WOW! 1) DELICIOUS GF FOOD. 2) celiac friendly! They have allergen trained people for celiacs and shellfish! 3) amazing service. The waiter told us that during their interviews, if they were not knowledgeable or messed up on an allergy inquiry they are not even hired.
Reviews can be wrong but NOT for this place. This place is Wonderful, Amazing, Tasty, and worth the cost of the meal. My wife and I went here tonight for dinner after I read just about every review on the app. I have celiac and she does not. I’m also a Type 1 Diabetic. We got an Appetizer of Buffalo Popcorn Shrimp. She had the grilled Snapper and I had the Deep Fried Shrimp at the waiters’ recommendation. They let me sub the Polenta for the Coleslaw (no charge) and brought two GF rolls (amazing) at no extra charge. By far the Best meal we have had in DC. It was all wonderful and the Manager delivered every dish that had to be GF. HIGHLY recommend this place and Brian as a waiter. As a side note, I’ve seen some reviews complain about price. For two of us we paid $78 for all our food and drinks and that’s a bargain if you ask me (and we’re from the Midwest). We’ll definitely be returning.
We have been in Boston and now in Washington and you feel really safe for celiac. My wife was really happy to have a good and real gluten free beer (brew with GF grains not removed). The food was awesome and staff is really knowledgeable. Great time with party of 9.
Food was amazing. Best gluten free rolls that were baked when ordered. Several gf fried options as the breading is rice based. Fried shrimp amazing! Our waiter was extremely knowledgeable. A manager delivered my food and said careful attention was made for my food allergy. Love this place!
Took my celiac daughter here and she had a great dinner. We were so surprised when they brought just-baked gluten free rolls to the table - - she was in heaven! She had grilled scallops with the garlic/leek brown rice and spinach and did not get sick.
Make this a priority when visiting DC! This place is so effing good! A woman certified in gf food cam out and delivered our food and assured us the entire kitchen staff was very aware and making accommodations based on my allergy. I had fish and chips. This is not a a joke, I had the most delicious fish and chips ever. I still can’t believe it was gf and that amazing. If you don’t go here you are an idiot. For real.
Not symptomatic so I can't speak to safety other than how reassured I felt. The person I spoke to on the phone was not very helpful, seemed to be guessing what was gluten free. Once I spoke to the manager I felt much better. I was relieved to hear there was a separate fryer. I did a take out order and when I walked in, I asked for the manager, Richard, who I had spoken to on the phone. He was very nice and very reassuring that he would keep my little boy safe. The fries were good.
5 minutes after sitting down, my celiac daughter ate a gluten roll that the waitress brought to our table. This was after explaining we had celiac and her promising us GF rolls. She only ate one bite but only because I looked at the next table and realized they had the same rolls. The waitress (and manager) said “Oops. Sorry”. We did not eat there and wouldn’t recommend any other celiac eating their either.
Menu is clearly marked w/ what items are or can be made gluten free. They use a corn mixture for frying instead of regular flour which was a nice surprise. Unfortunately our waiter was very arrogant and condescending to our questions about cross contamination and ensuring my meal was safe. The food was tasty (gf rolls were excellent!) Chowder was delicious - tasted just like clam chowder but w/ the consistency of a noodle soup almost. Fried fish platter was also very good and crispy. Nima tested the bread to ensure it was safe and it passed. Ate and did not get sick - unfortunately the waiter’s overall attitude put a damper on the experience. Would definitely return but request another service. Overall, excellent food and it’s safe.
Our waiter had gone through specific training to accommodate to our needs. My food was phenomenal and I can't remember a time when I have eaten a gluten free clam chowder and a gluten free fried shrimp. Overall, this is a great place, and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a good place to eat!
Excellent choice for dinner!! Our waiter helped with our GF and DF questions. The only "mess-up" came when we realized that my husband could have requested egg wash prior to frying as opposed to a buttermilk wash. He had the Fisherman's Platter. He was very pleased with the taste!! I had the char-grilled snapper with broccoli and rice which covered my GF and DF needs. The GF rolls are also DF which we had with olive oil brought to the table as opposed to butter. When I asked if the rolls were made in house, they said no, but they wrote down the name of the company from which they were ordered. The rolls are made specifically for the restaurant, but I look forward to checking out the website for other GF possibilities. We will definitely return when back in DC!!!
