Great food - very knowledgeable staff. Everything that goes in their fryer is gf (even the beer battered fish and chips is made with gluten free beer [Green’s]). Menu is clearly marked for allergies and they have a dedicated prep area on their grill for GF items as well.
I eat here so often that I should have a membership. The waiters literally know me by name now lol. Almost everything on the menu is gluten free to begin with but they take good allergies very seriously. The chef has a gluten intolerance and food allergies herself and used to be a paramedic so she gets it. They have a separate cooking area and dedicated fryer. The electronic orders get tagged with your specific food allergy. It’s the only not 100% gf place I trust. I always feel safe eating here and the food is great! Completely celiac friendly!
I’ve been here at LEAST 10 times, I’m a very sensitive celiac and I’ve never gotten sick. They take allergies seriously and they have a dedicated area where they prepare gluten free meals. The menu is also gluten friendly, pretty much the entire menu is/can be gluten free. Fahad has been our server every time and he’s one of the best. He knows how to treat allergies and provides quick and efficient service. LOVE THIS PLACE !!! Favorite of all time. Most delicious food. Excellent service. Awesome menu. And celiac approved!
Fabulous place. Almost all items are gluten free. The staff is very contious about celiac. All friers are dedicated and gluten free. We tested that fries and the sauce on the ribs using Elisa test and it was negative. They also have a full bar and beer for the non-celiac people in the group.
We flew into New York for a GF food tour and Broadway shows for my 49th Birthday - this was our first stop and I was so glad they were open late! We had 2 reeeeellly good GF Ciders - the GF Jalapeño Corn Fritters that we’re light and fluffy - my husband had the baked organic pasta -I had the GF fish and chips - sooooo light and crunchy and the fish was excellent! Next time I go to New York I will absolutely be back!!
I came here on a busy Saturday night a little earlier than my reservation time and we didn't have to wait long before being seated. I loved everything about this place! Had to get the Nicole cocktail (obviously) which was fresh and tasted great when made with gin. I was beyond excited about all of the gluten free options and how the server asked about allergies/was knowledgable. They also value the ingredients they serve, which you can tell when tasting everything. I got my own GF garlic bread to start with a tomato jam which is a plus. The Halloumi fries were a generous portion for an appetizer (in a good way). The GF fried chicken served with mashed potatoes & charred kale, and the pork belly with sweet fries went beyond my expectations. The desserts, made in house, were also pretty good, alongside a shot of espresso. Check this place out!
Super nice. I tried to be lowkey about my Celiacs (I was on a date and it was my first time eating out since being diagnosed), but at the mention of it they had the chef come out and discuss things with me. Very good food and shockingly good gluten free bread.
I've never felt more welcome in a restaurant. the staff cared about me getting a good meal as much as I wanted one! I'm addition to being GF, I have several other food allergies to worry about... no problem for this place! they have a dedicated fryer and several delicious gf options. the chef treated my list of allergies like a puzzle to be solved (rather than an imposition) - so refreshing & made my holiday meal perfect!
Staff was very reassuring about ordering from the gluten free menu. I ordered the calamari and beer battered fish and chips. Beer used in the fish and chips is a truly gluten free beer, not the gluten removed type. Fish and chips was a very generous portion and the sweet potato fries were delicious. The calamari was excellent, I loved their spicy sauce to go with, but wish they had some marinara to go with it as well. I have celiac disease and am very sensitive to cross contamination and I did not get. I would absolutely go back to try out the rest of their menu!
Fabulous meal!! Almost everything on the menu was GF, each dish more delish than the last. We had meatballs, fried calamari, fish tacos, fried fish (cod) & chips, a ribeye steak, caramelized pumpkin, and total WOW desserts including a sticky date pudding that was just out of this world. Knowledgeable staff, high-quality & sustainably sourced meats/fish. An Australian gem in Astoria!
The restaurant is mostly GF, the bun I had with my burger was the best GF bun I've had anywhere. We also had fried calamari which was delicious and not greasy at all. The deserts are delicious. If you go for brunch, you get a complimentary drink with your meal. I highly recommend this restaurant.
