From start to finish this place was awesome! I have a wheat and Barley allergy, on top of Celiac and they were very knowledgeable and most entrees on their menu were GF. I was in heaven. Even could have had a dessert! I’m not always keen on eating out due to my allergies and usually have reactions due to cross contamination... here that is not the case. They asked from the beginning if anyone had any allergies. They also brought me GF banana muffins vs the usual bread. I had the Lump Crab dish and it was awesome! I would highly recommend this if u have allergies.
The staff were knowledgable of celiac disease and the ambience and menu are intriguing (e.g., alligator, rabbit, black ants, elk, etc. ).
Unfortunately, on the night my family and I went, the menu was very limited for GF. We had the cheese board w/ the bread and crackers separated on the side. For main course, I had shrimp skewers. Not much more was available GF or safe.
They do not have a dedicated fryer. They indicate they can prepare different dishes as GF, but then the waiter returned to tell me that the item had gluten containing ingredients in it.
I initially had been excited by the reviews and pictures on FMGF. Unfortunately, when I asked about these items and the pictures, they either were no longer part of the menu, which one has to understand fine restaurants change the menu frequently, or it was not prepared in a safe, non-contact way.
For people who may not be GF, the food looked, and, I was told, tasted great. Unfortunately, other than for friends or family desiring the experience of game food, I would probably not return due to the limitation of GF options and uncertainty of our waiter.
I was so excited to try this place for my graduation dinner, I wanted gator fritters so badly. Their menu online does not reflect their actual menu, they have not had the gator fritters for a minute which was disappointing to say the least. We didn’t even stay to eat so I don’t know but the fish and steak they had all seemed safe and the reviews they have on here are all good. Just to save you some time, don’t try to look ahead at the menu.
Best experience in Savannah. Definitely recommend. Plenty of GF options that are absolutely delicious! Everything is marked on the menu except for the cocktails. I messed up and ordered a cocktail at the end that had a shot of beer in it. Meal was perfect.
After reading lots of reviews and top 10 lists I landed on Alligator Soul Restaurant, Historic Downtown Savannah for our choice. GF options, farm to table and exotic game meats. We enjoyed Alagator Fritters, Venison and Kangaroo. The Roo was pretty good after being brined for 3 days. Very happy with the service and the meal, definitely recommend! Our waiter first asked if we had any allergies before taking our order. They have fresh baked banana bread muffins as a GF bread. GF items are marked on the menu. They said they have dedicated friers.
Fabulous food! LOVE this restaurant. The chef is great. The quality, cook and seasonings on the meals are top notch and incredible. They have had a delicious homemade GF bread option each time we've eaten here (a wonderful Naan and great banana bread muffins). Beyond delicious food, they are very educated about celiac and I have never once gotten sick here.
One of the best meals I've had (period) and same for.my husband who has no dietary restrictions! Many options and the server was the most knowledgeable I have ever encountered to date -- they clearly spend a lot of time educating their staff about each dish (from allergen perspective and more) and it shows. Food was delicious. Menu items marked GF but also others that could be accommodated upon asking. Meal started with an amuse-bouche from the chef including a separate one that was GF. Kitchen and staff were very aware of cross-contact potential points; GF muffin (their sub for table bread) came out slower because they realized it or the butter had possibly encountered gluten and they took the time to correct before sending out. Dedicated GF fryer. Delicious meal with scallops (modified to have rice instead of gluten as written on menu) and husband had the game meat; server brought it out with sauces on side and a GF safe sauce so I could steal a bite as well. So full but could not resist a GF dessert at a place like this. Very densely delicious flourless chocolate cake for the true chocolate lovers out there. Couldn't recommend more highly.
The food here was delicious - we did small plates of dishes that appeared on the entre menu (shrimp and grits, gumbo) and then ordered entrees (mahi and alligator cake special and the blackened scallops). All of the food was flavorful and well prepared. Wine selection was extensive and service was friendly and efficient. Alligator Soul is a Savannah cornerstone dining experience. As with most fine dining experiences, they do not have a separate gf menu, but can easily accommodate gf needs with many of the menu items with minor adjustments. Old school service that includes an in-depth knowledge of the menu and wine/bar components. It’s the perfect spot to be a little adventurous and try something different. Ownership recently changed, but the service and knowledge level remain steady, I always feel confident eating here and have never gotten sick. It can be difficult to get a reservation, so plan ahead.
Excellent restaurant and really takes food allergies, dietary restrictions, etc. seriously. The first thing our server asked after greeting us was whether we had any food allergies, and explained that the restaurant has separate pans and fryers for gluten-free individuals. The menu was also clearly marked with gluten free dishes. Additionally, when they brought out the standard bread basket they brought me a little gluten free banana bread muffin! I felt really taken care of by the staff here.
Great food and great service! They have a dedicated area for gluten free people. Gluten free dishes are marked on the menu. So not a separate gluten free menu. I was very impressed with this place. The only down fall was the prices. We've never been to a restaurant that expensive. However the food was awesome!!!
The menu is very unique. Everything we had was out of this world. Gluten-free items were marked on the menu. Other items could be modified, if possible. Reservations are highly recommended. We couldn’t get one so arrived when the restaurant opened to eat at the bar. Vanessa and John were the bartender s. Very attentive. The entire experience was amazing!
