Excellent dinner and the GF food was clearly marked. The waitress has a daughter who has Celiacs as well so she was very well versed in GF issues.

We visited on a busy weekend night last weekend for dinner. I ordered the perloo and while it tasted good at the time, I definitely had some cross-contamination issues later. (Could’ve been the mixed drink I had too though, not sure.)

Items that are gluten free or can be made gluten free are marked on the menu. The crab dip appetizer is gluten free (except for the pita bread of course, but our waitress got the kitchen to bring the gluten free tortilla chips and pita bread on separate dishes). Highly recommend. I got a burger on gluten free bread (not bun), and one of the many many sides that are gluten free. When the bread came out, it looked suspicious, and the waitress happily confirmed it was gluten free before I dug in. Like another review says, if you can, you should request Cookie as your waitress. She has a daughter with celiac and was very accommodating.

This is one of our go-to stops when we come to HHI. We love to sit outside and enjoy the live music and patio atmosphere. I always get the shrimp and grits which is amazing and I’ve never gotten sick. Ask for Cookie…she took great care of us!

GOT GLUTENED!! AVOID IF CELIAC. Had shrimp burger on gluten free bread but was severely ill just a few hours later. We specifically ask if the bread was gf when it came and was told yes. We also asked what was in the burger was told just shrimp. Had a side of fruit. Something had gluten in it.

Went at lunch time and got a burger on gf bread and potato chips (they have Udi’s bread for both burgers & sandwiches). Also got banana pudding that was made gf. They make a gf vanilla wafer for it. Just have to ask for it gf. Good atmosphere and service.

Great food, down home cooking style. They can even make the banana puddin’ gluten free. Service was awesome and had us feeling right at home!

Very good and no problems at all. We are here twice during our stay. Had the bbq chicken sandwich with pimento cheese the first time which was great! The second visit I ordered the burger and it wasn't the best (but that was my fault because the waitress warned me that the bun makes the burger and obviously I couldn't have the bun)

This is one of our go to spots in HH. Never have had a problem. Crab dip app (ask for double tortilla chips/no pita) is awesome. Catch of the day sandwich on gf bread always good too. Potato chip meatloaf nice twist. Owners are very celiac aware.

What we ate was gluten free. The food was mediocre, especially for the price. All the staff did not seem happy to be there. It was ok but probably won’t go back.

I ordered the Low County boil which is labeled gluten free on the menu. What I didn’t realize was that they switched crab for crab cakes without notifying us and I took a bite before I realized it was not supposed to be a part of the boil platter. Sadly I am now waiting to feel sick because the crab cakes are not gluten free. I didn’t specifically mention that I am gluten free but I would hope menu items would come as listed unless otherwise notified by the server

I informed my server that I was both gf and egg intolerant. She seemed very experienced and very sympathetic to my needs. She asked me what I was interested in ordering and I told her the purloo special. She said she was sure that would work for me. Sadly I was sick the next day. So sad since I loved this restaurant prior to my diagnosis.

We had the low country boil for 2. It was alright. The shrimp were extremely overdone and super hard to peel. The listing should say crab legs so you can make sure to have the right tools to eat them— we did not.
The side of grits were amazing and very tasty!
**PLEASE NOTE_- they are not open for dine-in during the pandemic. We only found this out by driving to the restaurant. It is not listed anywhere that I can find.

I loved this place so much that I returned for a second visit during our trip to celebrate my birthday. Both visits I had the shrimp and grits which was delicious. My family all enjoyed their gluten options as well. We sat outside and enjoyed the entertainment. There was a different singer for our 2 visits at dinner and they were both good.

This was my second time dining here and I’ve enjoyed both meals immensely. This time I had the BBQ grilled chicken sandwich on GF bread with grits as my side dish - all of it was delicious!
Yes
Amazing service and a large menu. Really cool outdoor atmosphere (visited in Feb so the weather was gorgeous). We got the Homemade Lowcountry Pimento Cheese (tortilla chips only) and the May River Blue Crab Dip (no flatbread); both were quite good. For entrees we had the Seafood Purloo and Potato Chip Meatloaf. Both dishes were passable, but neither wowed us. Definitely a safe option with plenty of choices, though we would skip this on future visits given the number of other options on HHI.
Yes
Delicious food. Lots to choose from. GF bread (kids got hamburgers). I had the fresh catch (Cobia) with rice and shrimp topping. Husband had something like a gumbo with Mahi. Highly recommend.
Yes
Best meal we’ve had on the island since we got here. I had the Purloo. My non celiac companions had the tomato sandwich. May be back tomorrow for the meatloaf.
Yes
Excellent selection of gluten free options. We love going here. Will most likely go multiple times during our trip!