They were great! The manager brought out my food, showed me the ticket, which was marked celiac, and assured they took all the right measures to keep me safe and I felt fine after eating a salad and mussels. The restaurant trains staff in celiac and cross contamination and started a gluten free/celiac friendly food program on in 2005. I'm amazed and pleasantly surprised
Whenever I am in DC or Boston, I must go to Legal Seafoods! I have Celiac Disease and they are very careful. Their warm gluten free rolls are delicious. Even my gluten eating friends were surprised by how good they were. One time in DC I had fried oysters. Oh my goodness! After my diagnosis, I didn't think I would ever be able to have fried oysters again. I was thrilled. I thought they were delicious.
Love love love!!! Lots of great options, me and my mom swear by this place. I am allergic to dairy and gluten so eating out at a place I can enjoy safely can be fairly daunting. I let them know and they told me if they could do certain dishes. Gluten free dishes are clearly marked with a little leaf. I cannot eat the fried foods as the batter has dairy, but i can appreciate gluten free fried food even if I can't eat it! I had the snapper verde with fries and spinach and it was AMAZING. Food is pricey so be mindful, but if you can swing it then it is very worth it!
Wow!! That's all I have to say. It is by far the best seafood I have ever had. I actually over ate, I liked it that much!!!!! The service was amazing our waiters were friendly and the manager brought out our gf food. What a meal by far the best gluten free food in Washington D.C. GF dinner so far!!!🍤With gluten free fried shrimp. Yum Yum!!!!🍽🍤🍤Lots of options.
Outstanding food and service. My waitress asked if I had any allergies right after we were seated and wrote down celiac-gluten allergy. She alerted the chef and other waitstaff. I was offered GF rolls which were delicious and all of my food was delivered by the manager as a precaution. I had an outstanding experience and will be back (hopefully soon)! Note: The restaurant has a large amount of GF items that sound delicious. I had the baked haddock and it was outstanding. Portion sizes are off the charts and well worth the price.
I have missed fried fish! Legal Seafood claims gluten free breading and dedicated fryers. They have GF dinner rolls that were quite good. Our waiter was knowledgeable and explained that the manager would deliver my meal to the table. He said that is their policy when there are food allergies so the manager can verify that the food was prepared correctly. I wish this restaurant was near my home.
Excellent! ! Very knowledgeable and caring staff. They have dedicated fryers so you can have fried fish here and fries but the onion straws are amazing! All of it was light and crispy. They also serve you gf bread rolls before your meal so you aren't left out watching non celiacs enjoy their bread. The portions are large too and the price is good. I would definitely go back and highly recommend to anyone needing a gf diet.
Lots of gluten-free options. There was a little miscommunication between my waiter and the chef, but the manager went out of his way to make it right for me. Gluten-free protocols are clearly in place. I visited in Nov. 2015. Read my full review over on the blog: http://www.eatingoutwithout.com/2015/11/legal-sea-foods-review.html
Celiac safe! We went here twice in Boston. Items that can be made gluten free are marked on the menu. Restaurant seems to have adequate allergy protocols because neither my partner nor I got sick! Everything fried is gluten free (they use cornstarch instead of flour). We tried the calamari, crab legs and sides, surf and turf with sides, and lobster roll. The lobster roll is really just butter poached lobster with the option of their gluten free bread rolls to make it yourself. The lobster is perfectly tasty on its own! The gluten free bread rolls are mediocre. Good service and good food, definitely recommend for Celiac's folx!
I was nervous to try a restaurant in an airport before boarding a flight but manager came out and assured me of the procedures and also personally delivered my food. They use chickpea flour so all fried foods are safe. Was a treat to have French fries!
The staff was very accommodating. Lemine was very attentive and was great. Peter, the manager came to our table and assured me that there was no cross contamination. We received excellent service and food was amazing.
Best GF pickle chips I’ve ever had! The GF buns at this location are mini and kind of hard so not the best. I was with 2 friends and all 3 of us ordered the fried fish sandwich (2 gf, 1 regular). They brought the 2 GF ones out and said these are the GF ones and then brought the regular one. All 3 buns looked exactly the same and the GF buns did not look GF to me. Our server took them away and we were brought new GF sandwiches - our server did not bring the food out and also recognized that the buns were not GF. While we waited a manager came over and assured us that she had spoken with the kitchen staff (read yelled) and apologized profusely for non GF dishes being brought out and presented as GF. She also brought us 2 complimentary GF desserts. I was very impressed by the quick response to non GF food being brought out, however, had I not noticed that the buns were not GF and I would have eaten them and gotten sick. (I did not get sick so the replacements were GF) would go back again but double check that everything that comes out is in fact GF.
