Extremely educated staff. Usually feel uncomfortable dining out during peak hours but I went on a Saturday at 7:00 pm and still received the best service. Simply told the waitress I had celiac and she showed me the special ‘celiac menu’. The manager brought out my food first & separately from the gluten meals ordered by others in my party. Amazing experience!
Ask for the grilled chips to start
They have a separate gluten free menu and seemed to take my celiac disease very seriously. However, because the fryer isn’t safe, you can’t get anything fried. I did order their gluten free chips and guacamole but it turned out to be soft, warm tortilla strips and guacamole. Very strange and I would not recommend.
I did like my quesadilla though.
GLUTEN FREE PATRONs be careful! We have two members of our family that are celiac. We sat down and waiter touted how they have a single chef that does all gluten free options and they take gluten free serious. Which really impressed us and made the table feel at ease as people who have celiac are constantly fighting to find true gluten free food. Well we were wrong… they served one in our party a gluten free chicken quesadilla correctly and myself two regular tacos. They then served my wife who is celiac her “gluten free” chicken fajitas. Well after taking several bites and then comparing my taco tortillas and her dad’s quesadilla tortillas she thought something was off. She stoped eating and waited for the waiter to come back to confirm she was in fact given corn tortillas and not flour. Well she was right…. They also gave her the wrong rice which had gluten in it too. They took it away and exchanged it for the white rice and correct corn tortillas without saying sorry. They tried to pass it off as nothing happened which frustrated my wife as she had already eaten a bunch of the meal. I rarely write reviews, but this establishment should not claim to take gluten free serious with a single chef that handles gluten free meals because this WOULDNT have happened if it was true. So I advise anyone coming here to double check their meal. Now my wife has been sick all nite. they should give us a full refund!
WOW!! I was diagnosed a year ago so I have not had that many experiences dining out but I have not yet had an experience as amazing as this one. It took such a load off of my shoulders when they asked if we have any allergies before I had to bring it up and then immediately understood what celiac disease is and took it seriously. They have a separate celiac menu which is limited, but very appreciated! The tacos were delicious! They had the manager come out and explain their measures to prevent cross contact. I felt so safe and welcome 🥹 It was a fantastic first dinner of my trip to San Diego!
The gluten-free menu is indeed small, but they really go out of their way to serve gluten-free patrons safely. I was truly impressed by all of their procedures -- a dedicated gluten-free menu, having a manager take the gluten-free orders, and confirming that the food that comes out is correctly gluten-free. The prices were surprisingly reasonable considering the busy downtown location. Plenty of outdoor seating was available when I visited. It can be difficult to find parking in this neighborhood so be sure to allow time for that.
Separate Celiac menu - it was limited, but there was enough variety to choose from. This made me confident that they understand what gluten free really is! Waiter was knowledgeable, explained the precautions they take & answered all my questions. The manager checked in to see what I ordered, checked the kitchen & personally delivered my food. I had a mahi mahi fish taco and a chicken quesadilla. Both were delicious & the quesadilla was so large I couldn’t finish it all. Good margarita too! Would definitely go back. No reaction at all 😀
Super friendly, lovely manager, felt very safe, they understood coeliac
Food was a bit bland though, and odd for me coming from the U.K. the menu didn’t have prices, maybe this is normal in the USA?
Would defiantly eat here again but would try other options looking for something with a bit more taste, for context I don’t like very hot food, so if I found it bland 😂
They take safety very seriously but unfortunately it comes at the cost of taste. We had fajitas and they were extremely bland. They make their own baked tortilla chips from tortillas that were also not very good.
Safety too notch but I wouldn’t recommend unless highly sensitive
Be careful eating here. I was given the wheat containing version of the dish I ordered, after being very clear I have celiac. I explained having celiac to our waitress, and she assured me that there is no cross contact. I even confirmed after I was given my dish that it was gluten free. After I was nearly finished eating, the manager came up apologizing, said I was given a wheat sauce, and said that the waitress had not informed him that my order was gluten free. It seems like many people have a great experience eating here, but I certainly didn’t and will be sick for a while.
