GF labeled salad definitely made me sick. avoid.
It's a nice place and the staff try their best to accommodate but NOT SAFE FOR CELIACS.
super good gluten free bread for yummy sandwiches and plenty of salad options. Bustling eatery in a cute location. Recommended if you want to feel like a normal sandwich eater. :)
very disappointed, it is not gluten-free, they share all equipment with gluten containing foods.
One of the most delicious sandwiches I've ever eaten and creative flavorful salads. I ordered the Steak BLT sandwich and the Quinoa Beet salad. Both items were outstanding. I'll come back many times. They have many clearly marked GF items on menu and offer very good GF bread for the sandwiches. If you let them know you have celiac or an allergy, they handle your food with care and make it separately in GF zone.
Leaving a review to lower the rating as this site is supposed to be used to help people find safe restaurants...and this is 100% not one of them. The Mendocino chain is NOT CELIAC SAFE, and is GF only by Los Angeles fad-diet standards. Certainly doesn't deserve a 4-star rating on FMGF...
Their salads are quite good (and actually interesting compared to most sandwich places) and they take special note when I say I have a gluten allergy/celiac. Have eaten here a handful of times, never been sick.
So I had a sandwich on gluten free bread and the bread was toasted and tough. I tried to cut the bread with a plastic fork and it won’t cut the bread. I went inside and asked if someone could cut the sandwich and the answer was no. Apparently no one could go wash a knife. So I’m appreciative that they were trying to be gluten free, thank goodness I have all my teeth. I have five people standing around me trying to figure out how to cut a piece of bread, really! I just said give me the sandwich and I’ll deal with it. No management response and sandwich ultimately was good. However, WTF, I can’t cut your bread or re-do your sandwich.
The staff was accommodating with answering questions about ingredients for multiple food allergies, and they said they can mark gluten-free orders as an allergy and use separate gloves, knives, etc. I got the impossible burger on gluten-free bread (no gf bun). The bread was your standard gf packaged bread, but the burger was good and I didn’t have a reaction. I asked about the flourless chocolate cookie, and the person working at the counter said that while it doesn’t have gluten ingredients, it’s processed with the other ones and therefore not safe. Overall, I appreciated how knowledgeable and honest they were.
NOT CELIAC SAFE!! Staff is very honest about everything being made on the same surface!! Gluten cross contact is everything. Shared surfaces, utensils, ingredients. Not safe at all.
All salads are celiac safe and they do have gluten free bread/buns. When asking about food safety for celiac, the manager came out saying he already had the chef made aware of it. Overall, delicious, safe food. Definitely am going back and would recommend.
The salads here are amazing! If you are celiac I wouldn’t recommend getting the sandwiches because they don’t have a separate area or separate utensils but in terms of salads they have “gluten free” mixing bowls and utensils... I’ve never gotten sick from here and I highly recommend the modern ceasar no tortilla.
SANDWICHES ARE NOT CELIAC SAFE. It states this on their menu that they are made on the same equipment. However, I had good luck eating a Caesar salad and asking for a glove change. The salad was super yummy, I added chicken, and the dressing was really flavorful. Nice atmosphere and good service.
Been here twice since its opening a few days ago. Love that the menu is clearly marked gluten free and seasonal; sandwiches, salads, great outdoor seating and stellar customer service. Great addition to the Pruneyard!
I've spoken to a manager here and been told they prepare everything on shared equipment. There's even a sign stating that the GF options aren't free from cross contamination. I'd be very careful here if you have Celiac.
GF options are indicated on menu (substitute GF bread). Staff seems knowledgeable. Fast. Fresh. Had Vegan Banh Mi without lemonaise - tasty and crunchy. GF bread was ok - better as a small salad.
Used to eat here all the time and be fine. The last 4 times (over the course of several weeks) I ate a gluten free (allergy indicated) Italian Love Sandwich and I had a gluten reaction each time!!! Something has changed and I obviously cannot go back anymore. BEWARE!!!
Many GF salad options and they have GF bread as well. This particular location says that if you notify them you are ordering for an "allergy" they will assign one employee to make the order themselves (as opposed to the normal production line) in order to minimize risk of contamination. The kitchen is open and viewable as in all locations so you can see if they're doing it right. Worth mentioning the food here is really good!
Not celiac friendly. They take zero precautions for cross contamination. It's specifically stated that it's not safe for celiacs. So how they can label it as gluten free is silly. All these positive reviews are clearly by a bunch of people who have a made up allergy.
Maybe not celiac friendly, as they told me there could be some cross contamination. But for my wheat allergy, I don't notice this sort of thing. Very tasty GF sandwich and salad. I also sampled a GF chicken tortilla soup, which I hope to try another time. Friendly people too.
The sandwiches & salads here are so good! They use bread from Rising Hearts bakery (extra charge) & when you order gluten-free & specify that it's an allergy they change their gloves & such. The menu is clearly marked with what can be made gluten-free. It's the only place I ever order GF sandwiches from. So good.
Asked employee about CC issues when walked in, was assured they use separate panini presses for GF & wheat products. Placed order, then told by man behind counter, they use same press, wouldn't put anything in it to prevent CC, & showed us the statement on their menu stating they used shared equipment. Needless to say, we left. This is not Gluten Free, you can offer as many GF products as you want, but when you don't try to prevent CC, it's NOT Gluten Free.
Yum! Their gluten free bread is pretty good. Turkey club with avocado!! They have an allergy button that they push and the workers lay down a piece of paper and change their gloves to accommodate you. They usually have a gluten free soup too.
I got the gluten free tuna melt with no red onions. The bread was so tasty, with a sweet nutty flavor, and the veggies were fresh and colorful. The tuna melt was made with veganaise, so I didn't have to worry about my food, it was perfect. :)
Probably my favorite sandwich place ever! All their food is from local farms. Even their beer, soda and chips are fun brands that you don't see everywhere. Their sandwiches are unique and delicious and their gluten free bread is pretty good. Several gluten free sandwich items that are clearly marked and they're sensitive to allergies.
My favorite sandwich shop ever!!!! Gluten free bread, and sandwiches are clearly labeled as GF and/or VThey always ask whether it is an allergy or a preference because they will change gloves and preparation surface for safety if needed. My favorite sandwich is the Prosciutto and Free Range Chicken!!!
Superb sandwiches with a gluten free bread option. The many ingredients that are gluten free are marked as such. Mention that you have the allergy and someone will prepare it with new gloves, etc. to avoid cross contamination - never had a problem with that so far. Sometimes the gluten free sandwiches take a little longer - just call ahead and pick it up.
I actually loved the food but although they have a dedicated toaster for the gluten-free bread, they did not know about having a separate station for the sandwiches; my concern is with cc with the sauces and knives. However, after talking to the manager, they seemed open to improving. I'll follow up!