This was our first time to any Legal Seafood, and we selected it while traveling in Boston specifically because of its celiac-friendly reputation. We. Were. Not. Disappointed. Everything, from our waiter’s well-versed understanding of our gluten-free concerns, which immediately put us at ease, and the number of gluten free options on the menu (literally ALL of the fried fish is gluten free, plus there were many other choices available), to the quality of the food, were AMAZING! The regular non-gluten-free New England clam chowder was the best I’ve ever had (so your non-celiac dining companions should def try it) and my husband’s brothy gluten-free light chowder was delicious, as well. Grilled shrimp with jalapeño polenta and kale salad, fried calamari with hot peppers, and fried whole belly clams were excellent. They even brought gluten free dinner rolls. The best part was how comfortable we felt knowing they truly understood my husband’s dietary needs so we were completely relaxed, which is rare for a celiac dining out. Only downside? Ice cream was the only gluten-free dessert on the menu. Not complaining, though. Can’t recommend this place highly enough!
The staff was very accommodating. Legal Seafood offers many items gluten free. We tried the beer battered cod with fries & fried shrimp with fried rice. This place is AMAZING! The manager & waiter was very cautious & made me feel great about eating here without worrying about being sick.
Fantastic GF fried shrimp and fries made in a dedicated fryer!
I can’t even begin to explain what a treat this place is. I was only in Philadelphia for one night and I got take out when I landed and again before I took off. I can go here and actually feel like a normal person. They put the finishing touch on it by having the manager come out to make sure the food is gluten-free.
I’ve eaten the fried food at many other locations. I got very sick after eating here. They also brought all the food - raw bar, appetizers, entrees out at once which makes the experience significantly worse.
Everything they fry is gluten free because their fryer is all gluten free. Great fried calamari. They have gf rolls if you ask for them. Knowledgeable staff. A very safe place and experience for those with celiac. I have never gotten sick.
Very knowledgeable staff, great options, and the fryer is dedicated to chickpea flour for all orders. Drink options are very good as well. Manager always delivers the gluten free meal to the table to ensure confidence.
This is probably one of the best places to eat gluten free, along with 110 Grill. I’ve eating here many times, every time something different, and have never gotten sick. The staff is really knowledgeable and they even bring you gf bread, which is pretty good. The only thing I didn’t like was the clam chowder—only the lite one is gluten free and it’s not good. Hopefully, they’ll make the regular one gf in the future.
The waiter took my order and then the general manager came out to reassure me that my meal would be prepared safely. I had the fried shrimp and french fries. Delicious and I didn’t get sick!
I was so happy with my meal here. I just got the fish and chips (which I’ve never had before but always wanted to try) and it was amazing how normal the breading tasted. I haven’t had any good fried food since finding out I was celiacs (not even a decent chicken finger) so this just blew me out of the park that I found something after all this time.
If you are at the Philadelphia airport, this place is a gem. The chef came out to confirm my allergies (which also includes dairy) and reassured me that the food would be safe. He delivered it personally. I enjoyed a tasty egg, bacon and home fries breakfast with gf rolls. Delicious and, best of all, no adverse reaction!
First day of our vacation... was promised my 9 year old meal was GF safe... she vomited all the way from Boston to Reykjavik... they DON’T get it and lied about the fact that they did. My poor child is still sick 6 hours later. Furious. Caution or avoid altogether. 0 stars, but in order to post I need to click a damn star apparently 😡
I was thrilled when the waitress told me all their batter fried foods had a gluten free coating, so I had fried shrimp that was so yummy!! I had not been able to eat batter-fried shrimp for so many years, and it was wonderful!!
Legal Seafoods tend to be good with allergies most of the time however this location gave me sweet potatoes spiced with ghost pepper after I told them I cannot do any peppers. Did not have a gluten reaction though, just a problem with the peppers.
Great food & knowledgeable staff! Their fried calamari is delicious! They have dedicated friers & GF dredge for fried foods (calamari, fish & chips, fried oysters). The seafood casserole is amazing too! They even have GF rolls too! You have to ask for them but they’re so fluffy & flavorful!
Second time here and they have lots of options, and the food is amazing!
Large selection of options and... wow! Yummy! When we told the server about my daughter’s “gluten allergy” (we know it’s not an allergy, but it is a means to an end in some situations...).. WOW!.. manager came out to discuss and highlight measures taken to protect her and then when it was served to us the other server explained the extent of care to eliminate the possibility of cross contamination. AMAZING!
