I had a great experience here. The staff were very knowledgeable about Celiac. I came with a group of friends, and they ordered some gluten foods. The waitress was so nice and she brought me a gluten-free substitute for free. On top of this, the food was amazing and had pretty good options! I recommend!
I do not recommend this restaurant for those with celiac disease. I ordered brunch at this restaurant (midtown location) last weekend on a date. I asked about gluten free options and mentioned having celiac disease. The waiter told me the Rancheros breakfast with the corn waffle and egg were gluten free, *as long as the waffle was baked. When the food came out, it was someone from the kitchen staff who handed me my plate of food, along with my date's food. We had both ordered the same thing, but mine had been marked with a flag. I got about half way through the waffle when the waiter came out and said, "wait! Hold up, your plate doesn't have the sauce on the side. The gluten free order usually has the sauce on the side." At that point he told me to stop eating and he checked with the kitchen. A few minutes later the manager came out and was very nice and apologized, but said they had made a mistake with my order. They had given me the wrong waffle. Now, perhaps this is my fault for taking the risk of ordering a corn waffle at this restaurant, but if I were a GF customer looking at reviews, I would want to know that this happened. This week I have a full on celiac rash, I am bloated, lethargic, sniffly, and just feel lousy. So moral of the story: if you are Celiac and do not want to risk a mistake, do not order from The Smith.
I went here with my boyfriend very recently after being diagnosed with celiac disease. They told me they took gluten free to the “next level” and they totally did! The manager came over after I ordered and reassured me of the kitchens expert knowledge. They even put a little toothpick flag in my dish to insure they checked it!
I went to the Lincoln Center location for lunch based on the sole fact that I saw it was GF friendly. I went there and was told they had no GF bread or pasta and that they didn't have a dedicated fryer. The person who made the reservation was told that the staff was trained thoroughly in food allergies and even though they put a little flag in my steak I was told the fries were defiantly going to be cross contaminated. My steak was not cooked how it was asked to be prepared but the steak sauce was good. I liked the atmosphere but as for a GF place, cross this off your list.
I had breakfast here. The food was very good and the kitchen and management were accommodating to avoid cross contamination. The only issue was that I found a potato near my omelette that must have fallen off my husbands plate when the runners carried the food and leaned over to put the plates down. The potatoes are cooked in a fryer that contains gluten. They made me a new dish and the manager came over to apologize and said she would make sure the runners carry the gluten free plates alone so this doesn't happen again.
Couldn't do GF waffles or pancakes. Not many options if you are coeliac and vegetarian. Staff understood but weren't overly helpful. Nice place but expensive.
Knowledgeable staff and dedicated frier. They can alter most items on the menu and they make sure that all food comes out with a red flag for security.
Highly recommend The Smith! Service, atmosphere and food all a win. The manager came over to speak to me about gluten free and confirmed my meal would be flagged. She also told me they take special care in the prep areas. Totally confident that I was in good hands and I did not get sick. The gf short rib pasta was delicious!
The Smith is, in a word, Exquisitely Fun! Everyone seems to welcome you. I am very sensitive Celiac and they have so many controls to prevent cross contamination that I was able to relax and just enjoy the evening. Dedicated Frier, flags to indicate that it is safe to eat and the flags are placed by chef before it leaves when he confirms it is safe.
Deeply knowledgeable staff with amazing focus on always improving. The bone in ribeye was one of the most tender cuts I have ever eaten in a restaurant.
This must be how Norm Peterson felt when he went to Cheers. Thanks for an amazing night.
This was probably the best experience we’ve had dining out ever! As others have said, we ordered our meals and shared our allergies, and the manager was at our table within minutes to explain the procedures in the kitchen and their use of the flag system to ensure no CC. Food came very quickly and was all flagged as expected; it was indulgent! Most of my family chose steaks with either fries from the dedicated fryer or squash salad, and I had scallops with risotto. My husband even said it may be the best steak he’s ever had. It is a little pricey, but between allergen knowledge and outstanding options, we will definitely be back.