Phenomenal food! Plenty of gf celiac safe options including the specials of the day! We had the grilled octopus, the fried calamari, the pasta of the day and the egg plant Parmesan! All super tasty!! The only downside is they were sorely understaffed for a Saturday night.
This place does a fantastic job of accommodating for any and all food allergies and are more than willing to work with you to customize your meal! I would strongly recommend this location to anyone looking for quality allergy friendly food!!
small restaurant. delicious food with Australian flare. serves great drinks. lovely atmosphere. lots of wonderful gluten free options, including atheists and desserts. Things you can't normally find -- fried calamari and fish and chips. I look forward to eating here when I am in New York.
Pros: great options, everything tasted great. Friendly atmosphere and a good place to bring veg, carnivore, gf & not gf. No reaction! We had the following and recommend them all: Sticky pudding!! Jalapeño corn fritters Vegan tacos Eggplant parmigiana Mousaka Melbourne (Greek) Salad Mashed potatoes Cons: our waitress was not that knowledgeable and they mistakenly served mousaka with regular bread. However, the chef came running out and noticed immediately after dish was placed on the table and it was fixed right away.
We went to this restaurant the other day and absolutely loved it. Wait was a bit long but that's what happens when you ask for a table of 5 for dinner on the weekend. Food was delicious and the staff was really friendly and knowledgeable. Dedicated fryer and some of the best gluten free buns I have ever had. I tried the Fried Calamari, corn jalapeño fritters, and ate the Ned Kelly steak sandwich. Every bite was delicious. At the end of our meal the chef stopped by to introduce herself and ask how everything was. She told us that she is gluten intolerant and stressed how much they care about being careful with gluten free food. I highly recommend eating here.
Absolutely awesome experience. The fried calamari is the best I've had. When we ordered the calamari, I commented that I was Celiac and made sure it was REALLY gluten free. The waitress then asked if I had a dairy allergy because there is dairy in the calamari (I'm not dairy intolerant so I'm not sure if it can be made dairy free as it wasn't applicable to me). Impressed that they knew those are often hand in hand. Friendly staff. Good happy hour. Excellent for Celiacs and they do it right here.
Our experience was SO wonderful. I felt like I wasn't restricted by GF at all because they had so many options. We went for an app, drink and dessert. Fried calamari for an app, pear cider for a drink, and the sticky date pudding cake for dessert! Everything was so delicious and my non GF hubby loved it. I would highly recommend trying the Thirsty Koala because they have so much more than the typical GF restaurant. PLUS their service was exceptional!!! Waitresses were so friendly and conversational, AND one of the owners came to talk with us! She was genuinely interested in getting to know us. We will be back for sure!!
I'm a sensitive Celiac that went for Mother's Day with my non-celiac family. They offer almost every dish gluten free and most can be modified for dairy free as well. We shared apps like calamari and Thea's meatballs that are made gluten free and nobody noticed the difference. The sliders are AMAZING! I highly recommend and will be back.
So. Good. As a vegetarian with celiac, I think this might be my new favorite restaurant. The menu was extensive and nearly everything could be made gluten free if it wasn't already. I was a little worried about cross contamination but they're very knowledgable and clearly make an effort to keep their customers safe and happy. The food was delicious (my gluten-able friends also loved it, so that's saying something too!) and they even brought out gluten free bread for the table before our food arrived. When was the last time I ate the bread on the table at a restaurant?! Thirsty Koala, I'll be back.
Many GF options to choose from as the chef is gluten intolerant. Delicious food with Australian roots. Fits perfectly into Astoria dining scene! Never picked a GF menu choice I didn't LOVE! Try the triple blonde GF beer, too (my fave). Knowledgable staff and chef make me feel safe eating here, even though I'm a celiac sensitive to cross-contamination on a microscopic level. Have safely and happily eaten at The Thirsty Koala many times & probably will many more!
The food is great and safe, but they have the WORST delivery service. It took almost 2 hours to get our food recently. We had to continuously call to ask where it was. If you want to order from here, call way in advance before you are even hungry.
You will never feel like you're missing out on good food by being GF here. Everything on the menu is clearly spelled out for allergen concerns. Several vegetarian and vegan options as well. And the GF options are absolutely delicious. Definitely the place to be for Happy Hour, too! I will be returning often.