Lots of options including sandwiches and fried foods. Fish and chips are good - they use chickpea flour which comes across as more of a cornmeal-like texture rather than a batter. Good, but I’ve got gf fish and chips in my city that is more traditional that I prefer. However, I felt very safe - staff was knowledgeable and when food was delivered they let me know they took extra precautions.
Harborside restaurant...Extensive gluten free menu options. The waiter was very accommodating and asked in the kitchen when he was unsure about anything. Separate allergy food handler delivered the food to my son with Celiac. He was able to have a lobster roll and loved it!
Great food! I had the oyster po boy on lettuce (no bread offered) with French fries and slaw. Didn’t love the slaw but the fries were good. Manager brings out food announcing allergy. Didn’t get sick after! Also, everything that goes into the fryer is gluten free so no worries about cross contamination.
Almost all of their food could be made gluten free...including fried food and fries!!!! The staff was very knowledgeable and if they weren’t sure, they would ask instead of just guessing. Definitely returning!
The absolute best fish and chips I’ve ever had, gluten free or otherwise. Tasted almost too good to be true!
Nice to have a breakfast option at an airport. The staff were very knowledgeable about celiac and took it seriously. I had eggs, bacon, and home fries- assured me the frier didn’t have any gluten exposure. The one bummer was they no longer serve any GF toast.
I don't know which location we ate at at the airport but I was assured my meal was 100% gluten free. I even asked about the fries in a designated fryer told the server I have an allergy she assured me I was going to be fine I threw up three times before having to board a plane. I do not recommend this restaurant and I think it's really sad that these restaurants assure you you're fine and really have no idea what you go through if you get sick.
Years ago when fried foods actually had a place in my diet, I had visited other Legal Sea Foods locations and had an okay experience from what I can remember. As a way to close out my wonderful trip to DC, I said “hey, you haven’t had fried fish in about 2 years, why not?” Find me gluten free showed positive notes from other travelers, so I made the decision to try. I ordered the Fish & Chips that came with a side of slaw and house made tartar sauce that they say is GF. I mentioned I had celiac/an allergy and was assured they knew how to handle GF. A manager even brought out the food and confirmed it was prepared GF. I didn’t have any NIMA capsules left, but I proceeded anyway. The food tasted great!...But within an hour of finishing the meal I was keeled over in pain for the duration of my following 2 hour flight. This was without a doubt a glutening. While I don’t doubt they’ve taken great care in preparing GF fried seafood and meals on other occasions, that wasn’t the case today. I suspect that the tartar sauce or slaw is not GF. Lesson learned.
I get to the airport early just to make sure I have time to eat here. They're very attentive and also work with my dairy allergy. I Love Legal Seafood. I'm very sensitive to cross contamination and I've never had a problem here.
Fantastic food and great service. Menu is clearly marked with options. Told the waiter about my allergy and he sent the manager over who assured me that the food would not be cross contaminated. Will definitely be stopping by again.
Our server assured me everything was gluten-free, I even asked about the french fries being in a dedicated fryer and she said not to worry it's a hundred percent gluten-free you're fine. I've been throwing up at the airport for an hour with massive stomach pains!! Stay away from this place.
Absolutely amazing! They dont use wheat flour on anything here so the fryer is 100% gf. Everything but one item on the breakfast menu can be made gf and the regular lunch and dinner menu is huge! So so good and super safe.
I've eaten at the Lynnfield MA and Peabody MA restaurants and both have no clue what they are doing when it comes to gluten. Yesterday I was served a bowl of mussels with regular bread in it after specifically telling the waiter I had a gluten allergy and even made sure I ordered the gluten free mussels. He just looked at me like a deer caught in headlights when I asked him if the bread was gluten free. He said no but just don't eat the bread (the bread was physically in the bowl with the mussels and broth). There is only one waitress trained in gluten allergies at the Peabody restaurant. How do I know? Because she told my husband and I casually that she was the only staff member who had received their allergy training. I don't care if a restaurant doesn't offer GF options, I just wont eat there. But don't say your giving me something that your not. It's not for a cook or waiter to make decisions about my health. On top of it, food allergies or not, I think Legal Sea Foods is very inconsistent with their food/service quality (I guess it depends on who is working). If your in this area there are tons of seafood restaurants I wouldn't waste my money on this one.
Staff was super helpful. We had the lobster roll and calamari. There are multiple locations, so make sure you go to the one that has the gf lobster rolls and calamari if you want to enjoy. Full review is on my website, enmegfree.com.
An oasis in a gluten filled food court!
