I am very sorry to be the first person to post a negative review here. I went in a week ago and I am still dealing with the resulting sickness. When I placed my order, I could see all the buns laying on the grill. I noted that I was a Celiac and that I couldn't have any cross contamination. The cashier immediately seemed very knowledgeable, and we discussed all their safe-food handling processes. He explained that the GF buns occupied a different surface than regular buns, and that the fryer was only used for GF items and was cleaned regularly. He told me that if there was a [noticed] cross-contamination event with the fryer, everyone was notified, and they would try to prevent people with gluten allergies from ordering fried items. So I ordered a burger & fries. The receipt clearly stated "Gluten allergy" on it. When my order was ready, the person who gave me my food reassured me by stating that he personally watched the food prep and they did all they could to avoid contamination. I specifically asked if the bun was GF, and he said yes. I believe him since it looked different than my friend's "regular" bun. The food was great. But, sure enough, shortly after I finished, all the usual symptoms came on. So I'm sorry to ruin a good thing, but despite what seemed like good precautions and care, this place made me quite ill, so it isn't safe for Celiacs.

They have a dedicated gluten free fryer and were able to serve me delicious sweet potato fries and fried Brussels sprouts! Not really enough options for a full gluten free meal but they can certainly offer some wonderful treats!!

They have a dedicated frier! I just had fries, so I can't speak to burgers, but they were delicious, crispy, and didn't make me sick!

Spoke to a very knowledgeable manager who informed me that the kitchen space is cleaned for a GF order. I have celiac and ate there without any reaction. It was a treat to have the fries and the fried brussel sprouts!

Staff understands and will mark ticket as allergy for those of us with Celiac (yes, I know it’s not an allergy.) Gluten free burger bun and lettuce wraps available. Fries are cooked in dedicated fryer so FINALLY we can eat French fries! Highly recommend.

This used to be my second favorite place in the city for burgers. When I ordered tonight, they said that they were out of gluten free buns. This was super disappointing because being able to get a bun is 90% of the reason I come here. Then they had no substitute for the secret sauce. I guess that’s okay. When I asked for garlic fries, they said that the fries had changed and they are no longer gluten free. Overall, super disappointing meal because I thought I would get way more. I’ll just go to Roam instead whenever I want a burger even though it’s farther away.

Great food. They have a dedicated fryer and delicious gluten free buns. They mark your food as a gluten allergy when you order. I'm a celiac and eat here quite often and have never had any issues. Recommend!!

I grew up in St. Helena and ate Gotts three times a week before I got diagnosed. After getting diagnosed with Celiac Disease, I was told I could still eat safely at Gotts. First, they do have gluten free burger buns so you can get a burger. The secret sauce is NOT gluten free and they do LIE about having a dedicated fryer. They have two fryers, one for gluten and one gluten free, but when it gets busy they use the gluten free fryer and that’s why they say it’s “not working right now”. But the burgers are good and they have wonderful milkshakes, just do not eat the french fries.

Front register staff are very knowledgeable about what is GF. Unfortunately, the kitchen staff does not know how to prepare GF food safely. I caught the woman cooking my bun on top of crumbs from previous gluten containing buns. I went to the counter and asked if someone could prepare my buns without cross contamination. I was told they were already doing that..obviously not the case! Anyways, I still got sick after them re-doing the buns. I would not recommend this place!!

Gluten free buns available for $1 upcharge. GF fries and other sides are fried in separate GF fryer. Every time I have gone here they ask if GF is a preference or allergy and mark the items in the order with allergy, and will remove any sauces from the burger I order if they contain gluten.

Staff was very familiar with which items are gluten free, and they have gluten free hamburger buns. They also have a separate gluten free fryer, but it wasn't working today.

The staff was amazing! They were professional and kind. They have a dedicated gluten free fryer and my meal was served separately from my friends' meals with a gluten free sticker on it. When I had questions, the staff member who took my order had the recipe in front of her and she checked the ingredients for me. The Texas Burger and garlic fries were fabulous!

The staff was very knowledgeable. As soon as I requested a gluten free bun the lady at the cash register asked if it was an allergy or preference. When I said it’s an allergy, she advised me to remove the sauce and sub with a different kind because it contained gluten. Also made sure my fries were made in their “gluten free” fryer. No issues here and loved my meal!

I spoke with the manager here and felt very confident about their procedures in handling gluten/allergens. They assured me they have a dedicated fryer and a staff member to watch over the allergy orders. However, at our first visit, my highly sensitive daughter with celiac had a cheeseburger with a GF bun and French fries and ended up throwing up within the hour. Something must have been contaminated. Sad because I had a lot of confidence in them!

My husband is celiac and he ordered the GF bacon cheeseburger. The fries are made in a separate fryer. He tested them with the Gluten tester Nima and came back gluten free. It's such a joy to find places like this!

I got glutened. My own fault. They are very supportive of Celiacs but you have to go the extra mile and ask for a manager to follow your meal as it is made. I didn't ask for that. They marked my order as gluten allergy but according to a rep of the restaurant that isn't enough. Risk of cross contamination still exists and getting a manager to oversee meal prep is advised. Gluten free burger bun though is quite delicious.

Gotts is a great option for celiacs. Delicious burgers offered via lettuce wrap or gluten free bun (extra charge). French fries are done in a separate fryer so they are safe. The food is delicious and the staff was knowledgeable! Fun atmosphere!

Check to make sure gf dryer is working before ordering fries. Gf bun was the BEST gf bun I've ever had. Amazing food. Careful, the ranch has bleu cheese.

I'll update my review a few hours after I eat. When we ordered they said the safest thing to order is the burger. They tell the line it's a gluten allergy so they are extra careful and clean it down. They have gluten free buns. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger, had to switch out the cheese because American cheese has gluten in it but the Swiss cheese is gluten free, also no secret sauce as it also has gluten. They have a dedicated fryer for the fries and the ketchup is sir Kensington's which is certified gluten free.

Great bacon cheeseburger (no special sauce). But they warned me that at 5pm they can't guarantee that something hasn't contaminated their "dedicated" dryer. Appreciated the honesty but was a disappointment!!

My husband and I ate here. He has Celiac. We recently purchased a Nima gluten tester and used it. The french fries, garlic fries and cheese burger protein style all tested Gluten free! We will be coming back in the future.

I ordered a burger with a gluten free bun. The staff was knowledgeable and asked if it was a choice or an allergy and let me know that they would need to leave off the secret sauce since it was an allergy. The bun was great - soft and springy almost like standard bread. Dedicated fryers for french fries. Would definitely come again if I lived in SF.

As soon as I asked for a gf bun, they asked me if I was allergic or it was just a choice. When I asked about the fries, they told me sometimes they have a dedicated fryer and sometimes they don't, so you always have to ask. They were serious about it and kind. The buns were of the so-good-I-worry-they-aren't-actually-gf sort. I get the skin rash, so I know I wasn't even cross contaminated. I highly recommend this restaurant.
