Celiacs please steer clear. I used to love NBC’s cakes prior to my diagnosis. I saw on their website that they do offer gluten-free baked goods, but they cannot guarantee elimination of cross contact. I wondered whether this was practical advice, or just legal air cover.
I decided to go to this location and chat with one of the bakers to learn more about the measures that are in place. The baker at this location informed me that the only measure the staff takes when preparing gluten-free cakes is that they wash all pans and utensils and sanitize all surfaces prior to preparation.
However, she *strongly* recommended that anyone with a “severe gluten allergy” avoid all their products. The bakers do not bake the gluten-free cakes on a different day or at a different time than the gluten-containing cakes. (So, imagine one baker working with gluten-free flours on one surface while a different baker works with gluten-containing flour on a different surface in the same kitchen.) There aren’t separate ovens, and the storage of gluten-containing versus gluten-free products isn’t completely segregated.
I appreciated the baker’s honesty about their approaches. Her insight reinforced to me the importance of finding and supporting quality gluten-free bakeries in the area.
This was our second time at this location. I asked on both occasions if the gluten-free cakes were made separately and on separate equipment. They told me yes both times and I also mentioned that my daughter was Celiac and could not have cross contamination. The first time my daughter had no issues, but this time almost immediately started showing signs of being glutened. Nausea, stomach aches. Although the cakes are delicious, it’s not worth chancing.
I love that I can always eat cake! I have never had an issue here and have ordered bundtlets as well as full sized cakes. My non gf family members have no problem eating the GF cake here.
I live in Wisconsin and always buy from the Nothing Bundt cake shop in Rockford, IL. There is only one flavor that is gluten free, chocolate chip, which is moist and topped with an amazing delicious cream cheese frosting. The frosting to cake ratio is perfect. I have been buying these Bundt cakes for 6 years now and I’m hopeful one day they will expand their gluten free flavor options. It’s nice to know that you can expect the same great quality and flavor even when your away from home.
Ordered 12 mini cakes for birthday party, with 4 of them being gf. They had 2 flavors: chocolate chip and white raspberry. Both were a bit sweet but very good. The gf products are packaged separately both in the display cases and as part of our order. Everyone who ate gf were very happy to be included with their own cakes. We will be back.
I am fairly to the gluten free diet, but I must say, this lemon raspberry cake was absolutely delicious. I my eyes you aren't loosing out on any flavor at all. Will definitely go again. They also offer a chocolate chip bundt cake as well.
I ordered 2 gluten free bundt cakes-- Chocolate chip and raspberry lemon-- and both made me SO sick. I tried to eat half of each on two separate occasions and got violently ill each time. Realized that their gluten free cakes are NOT safe. They taste good, but not worth the pain.
Have always loved the GF flavor cake available! Recently had a birthday party and ordered a dozen buntinis. I ordered 3 GF and 10 non GF. When I picked up the order all 12 were in the same box, GF only inches away from regular flavors. Customer Service stated that to ensure safety I would have had to order a dozen GF.
My husband called to ask about their GF procedures and they advised that there was no way to avoid cross contamination in the kitchen and that they would not recommend for someone with Celiac. I did eat these before I was diagnosed with Celiac and the cakes are very tasty, so gluten intolerant might be able to enjoy them still.
