Excellent experience. 3 of the 8 dinner guests were Celiac and we all left extremely happy. Our waiter (James) was extremely knowledgeable and took the time to make sure our meals were safe. No specific Gluten Free menu, but the our wait staff took the time to talk to each guest about the dishes we were interested in and the kitchen was willing to accommodate. The kitchen was able to prepare several of the menu items so that they were safe. The ribeye and chocolate soufflé were “the best” GF food we have had in a long time.
Ate here twice on my trip. first night the server was very thorough and knowledgeable but second waiter seemed less sure about what was safe. Was told to just pick a protein, a starch, and a vegetable and they could make whatever I wanted, mix and match the components of the menu items. Was then told that the short ribs (minus one sauce) and the butterfish were the easiest menu options to make gf. Food was delicious both times
Although the menu is pretty limited (zero appetizers are okay), my meal was safe and excellent.
They provide edamame to begin as a stand-in for bread that you might expect at some restaurants, which I tested with my Nima and was safe.
For dinner, I ordered the Hiramasa fish, which tested safe with my Nima and was absolutely delicious.
The chocolate souffle for desert is GF and was also excellent.
While it was a bit disappointing that the menu was pretty limited for a Celiac, the meal was one of the best I had in my full week in O’ahu.
This place is confusing. There are many things on the menu that are typically gluten free or could easily be made GF and yet very few options to eat, especially in seafood which is their specialty. Example: seafood paella. Typically GF! Not at Roy's, and can't be modified to be GF. The Seafood Treasures platter? Sounds like it could easily be GF. Nope. If you want it, you basically get a plain grilled scallop, 2 shrimp, and half a lobster tail. For like $58. Really?
The waiter did seem very knowledgeable about GF options and could quickly point out things that were good options--it's just the options seemed limited and modifications typically completely altered the dish so you were getting plain fish with some mashed potatoes.
I ended up having the honey mustard braised short ribs without the honey mustard sauce (again, why?) and substituted regular plain mashed potatoes for the cauliflower mash that was supposed to come with the dish (why isn't the cauliflower mash GF?) and it came with some sautéed veggies like squash and carrots and broccoli. It was fine. $50 fine? Nah.
My guess is most everything here is marinated in something that contains soy sauce and that's why they can't modify lots of things or the modifications result in such plain food options. It's really kind of a bummer because a lot of the food sounds amazing and seems like it could easily be GF if you just used some GF soy sauce or GF fish sauce which all taste exactly like their non-GF counterparts. But whatever
Dessert and drinks are another story. The cocktails are delicious. Also the chocolate souffle is GF! Go freaking figure. They can do a GF souffle but not paella? Bizarre. I had the Creme Brule which was good and the shortbread cookies come on the side.
My daughter had the edamame, Cesar salad, and Hamachi and chocolate soufflé. All were suggested by our waiter as gluten free. My daughter has been battling extreme stomach aches for the last 12hrs. I don’t think she had straight gluten but definitely cross contamination. I would expect this from a food truck but not from an expensive gourmet restaurant!! Very disappointing to lose a day of our vacation with my daughter so miserable.
Asked the waiter if the prie fixe menu could be modified to be gf. He indicated it could and seemed knowledgeable. As each course was brought out they indicated it was gf. However, starting having a reaction soon after. Based on the level of my reaction I suspect cross contamination.
I honestly unsure where the other great reviews are coming from. It’s like we are at a completely different restaurant? We sat down and asked about our gluten free options and there are close to none. No buns, no fries, a couple of fish dishes very modified. I would not recommend.
They did not have a gluten free menu but our server was very knowledgeable & our daughter had plenty of options. They brought out complimentary edamame when we sat down & she was so excited to be able to share that with us. She was easily able to find something on the children’s menu. In fact, the children get an appetizer with strawberries, oranges & carrots so that was another fun surprise. Finally, they had multiple dessert options for her as well. She got the strawberry sorbet with her kids meal but we also had the flour less chocolate cake so she could have a bite.
Staff is great. Super thorough and they go back and talk to the kitchen to confirm everything. We felt very safe here.
We have eaten here twice and it is amazing food. Never an issue and everything always tastes amazing.
Hands down, best place to eat in the area. We stayed at Aulani and took the shuttle over and walked back, very close. The food, atmosphere and servers were amazing. The hostess took our reservation by phone and I felt assured she knew they could handle the GF celiac guest just fine. Our server knew the menu like the back of his hand and went item by item with us. They can make almost anything GF and handle allergies really seriously. The manager came out to check on us and follow up. We had the Beef short ribs with veggies/sauce and Japanese specialty fish on a bed of Mash potatoes with crab meat. For dessert we had the flourless chocolate cake. Everything was HANDS DOWN the best we tried our entire trip to Oahu. It was amazing. We loved the food. It was a little pricey but nothing compared to the prices at Aulani resort. We loved the food so much and will totally go there again and again when we visit. Thank you ROY's!
Got takeout from here. Spoke to the manager who confirmed with the chef everything before I hung up. Got the chicken piccata with GF pasta and they used oil in the sauce instead of butter. Food was good but sauce was very light, would have liked more on the pasta and chicken. I appreciated how attentive the manager was to my dietary needs.
Fantastic, amazing, culinary experience 😊 no dedicated GF menu, however, be sure to tell them when making your reservation. They had adjustments ready for us. Very conscious staff. Unbelievably delish food !!!! The pineapple salad was enjoyed by all of us and the filet & lamb chops - yum - Be sure to get the flourless volcano chocolate cake ! A fantastic evening!!! Definitely recommend!!!
Wonderful dinner. The food and service we're both excellent. They have many options that are naturally gluten free. My son wanted pasta, so we asked even though it isn't on the menu. The chef was happy to oblige. Also they made sure he could share my chocolate souffle which was fantastic. This is a nice restaurant so it's not inexpensive, I think it was close to $200 for 2 adults and 2 kids, but for Hawaii and for the meal and service we had it was certainly worth it.
If I could leave zero stars, I would. I ordered a salad that was marked gf on the menu with grilled ahi added. I noted that it all needed to be gluten free so the server checked with the kitchen. They said I needed to change dressing to make it gf, fine, no worries. When it came out with the adjusted dressing, it also came out with oil & vinegar. Strange, so I asked the server to double check that the dressing was gf. He came back out with a thumbs up, so I started eating. About 5 bites in, the manager came hurrying out to the bar and informed me that the dressing does in fact contain gluten and asked if I wanted them to make me a fresh salad.. uh no, I needed to get out of there before things went down hill.
I was pretty sick that evening and had a migraine for 3 days after. Bleh.
My meal tonight was delicious!!! They offered a separate gluten free menu. I ordered shrimp cocktail (not on the menu) and the grilled vegetable plate plus salmon. So, so good!! Plus the chocolate soufflé with mixed berries (I don’t eat dairy). Our server, Oscar, was phenomenal!! Highly recommend!!
We had a wonderful experience. It’s definitely more Hawaiian style, not Japanese. They have clearly marked plates for gluten free (embossed flowers on them). Service was amazing. Views were amazing and most importantly, FOOD WAS AMAZING. I had the scallops and honey mustard braised ribs.
