I’ve eaten here twice, and had the tamales from the gluten sensitive menu both times. The first time I had them for lunch, and later that day felt kind of sick, but I was super pregnant and we had been driving all day, so didn’t think anything of it. The second time was also for lunch, and a few hours later I was sick as a dog. So, I definitely don’t feel like the tamales are celiac friendly. Unfortunately we won’t be back.
We came to Abuelos twice the week we were in Myrtle Beach for vacation because the food was that good. My wife has celiac and she loved the tacos. My son and I do not need to eat gluten-free and their fajitas and specialty dishes were so good. Their quest dip is awesome but it is a large order so only recommend if you have a group of four or more, or you can take it back as leftovers. We will definitely come back if we are in the area again.
Can I just say WOW! The place and food was absolutely amazing. The GF menu is part of the whole menu, but is dedicated to one spot, so not hunting down what we can and cannot eat. It does say gluten sensitive, but they were super careful to take care of me.
I ordered the fajitas and the bonus to it all was the chips and green salsa. Absolutely loved the salsa. I ordered the flan, and oh my…it melts in your mouth.
Our waitress, Rhonda, was very kind and helpful and the chef came out twice and spoke with us. Guys, I’m telling you…if you are at Myrtle Beach, this is definitely a place to go if you like Mexican!!
Waitress was super helpful and pleasant. When I walked in, the hostess made sure to tell me they’re gluten sensitive not gluten free but they will do their best to accommodate me. She also told me to tell the waitress right away that I need gf chips and not to eat the ones they initially bring out. I had tamales. They were good. Somewhat limited menu but it’s nice to have another alternative and the tropical salsa was great!
Ate there last night 7-12-2021 and I have to say, it was delicious! They have a GF page on their menu and I ordered the 3 soft taco plate. It came with a side of cilantro rice and beans. The seasoned beef on the tacos was outstanding. It was so good I feared I would end up sick. I’m a very sensitive stomached Celiac and I had zero issues eating here. They also brought out separate chips and salsa. The salsa was pretty plain, but it was still nice to have the option to eat chips and salsa like others there. Great experience!
If you want authentic Mexican food, this is not the place to get it. The gluten-free menu was extremely limited. The vegetarian menu was on the flip side of the gluten-free menu, and there was very little overlap (I’m a vegetarian, also dairy free). The waitress was very patient and helpful; she kept suggesting different items that were not really Mexican (such as a salad with mandarin orange slices). Finally, she recommended that I simply order a side of black beans, a side of cilantro rice, and a side of corn tortillas, and make my own tacos. I did just that, and the food was exactly what I was craving. But I wouldn’t go back if I wanted anything other than corporate food.
Gluten free menu has very limited options. I ordered corn tortillas and got flour tortillas. Thankfully I knew the difference. Got charged double for "happy hour" drinks. Food was mediocre.
Very little gf options. Waitress didn't tell us chips were fried with gluten until after we ate them. Food was worse tasting than taco bell and one taco was $3.99. Everyone in our party asked for no refried beans because they contained lard and half of them got beans anyway. Will NOT be going back there.
Service and food has always been great the many times I have eaten here. Staff always double checks to make sure the tortillas for the fajitas are gf. I eat vegetarian as well gf (celiac) and the kitchen has always accommodated my requests for different veggies to be used for the fajitas. Portions are huge and I always have enough leftovers for a second meal.
Chips were horrible. Both my daughter and I had issues after we ate their food and we ordered from their gf menu. My daughter felt so sick we had to go back to our hotel for the evening.
My wife ordered from the gluten free menu. Her dish came out not gluten free; with regular chips! When she asked about the chips, the food runner took the dish back to the kitchen returning a minute or two later. We asked if it was the same dish with the chips removed and she told us yes! The manager never came to the table! Staff does not seem trained and the general attitude does not inspire confidence in celiac sufferers!
Menu was not very extensive but the food was good. They offer gluten free chips it just takes a while to get them. The food is really good .
They do have a gluten-free menu with tacos, fajitas, tamales, salad, and dessert. They’ll make you fresh, gluten-free chips that are baked, not fried, for safety. My husband and I both ordered fajitas (mine GF and his not) and they sent the tortillas in the same container. Mine were corn tortillas wrapped up and his were flour tortillas underneath. We just carefully got mine out without touching anything else but next time I’ll specifically ask for them to be separate. I wouldn’t have thought they’d put them together.
Very few GF options. They made me some GF chips but they didn’t arrive until just before our meal. They do not have ala-cart menu options. I ordered the ground beef enchilada and they brought me steak. The guacamole was excellent..it was the only redeeming experience. Service was extremely slow and inattentive.
