Wow! What a great experience! They had an employee that focused exclusively on me. He opened several fresh pints for sampling, got a clean scooper for my final selection, and ultimately was obviously very familiar and sensitive about possible cross contamination. Plus, excellent ice cream! I will definitely return!!

Very conscientious of food allergies. They are always helpful and willing to scoop out of a fresh container of ice cream from the back to avoid cross contamination.

Most delicious ice cream I have had in a really long time. I had the salted caramel ribbon and my husband had the coffee and chocolate flavour. They offered to give me samples from containers in the back fridge but I already had my heart set on a flavour! They pulled out a new scoop and opened a new container for me, which was amazing. The scoops were in a drawer right below the waffle cone makers so that made me a little nervous. I would definitely agree with the comment below and buy a tub from the freezer if you want to be 100% safe.

When we first went to the counter they asked if we had any allergies. We told them we have one with Celiac. She told us what flavors were safe and then asked if we wanted her to scoop from an unopened carton in the back. Wow, impressive!
Yes
Staff asked first thing about allergies. We said our daughter has celiac, so they got a new spoon and got her ice cream from a brand new pint of ice cream in the freezer to be sure it was not cross contaminated. Their menu clearly details contents, so you know which to avoid. The ice cream was A M A Z I N G!! If your in the area, don’t pass up a stop here for ice cream.

Tell the staff you have celiac - they will tell you what flavors are safe, and they will get your order (as well as your samples) with clean spoons from unopened pints they have in the back. I do this every time, I have celiac and have never had a reaction. Seasonal flavors are awesome :)

Ok, so for both the people complaining about the wait and about cross contaminationanation, skip the line and grab a pint from the freezer. No wait (skip the line!) and they list all allergens and ingredients on each pint. I have celiacs and have been buying pints from them for 6 years or so with no issues.
The ice cream is delicious but cross contamination is a big issue. I finally gave up going here since I end up feeling sick more often than not.

Waffle cone batter. Everywhere. It looked like a cross contamination nightmare so I bailed out of the (forever too long) line. If you're celiac and interested in trying one of their gf flavors I would recommend visiting Petunia's bakery - shorter line and safer! This salt&straw location does tend to be a bit less busy though, so if you're game and want to request clean scoops/fresh tubs this would probably be the best to visit.
Multiple choices! The honey lavender ice cream is heaven!

Do you want to wait forty-five minutes to an hour or more for an average ice cream shop in Portland? Do you want to stress about if you have enough time to do that where you parked? Do you want the stress of finding a parking space in downtown Portland? Then this is the spot for you!
I will say, while we waited, and waited, and waited, those waiting in line with us were very pleasant and nice. The employees were also pleasant and helpful. The ice cream was OK, but a little strongly flavored. I tried almost everything, including the blue cheese one . . . one bite was enough of that. It tasted good, but in a one or two bite way. More than that would be too much as it was too strong.
As you are waiting on a public sidewalk, expect smokers around. I say this as I know many who have asthma triggered by it. I will say the ice cream is acceptable, but for all the trouble, it better be orgasmic! I will give them this: they are knowledable about what flavors are g-free.
There are far better shops in Portland. You want great ice cream, leave downtown and head for Cloud City.

The servers at salt and straw happily scoop gluten free ice cream out of separately packed pint jars with separate serving utensils than those used in the other ice creams. They were lovely and so was my GF/vegan ice cream (I'm not vegan and it was still great).
My experience was amazing! I have to be dairy free, soy free as well as celiac. They don't have the GF flavors listed, but I asked and they had a list of GF flavors. The server washed her hands, changed her gloves and got a new cartoon and scope to scope from. They don't have GF cones, but the ice cream was so delicious, it didn't matter. Their vegan ice creams are a coconut base. Enjoyed and didn't get sick!!!!

Went here twice during our week at Disney and each time the employees were very kind and patient. Both times got vanilla and the lavender honey in a cup which they scooped from the back. Didn’t get sick either time and the ice cream is delicious

Super cute place with a lot of options. The only gluten free option was out therefore I went out of the store empty-handed. The person helping me seem very knowledgeable willing to go in the back to get a scoop with awareness of allergies.

Vegan items were marked on menu, but not GF. Employees didn't seem 100% educated on GF needs, but they had a list of GF options. Best to ask them to check the list twice to be safe. Not cheap, but the flavors are unique and the quality is high.

I’ve had good experiences here and the scoopers have always been willing to scoop from a fresh tub for me but there’s a lot of staff so no guarantee. The only downside is a lot of the flavors are not gluten free.