Had a WONDERFUL experience here! One of the only places I've gone for the first time and felt completely safe eating there. When I told our server I had celiac and was quite sensitive to cross-contamination, the manager came out and explained that they have a completely separate prep and cook area for their GF menu (tortilla presses, grill, etc.). No cross-contact whatsoever! I ordered their a la carte tacos (chicken, shrimp, and fish) and they were all pretty tasty! My favorite was the chicken. My gluten-eating husband had a cali burrito that he said was good, but not great.
Super sensitive celiac - They have a limited menu, but I really enjoyed the steak fajitas- I would rather have a limited menu that is done properly than an expansive menu that makes me sick! The margaritas are equally as yummy! I ordered the gauc app as well...they do not have a dedicated frier so baked "chip" were provided and not my fav. I was thankful I had stached a few tortilla chips in my purse to use instead. Overall, I really enjoyed the experience, did not get sick and they were very reponsive when I requested the gf menu and stated that I was celiac!
My experience was very much the same as everyone else’s. They took very great precautions to make sure that my food was handled safely. With all that they do with their communication I was just slightly disappointed that they don’t provide proper chips. A pan fried corn tortilla is OK but it’s not a replacement for a crispy chip. I wish they had a dedicated frier. So many more dishes could be made safely to give a little bit more variety to their menu.
The host wowed us! He told us the Waiter was on "gluten free probation", so only the experienced host would be taking our order. Once he handed our order to the chef, only the head chef would touch our meal. He explained what substitutions would be made so there was no question about what we were getting. This felt like one of the safest meals I've ever had at a restaurant. We shared a plate of Carne Asada fajitas and they were absolutely amazing! But on top of that, I appreciated that the host came back and told us that the chef reviewed our order and promised to take care of us! I will be going back and trying a couple other menu items while we are here in town!!
Ate here 3 times on our trip. Drinks were good and they have a gluten free menu. It’s limited, but, has everything you’d want for a great lunch or dinner. I must say, the staff is very knowledgeable about Celiac issues and they seem to take great pride in their gluten precautions. The portions are huge, two tacos and a margarita made for a great meal.
AMAZING experience. Not only did the waiter make sure to take my equal eats card, but the manager came over and broke everything down. He listed every way possible that cross contamination could happen but also was VERY clear o their specific protocols for celiacs. I felt so incredibly safe and supported. Not only was the service incredible, but the food!!! We had tacos (steak, fish, carnitas), steak quesadillas and shrimp fajitas. My husband ordered off the celiac menu and was so impressed as well. There was zero disappointment in flavor. I will patron this place over and over again! Thank you so much for the support
It’s a relief to go somewhere where they know about celiac. While the menu isn’t extensive, it’s varied enough that I didn’t eat the one GF item they have. The GF guac and chips were a standout.
If you’re dairy free too, make sure to ask for a replacement for the crema. Otherwise the tacos are dry.
The staff went above and beyond to ensure the food and drinks I were served were gluten free. The tortilla chips were done on the stove stop so they weren’t super crispy but they were at least gluten free! I got the stuffed Chile Relleno and it was amazing. The margaritas were great too.
When I explained that I was celiac and asked if the restaurant was familiar with celiac disease my waitress told me management takes it very seriously and has a separate cooking space for celiac/gluten free food to avoid cross contamination. They don’t have a celiac safe fryer but the shrimp tacos I had were delicious! I felt very safe and the food was delicious.
This restaurant's claim of having a celiac-friendly menu is nothing but a cruel joke. My friend, who has celiac disease, suffered a severe reaction after dining here. The owner's response was appalling – more concerned about avoiding a lawsuit than the well-being of a customer.
Not only did they provide minimal assistance, offering just one charcoal pill (a red flag in itself that they had them on hand), but the owner displayed an arrogant and dismissive attitude throughout the ordeal. There was no apology, just a blatant disregard for our concerns. To make matters worse, they even had the audacity to bring out a waiver for us to sign!
This experience was not only dangerous but deeply disappointing. It's imperative to steer clear of this establishment if you care about your health and expect even basic levels of customer service and empathy. Your safety and satisfaction are clearly not a priority here.
