I thought they were very careful with my order. They explained the risk of cross contamination and what they would do to mitigate it, ie cooking my order in a foil package. I could see the preparation and cooking area and felt completely safe. One of the best gluten free pizza bases I’ve ever had.
Great pizza! Delicious combinations of local farm ingredients, including house made sausage. They follow very specific precautions and steps to ensure that gf pizza is safe for celiacs. This includes servers changing gloves, preparing toppings in a separate space in the kitchen and wrapping the pizza with foil before baking in the large wood fired oven.
I’ve eaten at flatbread many times. I really have to be extra careful to tell them to cook my flatbread on a separate pan. It can still go in the woodfired oven. It just has to be on a separate pan. And then I need to remind them to use a separate pizza cutter… If I just say gluten-free and don’t specify these things, it’s not good. The last time I ate there I ordered takeout in a hurry and I forgot to say to take special caution and I got severely glutened.
So I have a what allergy but as time goes on I feel I may also have celiac. Anyway, at first glance the reviews are good re. safety and the waitress seemed super knowledgeable and explained they use a “foil cage” to bake the gf flatbreads in the same oven but are protected… I proceeded to order one and by the time I went back to my hotel room I passed out from the cross contamination. Call it gluten drugged if you will.
Unfortunately if you are EXTREMELY sensitive stay away. You’re welcome.
I would give this place zero stars if I could. Went with my family of 4 and I was able to eat salad only- owners were rude and told me “this is not the place for you” as a celiac. They prepare gf pizza where all the flour is and won’t wash their hands. They said they would put it on some thing in the oven, but they couldn’t guarantee anything would be clean. Staff was not knowledgeable and unhelpful. One of my worst experiences as a celiac!! Don’t go there.
This place is pricey (I usually spend about $30 just for my GFDF flatbread). However the GF flatbreads (with vegan cheese as an option) are good. The ambience is nice with the wood-fired pizza oven in one of the dining rooms. It can get pretty loud inside when it’s busy though, which makes it hard to have a conversation. The outdoor seating is quieter.
I am GFDF. I always have a conversation with the waitstaff to confirm that they’ll prepare it in the separate GF area and be careful to prevent cross contamination. I really like the crust and the vegan cheese is alright. I’ve been probably a dozen times over the years and it’s been reliably good.
On my most recent visit when they brought my GF pizza to the table they said it was gluten free without me having to confirm, which was nice. Hoping that’s now a standard practice for them.
A recent time on a very busy (and likely understaffed with resulting slow service) evening my pizza was a little undercooked so the cheese and crust weren’t as browned and tasty. If I notice this in the future I’ll ask them to cook it a little more, but this is the first time I remember it being an issue.
I usually get the New VT Sausage flatbread, because that way I get some protein in my meal (since vegan cheeses usually have none/almost none). I wish there were some more protein-containing options (that didn’t require the extra cost of ordering a custom pizza). A vegetarian DF protein option would be really nice, such as black beans or BBQ tempeh. Edit: There is also a pepperoni option, and also a buffalo chicken option, but it has blue cheese dressing on it so it’d be missing an important ingredient when made DF.
I’m asymptomatic so can’t report on any reactions to possible cross contamination, but I’ve always felt good about their explanations and dedication to making sure my pizza was prepared in a celiac safe way. There is still a risk from being in the same facility and oven with gluten, but they use a separate cooking surface in the oven than they use for gluten pizzas, and I usually confirm that the GF pizza will be above the gluten pizzas.
Another plus is that some of their ingredients are local and/or organic.
That all being said, I usually end up spending $30 here so taking off a star for how expensive it is for what you get. Just checked the menu for current prices: The New VT Sausage flatbread with vegan cheese and GF crust (only small size available) comes to $25.50 before tax and tip. This seems much higher than it should be for what you get.
Also fyi their site says they only offer reservations for parties of 7 or more and maybe only for certain times of day. Otherwise is first come first served.
Bon endroit
Serveuse connaissantes la maladie
Pizza Cuit à part
Cependant, selon moi, il existe un risque de contamination avec la farine même si le personnel fait la pizza dans un autre endroit éloigné
Pas de réaction
Intolérant symptomatique
The servers immediately explained that they have a separate preparation area and use foil in the wood fire pizza oven. While they couldn’t guarantee no cross-contamination because there is flour on the premises, they were very accommodating and knowledgeable, making me feel safe. I am very sensitive to gluten contamination and did not get sick afterwards meaning they were indeed very careful.
BONUS!! It was honestly the best pizza crust I’ve ever had! It comes from a little Vermont farm called Hillside Lane and I will definitely be ordering it online.
This restraunt was in a way, a disappointment. We had to wait an hour for a table. They had maple lemonade that sounded really good, but ended up being lemonade with pretty much no maple taste(still was good though). The pizza was pretty bad. The crust was floppy and barely browed, so there wasn't crispness like usually with thin crusts. Wouldn't really recommend.
