I had eaten at another Bartaco and had an amazing experience so I came to this one with the same expectations. Well, I was disappointed. The service was not great. I am worried after eating and then reading the other comments that I have eaten gluten. Too late now! I said not spicy on everything I ordered and I swear it was all extra spicy. Oh well. I won’t be back that’s for sure!
Asked the waiter to confirm that the chips were fried in a dedicated GF fryer and was told they were 100% safe for celiacs. We were very clear that the order was for a severe allergy, however, my wife became extremely sick minutes after taking her first bite. We will never be returning to this restaurant, and would highly recommend that anyone suffering from a severe allergy stay clear.
I went to Bar taco with high hopes because I ate there before being diagnosed 3 years ago and I remember them having a gluten free menu. But here are some friendly tips for those with celiac. The fried fish, the ribeye taco is not gluten free. 100%. However the other tacos definitely are. The server informed me that the tortilla chips are made in a separate fryer. I had the pork tacos and I had the lobster taco with the corn and guac. I'd ask about the plantains! I wasn't sure so I didn't order. Besides that I didn't have a reaction, typical if I've been glutened I have one in 2 hours or less. But everything was fine. Def ask the server per location but for the most part 80% of the menu was gluten free ! Highly recommended
Went for brunch yesterday. The guy said all of the tacos are GF but there were clearly tacos that weren’t like a fried fish taco. Didn’t give me much confidence. Ordered the rib-eye and pork belly tacos. Today I definitely can tell I had gluten. Looked up on their website today and they do have an allergens portion. Turns out the rib-eye was not.
Cool place. Great margarita. Almost everything is gf and servers know it. Ordering and payment via QR code on table.
I had to ask twice if the battered and deep fried oyster taco and fish taco were gf. Both times the server confirms gf (they tasted great- I’ll amend the review if symptoms of exposure develop).
Overall great experience. Highly recommend
I ordered to go. I order the duck roasted tacos, they didn’t come as advertised they were supposed to come with caramelized onions which I love. I didn’t get that I got raw onions. Also my duck was spicy, I ordered it because it was one of the ones on the menu that wasn’t. I now have a burning mouth and have basically wasted money. Mom got the Baja fish and wasn’t happy either.
Food is great and safe but the atmosphere was painful, and I don't recommend taking children or anyone sensitive to loud noises here. They blast super loud music and the priority is drinks, not the food which is ordered a la carte.
You use an app to order the food and there are no waiters. This made things like asking for cheese for my daughter's taco weird, because you flag down the hostess who seated you with a little cards. No one will check on you or make rounds like a normal restaurant. Water was scarce and they give you a tiny pitcher for tiny glasses. Again, they want you to order drinks and little tacos for a couple hours.
The tacos were yummy and you can get corn tortillas or a lettuce wrap.
The food was delicious and the manager couldn’t be nicer when I explained that I have celiac. He not only told me that the menu is 90% GF but proceeded to quadruple check about a food I wanted to eat that he wasn’t sure about! I felt totally safe eating here and can’t wait to come back :)
The ability to order on the app and add your allergies is fantastic. The fact that everything is gluten-free, except for their desserts and kids’ meals are amazing!!
Awesome experience. I will keep on coming back.
Bartaco continues to be reliable! I’ve eaten at the chain in a handful of different states, and I’ve never had a problem. They make it easy to flag your order as a gluten allergy when you order online. Atlanta has 3 locations, and I would trust any of them. I love the taco packs for sharing! Just wish they would make crema and cotija available as add-ons. Also, just an FYI that have a full spreadsheet of allergens and cross contamination risks on their website, but you have to search for it!
Unusual experience in that you have no waitress but there is a wait team that brings your items to the table… which as a celiac makes me uncomfortable becuase I like to know I have one specific server that’s looking out for me. However, I was reasonably confident that the food was GF because the my said the entire menu was GF other than desserts and the “special” taco. They also have a clear selection when ordering for listing gluten allergy and notes. The food and cocktails were really good.
As someone with Celiac that lives in a rural area, I rarely get to go out to eat. My husband and I stopped in Bartaco on our last trip to Atlanta, and it was fantastic. I felt like the staff was very knowledgeable about gluten and the food was excellent. I sampled a variety of tacos and had a fabulous spicy margarita. Upon learning that it was our first visit, one of the hostesses even brought us complimentary duck tacos to sample. I would definitely go back and recommend to friends.
Almost everything (minus some of the desserts) is gluten free. What has gluten is marked on the menu. Ordering takes place online and there is a spot on your order to mark if you have a gluten allergy. Everyone was super friendly and the atmosphere was great. I highly recommend the Baja fish tacos.
So much of the menu is gluten free that they mark the few items that are *not* safe! For reference, my partner is extremely sensitive to cross contamination so we have to be extra picky. We visited the Inman Park location.
On the downside, the bar was uncomfortably crowded for Covid with the tables right next to each other. While the staff are wearing masks, I didn't see a single patron with one, even before being seated. So even outside I was a little uncomfortable with the risk. The place was also super loud, but the music was good. They've gone completely paperless so you sit, scan the table's barcode, and then open their app. You place your order in the app, marking each item with allergens as needed (gluten, dairy, nuts, shellfish, etc) and even pay through the app at the end of the meal, so contact with staff is minimal (an introvert's dream! 🤣).
The guacamole wasn't very good at all. Way too much lime and salt, no tomato, and it seemed at least partially made with Florida avocados because it was super bland beyond just hot salty and sour. Not worth the money. But the TACOS...oh the tacos were a different story. They're small, so if you're used to eating three tacos, you'll want about five of these. And they are SO GOOD.
I had the chicken verde, which wasn't that spicy but had a great smoky grill flavor. The duck was my least favorite, as it was oily and a little bland, but tender. The ribeye was good. The crispy oysters were my absolute favorite, just lovely and tender. My partner liked the mushroom tacos best, followed by the oyster.
Overall we were very impressed and plan to make this place a regular visit whenever we're in Atlanta. While the tacos are small, the rice bowls look like they're a good sized meal, and might be better value for money if you're on a budget.
LOVE bartaco but celiacs beware:
-They cook the corn tortillas on the same surface as flour so I always opt for lettuce wraps
-They claim the mojo pork is cooked with gluten free beer HOWEVER it’s omission beer which is currently *crafted to removed gluten* so not 100% gf
-chips currently fried in safe fryer but double check-may vary on the day
I’ve eaten here several times and been fine and I’m extremely sensitive
My server was very knowledgeable about what I could eat that was both GF and DF. I had many more options than I'm used to having. The manager stopped by to ensure I was having a good experience. Very impressed! I'll drive the 45 minutes to eat here again.
Really fantastic. Server was knowledgeable and passed along information about my celiac to the kitchen. Nearly all the menu is GF outside of desserts and the kids menu, and GF fryers are dedicated. Pork belly, chorizo, and duck tacos were all amazing. Even got 2 free taco tokens at the end for submitting a survey.
Will definitely revisit this or one of the other locations.
Food has always been great here. While most of the food is gluten free, there's still some items that contain it being prepared in the same kitchen so be careful to note on your items that you have a reaction to gluten. Staff is very knowledgeable with gluten intolerances.
Bartaco never disappoints from a safety standpoint. The online ordering system lets you check off a gluten allergy. The portions are VERY small, but the price is reasonable. Prepare to get at least three tacos and a side to fill you up. Overall a great place with a good vibe in Bucktown.