We had a great dinner at Alligator Soul. I’m a bit surprised by the other reviews recently that had an experience that was less than ideal. Our server was extremely diligent and well informed about the gluten free options on the menu. We ordered the scallops and the cheese and meat board for apps. The candied alligator was very good and their selection of meats and cheeses were outside of the norm for charcuterie which I always enjoy. They did have GF crackers. My boyfriend ordered the wild game of the day, which was antelope and also GF. I had a bite and it was tasty! But the duck I ordered for my main was breathtakingly delicious. BF had a few bites of the duck and regretted his choice in the antelope as the duck was perfectly cooked and savory and sweet. Ah man. I wish I could eat that meal all over again. The cocktails were also very good! I did ask my BF to skip the gluten bread service when they offered, and he did so they only brought out the GF muffin. He’s a keeper, I know :)
The food was AMAZING! There were three of us with gluten allergies. My mom got the shrimp and grits and loved them. I got the diver scallops and the chef made it not only gluten free but dairy free as well for me. They were cooked to perfection! My daughter got the filet with mashed potatoes and asparagus. She lost her mind at how delicious her meal was. Our server David was a delight and was super knowledgeable about allergies. We got the flourless chocolate torte with coconut sorbet to round out the meal. 10/10 will go back many more times!
Went after a long day at work. It was a great experience and the food was safe/delicious, but it was not the all-encompassing wow experience I came to see in these other reviews. I sat at the bar, was promptly given menus and water, ordered a drink, I got the strawberry salad (minus dairy) then the candied alligator. It was pretty good. I was offered a gf muffin, with butter (which I’m ok with in small amounts), my entree ended up coming out with a cream sauce, had to send it back. There were not many items for me to choose from, but I felt safe and the food was good.
We had reservations and at the time let them know about my celiac. They were fully prepared and offered a banana nut muffin in lieu of the bread, made sure to point out GF options, and did NOT disappoint on flavor!
This is a higher end restaurant so, it was perfect for celebrating our wedding anniversary.
Wonderful staff and very accommodating to my GF needs. Delightful food and very creative dishes. Very relaxed and romantic atmosphere. Highly recommend
Amazing! There were several GF options and because everything is made fresh with a knowledgeable chef several other dishes can be altered to be GF. I had the meat tray appetizer with the candied alligator (so good!) they left off the bread and added a chick pea cracker. I ordered the exotic meal altered to be GF which was venison with butternut squash purée and broccolinee and potatoes. I also ate some of my husbands shrimp and grits (I wanted to steal his dish it was sooo good.) We split the flourless chocolate torte that was so delicious. Everything we ate was so good and left such a great taste behind. Definitely somewhere I would return to eat again.
I have NEVER felt so COMFORTABLE and SAFE regarding Celiac at a restaurant. This was absolutely the biggest win ever for us, and I'd go back over and over even despite the heftier price tag, if I could. We already checked to see if they had more reservation slots open for the rest of our stay, and they unfortunately did not.
•Our server, Andrew, was beyond phenomenal and deserves a raise. He greeted us at our table and gave us the entire gluten-free rundown the moment we arrived, was available for any and all questions, was fast AND friendly, and was so amazingly thorough that at one point he ended up taking time to Google and visit websites of the makers of a few different brands of gin to verify which ones were Celiac safe. Some of the issues he brought up to us as potential concerns for cross contact were INCREDIBLY detailed - a maple syrup the dried alligator is seasoned with at one point was stored in barrels that used to hold a bourbon which contained gluten. That's the most detailed explanation of anything I've ever heard, and this guy went above and beyond in making us aware of everything. SO impressed! We are Andrew fans for life.
•There IS a dedicated GF fryer. It isn't the main fryer, but there is one. And whenever possible the restaurant breads in cornmeal.
•The only GF dessert is a flourless chocolate cake, which is solid chocolate buttercream instead of almond flour as most restaurants use (which meant I could actually have it for once!)
•One of the bartenders has Celiac, so the staff has asked him about things frequently and is familiar with certain details from that.
•All of the GF items on the menu are marked clearly, and they can work with you on some others (change sauces, etc). They don't have gluten-free pasta options (for mac and cheese or whatever), but they even had a GF flatbread made of chickpea that we had with a charcuterie board as an appetizer.
•The atmosphere is outta this world! Beautifully classy with a wine cellar feel. Excellent.
•Covid-careful. Masks are required, and all the servers wore them constantly. They take your health seriously in all ways.
•We had an appetizer, two cocktails, two entrees (one was a special - we recommend the antelope), and dessert, and it was between $150 and $200 before the tip. We found that reasonable.
•The free pre-appetizer, which is breaded and fried and literally a single bite apiece, was Celiac safe, because they used the dedicated fryer.
•Service was perfectly timed, professional, friendly, and everything was exactly as we ordered it.
The first thing our waiter Matthew asked us was if there were any allergies or dietary restrictions to be aware of. He checked with the chef for me multiple times without hesitation when I had questions about a dish & if I could eat it. I got the catch of the day which was a swordfish dish and it was great. I was also given a gluten free banana nut muffin when bread was brought to our table. There was a gf flourless chocolate torte on the dessert menu along with ice cream.
Very knowledgeable staff, many options without need for modification and they have a separate dedicated celiac fryer. Food was terrific, so was the service.
When our waitress welcomed us, she told us to a few little things about the restaurant. When she was done with her spill, she said, “Does anyone have any dietary restrictions?”. I told her I did, “gluten” I said. She asked if I was celiac and I said yes. She said she would alert the chef and he would get me taken care of.
She brought out two banana muffins for my bread course and I had shrimp and grits for dinner. They were some of the best shrimp and grits I’ve ever had. My husband (not celiac) had the fish of the day and oysters and raved about it.
We can’t wait to come back!