Have a GF pizza option and will mark for “allergy”. Pizza was good, no idea how safe the kitchen is, but they claim they keep separate to limit cross contamination. Went on a Friday night in December and was really busy (bus boy became our server), so not sure if they are as careful at peak times, but all in all a good experience. No reason to not believe them, would go back. Celiac daughter enjoyed it, no symptoms. Would recommend you go on waitlist on their website as wait at peak times can be 1 hour+. We went at 5:15pm and used online waitlist and waited 5 mins, vs families that just walked in and waited 30-60 mins.
I ordered a Medecine Wherl pizza with a gluten free crust. This is the FIRST gluten free pizza that I have ever had that was delicious! I had almost given up on finding an edible GF pizza crust. American Flatbrwad gets their GF crusts from Hillside Farm in Vermont. We also had a salad special- yummy and large! Our server, Tom, was knowledgeable, attentive and prompt! We also enjoyed the musicians that played in rhe Speakeasy section if the restaurant . All in all, an enjoyable evening .
Went here for lunch. It wasn't busy, so we had no issues. They asked when I ordered if it was a preference or Celiac, so they are knowledgeable. We sat at the bar and the bartender, Cal, was great. Pizza was REALLY good and I did not get sick. I'm a super sensitive Celiac. We would go back. Non gf hubby said his Margherita pizza was one of the best he has had!
Wish we could give it Zero stars because of their attitude and lack of caring. We ordered the gluten free pizza, as we have in other wood fired pizza place’s however when it came they told us it was cooked on the same stone as all the other pizzas and covered with flour. Ok. We asked would they make a new one cooked in a pan? No they would not. They said their people don’t wash hands between pizzas and wouldn’t make an exception. Had a starving son so we just up and left and went to Shaw’s to buy food. Wife stayed since we were with other people.
I have been to another American Flatbread location and had a lovely experience at both. The restaurant has a warm, cozy, casual atmosphere that was great for my family and I. There is even a waiting area with a big fireplace and comfy couches. The service was quick and all of the food was very good, both the gluten free and regular pizza. You can do a build-your-own pizza or choose from the good number of suggested combos. Every topping is gluten free so they can all be used on the gluten free pizza crust that is offered. The pizza is made in a brick oven with the gluten free being made in its own tin to avoid cross contamination. I did not get sick either time or location I dined at American Flatbread. All of the toppings are fresh and organic as well. There also is an amazing mango hot sauce available at each table. Overall my family and I loved this dinner and would return again.
I ordered a GF flatbread on a quiet mid afternoon. Only a few other people there. The cook brought the dish over and I asked, “Gluten free, right?” He looked surprised and when I insisted that was my order, he took it back and remade the flatbread. The 2d time he left off an ingredient in the original order. I was concerned the mistake might happen for someone else so I mentioned it to the waitstaff. The manager took 50% off the bill. Always good to double check!
Eaten here multiple times. I have never gotten sick and it’s always been amazing. Crust is from a local bakery. Big up charge of $5.50 but worth it for the once a year I eat here. Celiac safe and they try to minimize cross contamination. Also have salads for non pizza lovers. Be ready to have a $60 check for two pizzas with drinks though.
Gluten free flatbread was very good!
We had to call to ask (couldn’t find it on the website or menu) but they offer dairy free cheese! Gluten free crust has eggs, but regular crust is vegan so both my vegan sister and my gluten/dairy-free self could have pizza. Felt safe with their covid safety practices.
Soooo good They buy the dough from a gluten free bakery and bake it in the oven on a separate foil. While they are extremely cautious and I thank goodness have not gotten sick here they do warn you that there is flour in the air and around because it is a pizzeria. I am extremely sensitive though and have only had positive experiences here. I recommend
Went here for the gluten free pizza/flatbread. I travel alot and have had better GF many times. It was good, not great crust. I has the local maple fennel sausage topping which was sadly dry and and pretty tasteless, probably because they cut into small pieces and dries it out. Evolution salad was fresh but unremarkable. Small white pie (cheese and herb) with two toppings (rosemary, sausage) was $18, yikes.
Was told by the wait staff that they had allergy safe options and could make us a pizza with fresh ingredients. Waitress came back after we had been here 45 minutes to tell us the guy who preps the regular pizzas (who is covered with flour) has been sticking his hands into the cooler with the allergy ingredients.
The nicest thing I can say about tonight is that they comped my GF cider. Now I have a starving celiac child and have to search for another safe option. I cannot say enough about the lack of knowledge of the kitchen staff. I will never return and never recommend this place for celiacs.
Found this place by chance. Walked in with my mom, thinking I wouldn’t be able to eat here as well. Noticed gluten free options on the menu, talked with the waitress and the manager and found out they have a completely separate area to prepare their pizza and cook it for the gluten pizzas! They also cook all pizzas in an aluminum pan so if you have a dairy allergy as well as a gluten allergy, you can rest easy knowing they take the time to significantly lower the risk of cross contamination for us dairy free customers! Had the pizza and it was amazing! Would definitely go there again!
