Every server comes to the table and the first thing they ask is if there are any allergies at the table. We went with myself (celiac), and 2 of my bridesmaids, each of which have allergies (shellfish and onions). They were able to keep all of our food from cross contamination, brought each plate out separately for safety, and double checked options for my friend with an onion allergy. The food is delicious, the gluten free menu is pretty extensive, and the atmosphere is so comfortable and pleasant.

Knowledgeable waiter — he asked if there were any allergies or sensitivities when we began ordering. Steak and shrimp and broccoli were amazing. Since I can no longer find capsules for my Nima, I rely upon these reviews exclusively and this restaurant did not fail

The server asked and double checked.
Everything I asked about could be made GF. It everything can be made dairy free.
Food was great. Service was excellent. First time at Burton’s in Charlottesville. Usually go to Mount Pleasant when on vacation.

Ordered food online and indicated that I have a gluten allergy. My fiancé is lactose intolerant and they called to ask about cross contamination with dairy for him. It was so sweet! There is also a note section where you can add special notes.
Huge gf menu! Almost everything can be made gf

Absolutely outstanding!!! I am gluten free and dairy free, and there were a ton of options for me and even a dinner roll! The entire staff was incredibly attentive to my allergies and every person who brought out my food immediately added that it was both gluten and dairy free. Turns out the owner of the chain has celiac so it makes sense that they definitely get it. 100% recommend
Wonderful GF menu, and I could tell the wait staff was knowledgeable. Probably the best restaurant you’ll find if you have celiac.
Yes
Amazing calimari!!! Plus they have gf rolls. Friendly staff. Make reservations as they get very busy.
Yes
amazing food and quick service, the staff was extremely helpful and knowledgeable and there were only a couple menu items that couldn’t be modified to be gluten free. i highly recommend the pork chop and the calamari! we are traveling and made a pit stop at burtons, otherwise we would definitely return. a must-eat in charlottesville if you are gluten free!!

Awesome food and knowledgeable staff. Excellent, large GF menu and seems dedicated to providing safe meals.

Always delicious and best of all, SAFE!
Yes
I felt very safe here. As soon as I walked in they asked if anyone needed a gf menu and the first thing the server asked was about allergens. Whole menu that is gluten free!
Yes
Food is really good. This is the most attentive gluten free restraunts I have ever been to. The food did not make me sick at all. They use a seperate fryer for anything gluten free.
The staff is knowledgeable and the gluten free menu is extensive. They serve their gluten free items on different shaped plates so they are easily identifiable. We didn’t receive great service but this place is celiac friendly.
Yes
Gold standard in Celiac. Founder has celiac, almost the whole menu is available and fantastic.
Yes
The staff is knowledgeable and the food is delicious! I had fries and an amazing sandwich! I haven’t been so full in such a long time! I didn’t need to have a long conversation with the staff about my needs as a Celiac, which is another plus! Definitely coming back!
Yes
Had the seafood pasta with gluten free noodles-it was quite delicious. Service, however, was lacking.
Yes
Really enjoyed eating at a safe place for a person with celiac disease. Wish they were closer to Illinois. Will definitely return & look for their other locations. My meal was excellent!
Yes
The staff and kitchen are trained and they have a computer that actually will alert them if dairy or gluten is present. We are gluten/dairy free with celiac and actually booked our vacation around this restaurant. We can have crab cakes! They have a separate full menu of choices!
Yes
Great menu! I’m Keto & Celiac. They have limited sugar-free, GF, Paleo options plus a full GF menu
Everything was amazing about this place other than the fact it was a bit pricey. Staff was VERY knowledgeable and understanding and food was great. Best meal I’ve had I a while.
Yes
very good food but is very pricey. i love their gf calamari. :) Weve come a few times. im allergic to soy also. one time the risotto bothered me but another time I was ok. always tastes great
Excellent for my very contamination sensitive gluten free boyfriend. The owner is celiac too and you can tell. The waiters are clearly trained, they confirm specific kitchen utensils, grilling area, and frier specifically for celiacs.
Yes
Great place for a celiac! The waitress was great about handling allergies and my food was brought out separately. On the higher end of the price range but with so many options of food to choose from and the special care they take its worth it.

