The gluten free menu was sparse and did contain mostly meatless menu items, but the grilled shrimp rellenos were amazing. While gluten is merely an intolerance issue for me, I did notice that they are fairly forthcoming about possible cross contamination and request that you inform them of the severity of any/all food allergies.
I ate at Chuy's last night and was very disappointed. All their meat is filled with gluten so vegetarian fare is all you can have. Unless you eat shrimp which I do but not at many restaurants. Gluten free menu is small and not appealing at all. I had the veggie enchiladas and still had a reaction from cross contamination. I can't even give this place one star! Well, you can't post a review without at least one star so one star it gets.
The manager came out, was very knowledgeable, and was able to suggest and fix things not on the regular gluten free menu. Ask for the baked chips and 'boom-boom' sauce. Light and delicious. Wait staff was enthusiastic about accommodating and modifying for gf, too. A one-of-a-kind Tex-Mex restaurant where all the food is made from scratch. Watch one of the staff make tortillas right in front of the kitchen.
Manager explained what I could have so I ordered exactly as she explained: Chicka Chicka Boom Boom enchiladas with refried beans and no rice. Tested with my Nima Sensor and it tested positive for gluten. The manager was kind and took the meal off the ticket. They did bring me baked tortilla chips and salsa but I did not test them for gluten.
Spoke to manager Ricky about my need for a truly gf meal. He specially prepared a grilled chicken salad and baked some gf tortilla chips for me. They might not be able to make these accommodations at peak times, but at 2PM I got a safe delicious meal.
The food sucks here. I got the chicken enchiladas or whatever they are called and it was terrible.
Update: This restaurant is very dangerous for a celiac. All meats are marinated in beer. The corn tortillas are made on the same tortilla press as the flour tortillas. Only a couple of the sauces are safe. Chips and queso is not safe. I got extremely sick after eating here the 2nd time. I will not be back. Original review: Our waiter was unsure what was safe so he had the manager come over to talk to me. She was knowledgeable and explained what I could eat. You have to be very careful here and make sure they know if you have celiac. They prepared me my own chips and had to clean the tortilla maker and make me corn tortillas. I had chicken enchiladas with boom boom sauce. They were delicious. Only a few of the sauces are gluten free so make sure to ask. The queso is not gluten free. They have to prepare all of the meats without any seasoning to make it gluten free also. My food was good and I felt fine afterwards. Just be careful.
If you’re celiac, you can eat very few food in this restaurant. We had Tacos without meat there. They do have a gluten free menu but they cannot avoid cross-contamination. Comparing the gluten-free menu to their normal menu, we think they could have made much more food gluten-free than what they currently have. It seems that some of their food (like all the meat and sauces) are Packaged food, which contains gluten so they cannot substitute anything.
Just diagnosed with severe Celiac disease, (still in denial), and this place was a no go for me. From what I've read, if the staff and manager is knowledgeable, they should be able to come up with something, but the chips share the fryer and the corn tortillas share the grill with the flour. So eat at your own risk 💩 Love the mojitos though!
Unfortunately Chuy's is no longer safe. I was informed on Saturday that they now marinate their fajitas meat in beer. Also the corn tortillas are cooked on the same surface as flour tortillas.
A lot of the staff are not knowledgeable of what is celiac friendly and what isn’t... beware a lot of the meats are marinated in beer!! And lots of cross contamination issues, i got super sick before I even left the restaurant.
They do not have a GF menu. The server went through the menu item by item and was very helpful. I did NOT get sick. They do not have a dedicated fryer so therefore there is cross contamination risk of the chips and some rice dishes.
The manager was very knowledgeable and very helpful. He even knew that I couldn’t have the fajitas because they’re marinated in beer. Staff was awesome. Unfortunately, very few options, but I would definitely return, just for the service. I got the mexi-Cobb salad with roasted chicken and a side of guacamole instead of dressing. Super yummy, and I don’t feel sick at all.
Very few gluten free menu options - which is odd for a Mexican restaurant, and is a strong sign that most of their food must be factory processed before it gets there. My meal must have been cross contaminated.
I can’t speak for the rest of the restaurant chain but the Chuy’s in Sterling was great! Jeff the manager was very kind and sat down and told us what we could have on the menu. We called ahead and they prepared chips gluten free, drained the fryer and refilled with new oil. The key is call ahead and let them know you are coming and you have a gluten issue. I had tacos and my daughter had nachos. The boom boom sauce was a great alternative to the queso which they make with a rue.
Called ahead to learn about GF options; the person who answered the phone wasn't particularly knowledgeable about it but she was patient with my questions and willing to go find someone who knew the answers. Got to the restaurant, and the server confirmed that the chips are GF and cooked in a dedicated fryer. She said the proteins are all GF. My daughter wanted the nachos; she was first told they are not safe because the chips used are different from the ones on the table and aren't fried in the dedicated fryer. But then the server came back and said they could make the nachos with the same chips that are served on the table -- just ask for the "trash can nachos." Overall they could be a little more helpful to their GF diners. Wish they offered either a dedicated menu or even GF indicators on their regular menu. Plus, it should be easy to swap out a flour tortilla with corn if someone wants tacos.