We have eaten here on previous visits. They have items marked on their menu. I called ahead and they say they handle it often and have no hesitation. They told me on the phone they can do GF bread and cook it in a skillet separately. The server was knowledgeable. They make a meatloaf with potato chips and that is what the 2 Celiacs in our family ordered. One had a salad and the mashed potatoes which she really enjoyed. The other had the mashed potatoes and their very good lima beans. We did not have dessert, but if you ask they can specially make up the banana pudding to be GF (it is not marked on the menu as GF). Eat outside to get the full ambiance of the place. Great experience.

The staff was VERY knowledgeable and there were SO many GF options it was hard to decided. I got the meatloaf sandwich with grits and it was by far the best grits I’ve had. We will be going back for sure!
Had the tomato sandwich with fruit cup for Sunday brunch with no issues. They had GF options marked on the menu, but staff didnt seem very knowledgeable about avoiding cc.
Yes
Food is ok. Crab dip tasted like canned tuna...everything else frozen. A little lame after all the great reviews. Staff is super friendly and wonderful! Atmosphere is fabulous. Wish the food was better! So sad :(
Very popular with many gluten free options. We had gluten free meatloaf which is made with potato chips. It was excellent. The staff is very knowledgeable and even though the menu is clearly marked, they are happy to share how the food is prepared

Went for dinner last night -- many GF options (including a GF banana pudding)! Crab dip was also delicious! Wait staff seemed knowledgable.
We visited again 10/2017 and food was okay. I wasn't impressed with the quality.
To the point, no celiac issue.
Server understood celiac disease concerns, and menu indicated items with no gluten ingredients. Ordered a southern salad with grilled shrimp and a moonshine cocktail, as it had the last chance of cross contamination. It was quite good.
Seemed very busy, so a bit slow. Consider this if you have some time to wait.

the food was delicious, knowledgeable staff, fun decor, great live music

Great food! Chips are GF (not made in house). GF bread for sandwiches. Great options and wonderful, knowledgeable staff.

My little guy got the kids grilled cheese on GF bread and I had their GF meatloaf sandwich. Everything was so good, and I'm picky about meatloaf! Also, the mashed potatoes were probably the best I've ever had!!
Yes
Great restaurant! Fun environment, knowledgeable staff, and lots of GF options clearly marked. I have other food sensitivities and our waitress even went to consult the recipe book to make sure there were not any ingredients that I couldn't eat. I could not recommend it more.
This is a literal local gem!! Our family has been here for decades and no one had heard of this little spot. it's tucked away in a small Plaza, when you pull up you see a beautiful outdoor area. very cozy and quaint. We went for Sunday Brunch, and it was great everyone loved their entrees--except my husband's grits with his shrimp and grits was more like oatmeal. The flavor of the sausage and shrimp was spot on but the grits were a bit disappointment. We also tried their $3 mimosas. Instead of picking between their two options, we combined the cranberry and orange juice and coined it, "The Sunrise Mimosa". We will definitely be back here. They took our allergies very serious and everything is marked on the menu. Give this spot a shot!
Yes
Waiter was knowledgeable about GF choices. I had the Meat Loaf, very good taste, a little dry. Cole slaw also very good.
Yes
In fairness, we decided to pass. When we asked about their kitchen practices to avoid cross contamination the owner was honest and said they have no dedicated anything in the kitchen...that spatulas, tongs, etc are used on all orders so this place would be a nightmare for anyone who truly has Celiac. I applaud the owner's honesty and the menu looked wonderful, with little GF marks by many dishes, but the fact is that with their "very small kitchen" as he put it and their self-described lack of ANY attentiveness to the dangers of cross contamination, this could be a real, legitimate danger to anyone who is truly at the Celiac level of gluten intolerance.
No
Had a delicious Lowcountry Burger here. Was very pleased, food was awesome, didn't get sick.

Awesome locally owned restaurant with a gluten free bread and many gluten free options. I had the BBQ chicken sandwich with chips and it was amazing. Definitely recommend

Celiac knowledgeable servers. Menu items are marked GF. Lots of delicious options. Potato chip meatloaf is wonderful.

Service wasnt that great and about a 50 minute wait to be seated but if you're looking for a southern home cooked like meal, this is the place. Food was a bit pricey. I ordered the potato chip meatloaf and mash potatoes and it really was delicious. Would mostly recommend unless you don't have time to wait.
Yes
This place is sooo cute. Gluten free items are indicated on the menu. I got to wait on the bench swing while my take out order was prepared. I had the shrimp grits & side of apple raisin cole slaw. FYI service is slower but they do make note of this with signage since they have a small kitchen. Will be visiting again if I get to the chance!

Many gluten free options. My husband and I shared the Meatloaf and Shrimp and Grits. Both were excellent and I didn't get sick. I highly recommend.
I followed the recommended reviews and ordered the potato chip meatloaf and mashed potatoes - so wonderful! Service was great..appreciate the care they took and all the wonderful gf options! Thank you!