This is apparently our second time going to this restaurant. We actually didn't remember going there the first time, until we saw a previous review we had left on a different website - both of these occasions were while traveling. To put it simply, they don't disappoint. I have Celiac and thus must eat gluten free - not because it's the "cool" thing to do, but because I'll get sick otherwise. First, the restaurant is VERY accommodating. They have LOTS of options for appetizers, entrees, and desserts. One of the best out there. Additionally, our server tonight was Eric (Erik?). He was Very good. He was extremely knowledgeable of the menu and Celiac/gluten free dining needs. He was able to explain and suggest dinner options like he wrote the menu himself. He even suggested I try a combination of risotto and sauce that I would not have tried otherwise, but at his suggestion, it was delicious!! Kudos to Eric. Kudos to Burtons. If in the area again, we will certainly return!

Update: We ate here again tonight and our service was even better than last time! Our server, Eric, was excellent and very knowledgeable about gf. He explained the processes at Burton’s for ensuring gf every time and was so accommodating to us. We felt very safe eating here and our food was wonderful. We shared the steak kabobs (menu special) and the California chicken sandwich. We also tried the torte again and had the ‘trio’ which consisted of chocolate cake, mascarpone cheesecake with blueberry compote, and a berry cheesecake. Each came in a little single-serve jar. The experience was excellent and definitely safe for celiac!!
Original review: Boyfriend had swordfish risotto and I had a steak sandwich. Meal was good but the dessert is where it's at!! We had the chocolate torte with raspberry sauce and ice cream and also the pecan praline tart (?) which was warmed and deliciously smothered in caramel, served with ice cream. We would go back for the dessert alone!

I had forgotten about this place when we got here. After a 20 min search online under hangry conditions, I finally came across Burtons again. I was SO RELIEVED! They really are a rare treat. The manager prepared my meals and brought them to me. They take every precaution to keep you safe and fed well. I can't say enough good about their food and service!
Yes
Staff asks right away if there are food allergies. You get a special plate and manager brings food with gloves.
Yes
Best service since diagnosis of celiac. Asked about allergies from the host to the server and beyond. Had my first gluten free crab cake that wasn't like eating sandy crab. Highly recommend.
Staff were very knowledgeable. Gluten free menu was extensive and delicious!

We were told that one of the founders of this restaurant has Celiac Disease, which explains a lot about their our great experience. There are only 3 or 4 items on the large menu that can not be made gluten free. They have a separate fryer and take great care to avoid cross contamination in the rest of the kitchen as well. Gluten free food was even delivered by a different server. The food was fantastic. The Buffalo Chicken dip is amazing. We ordered a second. My daughter was able to eat gluten free fried calamari for the first time. She also had a half order of risotto- which was the size of a full serving compared to other restaurants. She was served gluten free rolls for the bread service- a first for us. She also loved the gluten free chocolate torte for desert. She was so happy! She had more food choices here than at any restaurant she has been to since she was diagnosed with Celiac. We are in the area on vacation and we're so impressed by the restaurant, and lengthy list of options, that we plan to go back today before we leave town! I just don't think you can go wrong with this choice!
Yes
Amazing dinner. Clearly marked menu. The meal comes on square plates so that you know it is gluten free. You will enjoy your experience.
We were extremely impressed with the precautions taken at Burtons Grill to ensure our daughter received a completely Celiac friendly, gluten-free meal. The waiters are very well informed and knowledgeable about celiac disease, and the manager herself brought our daughter's dish to the table separately and then explained that all gluten-free dishes are served on square plates as an added precaution. Food was tasty, too!