Our waiter was able to direct me to wheat free options and even knew which salsas/sauces were safe. He offered to sub non-marinated meat at my request. Very good service! However, all fajita meat is marinated in beer and they use shared fryers—I don’t know that it would be at all safe for Celiacs.
I love Chuy’s! I’ve learned, however, what I can and can’t eat after talking with managers at different locations. I always get the Chicka-Chicka-Boom-Boom and I’m fine eating that! I am also fine with the chips, but I am not sure if they are contaminate free. I do sometimes have problems with the ground beef.
Options are extremely limited here! There was only a couple of items I was informed could be modified to be GF. I was even told to avoid the chips and salsa! I appreciate the staff but I will not be returning.
This is one of my favorite restaurants but it is absolutely NOT celiac friendly. I don’t have severe immediate reactions from cross contamination, but I was more sick after eating here than any other restaurant since my diagnosis. It was upsetting because I really love Chuy’s.
Ate at the one in Olathe tonight. The fajita meat is marinated in shiner bok beer. The enchiladas, tacos and flautas are all options with a variety of sauces that are GF. The manager spent a lot of time explaining. He confirmed a separate fryer for the corn chips, and they fried my flautas in this fryer, but nothing with flour is done in this fryer. I will eat here again.
When here with family I asked if they had a GF menu, they literally have not one item that is gluten free if you look on the nutritional pages on the website. Really says a lot about the quality of food. It is all processed nothing fresh here so nothing they can do to help you eat. Many other good places in the area to eat.
Incredibly tasty Mexican food. Just avoid the obvious tortilla based dishes. Had the chicka boom boom enchiladas and they were SO GOOD! Doubt chips are in dedicated fryer but that never bothers us so I don’t ask. Will definitely be back!!
The manager came over and listed which items were safe, but did warn me that they don’t guarantee. I’ve heard that in other restaurants and didn’t have a problem since I don’t have a severe allergy, but I got violently ill. I only get that sick when there is a lot of gluten in what I ate. Beware.
The food tastes wonderful, so my family loves going, but I always get sick. Like, seriously sick. Last time I had to eat here, I ended up laying in bed for a day or two in pain.
I spoke with the manager about being celiac and he personally made me a deluxe chicken enchilada to ensure no cross contamination. The menu is not marked, but JUST ASK the right questions! Manager was awesome.
I am a celiac and sensitive and I have eaten at Chuy's several times in the past 12 months. Never had a reaction. The manager I spoke to was knowledgeable and some servers were. The servers who were unsure, went to the manager to get a correct answer for me. I always get three chicken enchiladas with Ranchero sauce and Mexican rice and refried beans; they have always been tasty. I suggest you be sure to tell the server you are celiac so they won't think you are a fad dieter.
The waitress had the manager come out and talk to me about what they could offer GF. He did tell me that they did not have a dedicated fryer for the chips, but had some baked for me so that I could safely enjoy them too. He also brought out some fresh baked tortillas that were GF & delicious. He did a great job going over what was safe and was not. I felt safe eating here & will definitely be back again!
Staff pretty knowledgeable and accommodating. I asked for the manager just to be certain because I was really uncomfortable after reading reviews. He was knowledgeable and gave me many assurances about them cooking everything separate that I was ordering. Wish I could’ve had chips—they make so many it’s pretty surprising that they don’t have a dedicated fryer. Very very limited menu as others have indicated.
I called a month before going as we were planning our company Christmas dinner, the manager was very nice and explained there are several options but the risk of cross contamination was very present. However, when I actually went, the staff was Not trained or informed on anything gluten free. Whatever manager was working that night did not know anything as well as they both didn't even know they had a GF menu! The waitress came back and told me that my best bet is to order something and she'd run back and ask if it was gluten free.. Thankfully, my friend ended up finding the GF menu online for me. Still good service minus that huge factor, and they let us camp out there while we chatted with patience. Just wish they were more informed of what they offer.
My 12 yo has celiac. Our server checked with the manager and the manager did a great job of helping us with her meal. He explained what was safe for her to eat. This is all new to us and he was so helpful! He was very knowledgeable about celiac and gluten sensitivity and safe practices. My daughter was very happy, she loved her meal, and did not get sick.
Only one gluten free option... cheese enchilada (check on sauces) and rice. chips not gluten free.
I ate here this evening. It was fantastic. The manager came out explained the options to me and didnt seem annoyed to do it either. They made fresh chips and I ordered a small dish of the boom boom queso it is spicy but amazing flavor. All the vegetarian sauces are gluten free. I ordered the Baja shrimp tacos they put them on blue corn tortillas I believe and the refried beans were gluten free and they said I could get double beans or a salad I just opted to have the boom boom queso as my other side. I wish I did double beans they are the best I've ever eaten. My son who is 11 months old ate most of them. It was a great experience with amazing food. I feel like it is sometimes hard to find this at restaurants. Having celiac is such a hassle and I get annoyed at myself when I have to tell people so for them to be as accommodating and kind made my dinning experience even better. I will definitly be back.
