ton of other sides to choose from that are gluten free as well. Unfortunately, there is no gf dessert option other than vanilla ice cream.
The experience was good overall. As a newly diagnosed celiac, this is one of three places I have tried to trust. Our server seemed to totally understand the term “celiac” and provided their gluten free menu. The food was delicious, but my body’s reaction was not. I definitely think that somehow I got “glutened”; probably should have asked more questions and been more assertive rather than just trusting the menu and assuming the severity was fully understood. I would recommend that celiacs tread with caution and excessive communication.
I’ve gotten sick from their fries even though they said they were safe. I have also found onion mixed in with my lettuce when I specified I am highly allergic to onion. If you are highly sensitive, I do not recommend eating here.
NOT SAFE! My son started to eat his food and we just confirmed it's safe. Server checked and said the kitchen missed the gluten allergy call out on the ticket. Wife ordered the veggie burger and the cook came out to let her know there was panko crumbs in it and said he was confused between vegan and GF?? Manager was very apologetic.
Server was amazing when it came to all the inquiries we had but unfortunately the kitchen didn’t do so well. Taste was fine not celiac friendly regardless of the Gluten Free menu offerings (that are cooked on same cookware and fryers as non-GF food). Got sick even with warnings, will not be a next time for us.
I felt reasonably safe, and didn’t feel sick afterwards. However, the service was so awful, it was hard to overlook and therefore made me question the safety of my food while eating. I felt like I wasn’t really being listened to when placing my order, and the server did not seem knowledgeable. Open kitchen, for what it’s worth. I had a bison burger, and the meat was over cooked beyond my request, but still good. However, the generic gluten free bun ($$$$) was cold and crumbled. Would have been better off with a lettuce wrap of the meat or no bun. Extremely slow service, even taking into consideration it was a weekend. Server had our table as well as 5+ others, including a party of 11 people right next to us.
Ask for the kitchen manager! He was phenomenal. Separate GF French fry fryer. My husband tried the GF bun and he said it was excellent. I went bunless on my burger and t was great. Got the Avalon, listen.... the aoli is excellent but if they’re not willing to go get it out from the back don’t get it bc it’s constantly being spread on regular bread. They offered and I accepted, delicious. I wanna subtract stars bc our waiter honestly was useless, he didn’t know what celiac was or understand GF so I politely asked for the kitchen manager and he ignored us the rest of the time, never asked how our food was and took forever on the check. BUT, the kitchen manager WAS SO KNOW and well versed in cross contamination and such that we have to go w a 5 here. He has a food science degree. As always, ask solid questions and figure out for yourself what is safe rather than just trusting the gluten free menu. Make sure to get them to change their gloves and etc.
We have just had an excellent meal here. I am gluten intolerant. They have a gluten free menu and the waitress was very helpful indeed. I had the bison avalon burger which was really delicious with a very nice gluten free bun. The setting is quite cosy with booths around the edge and table seating in the middle. I would definitely eat there again.
Love the decor. Gluten free options were great, on a separate menu. The employees were knowledgeable. The gf bun for the burgers is AMAZING. It's soft and squishy. It's light and airy. I was very impressed that they even offered some vanilla ice cream or a root beer float for dessert. I loved my meal - those burgers are HUGE. Fries are delicious. No complaints, only compliments. I'll be back!
A+ Cealiac friendly, dedicated fried for chips and fries.... but the Steaks are Amazing! They have a real GF menu, nothing on the menu is cross contaminated like sometimes I see on other GF menus that are fried in combined fries. Anyhoo. Highly recommend. We had a great meal and awesome server.
Wow, this is now my favorite burger place. Great buns and French fries and the burger is delicious. I never would have tried this place but for staying with someone at a nearby hospital. Will definitely be coming back here regularly. I’m looking forward to trying the salmon, too.
Gf buns and a separate fryer for fries. Very Celiac friendly!
Excellent service! Fast and Polite and totally understood the difference between someone who has a severe celiac‘s allergy versus someone who just enjoys eating gluten free food. I highly recommend coming here and eating without worrying about getting sick!! 👌👍👍
Ted's USE to be my families "go-to" gluten free restaurant, eating there every weekend. Really great gluten free menu and with a sever allergy we felt very comfortable. We had one experience where our food came out clearly mixed with gluten items. Understanding mistakes are made we continued to be loyal customers. On our next visit we were told by one waiter that the entire gf menu was safe and then by another waiter that a few items on the exclusively gf menu was not in fact safe to eat. Then, during this same visit found that, yet again, there was clear cross contamination. I'm not certain if the management has changed or the kitchen staff but something has clearly occurred that makes me no longer trust that this particular Ted's is a safe place to for gf eaters. The good news is that there is another restaurant down on Evergreen Walk that is SO careful and has an unbelievable and expansive gluten free menu: Burton's!