I was SOOO excited to eat here again. We were last at this location about a month ago (after eating at the one in VA Beach years ago), and while they're a bit pricey, the food was amazing and left me craving more.
Well, this time was not the same experience. We have been repeatedly told that they 'take food allergies very seriously' (and the waiter for another table used same words this time too- not our waiter though).
The service was awful. We got dirty cups, with 1 refill after sitting in heat on patio (would have brought it up to server, but couldn't find him). Non GF rolls brought to table and as an after thought, a GF one was offered. It made it to table right before food showed up. All food was run together, and while we noticed the plate shape was different, we were previously educated that only managers run 'food allergy' plates and they NEVER come out with other food. Not the case with this order. I was going to mention it, but I was hot and hungry, and our waiter disappeared, so we started digging in.
Thats when we discovered that 'medium well'- even with a "no pink" center explaination from the hubby, got me a hamburger that was mostly 'medium', with some parts 'medium rare', and the staff agreed. (not my waiter at time, bc he never showed back up- my fam was almost DONE eating when I flagged down a different server and explained what happened). They did offer to make it right by bringing soup or a salad, something quick so I could finish up eating with my fam, but I ordered a burger bc I wanted actual food. And to top it off, idk if it's the roll, the fries or the tiny bit of burger I ate, but something glutened me.
SO very disppointed. I was so happy to have found an amazing place, that took great strides to ensure the most 'allergy friendly' food possible, but after the cruddy service and the "we're gonna discount your food off the bill"- uh, no joke. We still paid $50 for 1 adult, 2 kids and I got to go home hungry. We won't be making that mistake again.

We were visiting Charlottesville for the day and first went to the historic mall thinking it would be a good place to find dinner but then left and drove to Burton's Grill because of the high ratings on TripAdvisor and on Find Me Gluten Free. Our waitress, Diamond, was awesome. Two of the four of us are gluten free and they wanted friend pickles after seeing them on the gluten free menu on a sandwich. Diamond said no problem and had some made for us as an appetizer. Everyone's food was good. Between is we had the short+rib grilled cheese sandwich, the California chicken sandwich (GF bun), maple chicken sandwich (GF bun), and salmon with slaw. Nobody was disappointed. Diamond even brought out GF Udi's rolls for the two that are GF (in addition to the normal bread/pesto plate). Wish this chain was up in Michigan!
Yes
The Cobb salad I ordered was Celiac safe, however it was VERY small and was mainly lettuce. Would not eat here because the portions were very small and the prices were expensive for what you get
If there were more stars I would give even more!! Gluten free menu is plentiful and varied with every item amazing! Staff VERY well versed in all GF needs and very pleasant and helpful. Dedicated cooking areas, fryers etc. even many GF desserts to choose from!! Best we've ever found!! Don't miss it!
Yes
Best celiac-friendly restaurant in the area!
even brought us a GF roll before dinner!
As soon as we came in they asked if anyone needed a gluten sensitive menu (awesome) and the waitress also asked immediately if anyone had an allergies. I had the tacos and fries from a dedicated fryer! Awesome. I have celiac.
Yes
Really good food. I didn't have any issues with cross contamination. The waitress made me feel very comfortable eating there. One of the owners has celiac disease.
Yes
Burtons Grill is the safest place to dine in Charlottesville for people who have Celiac Disease. The staff prepares food in a separate kitchen, uses dedicated fryers, and serves gluten-sensitive food on square plates. (All other food is served on round plates.) The menu is extensive and the service is always pleasant.
Yes
I have celiac and have never had a problem dining here. The staff is incredibly kind and friendly and are very conscious of allergies, with the kitchen never failing to serve a delicious meal that is also safe to eat. My recommendation however is to stay very alert, if you are brought your order on a circle plate instead of a square, then there was a mix up and you should alert the server to it. Overall 10/10 I'm a Burton's regular and always enjoy the night's that I choose to eat here.
Yes
Delicious food that we keep coming back to, but I have experienced cross contamination. It's best to eat here at slower times. I've only ever gotten sick at popular times. Considering the lack of celiac friendly dining in Charlottesville, this is a good choice for lunch or dinner.
had chicken sanbwich. The chicken was tough and dry. The sandwhich was flavorless and the fries were soggy.
Great gf menu with many choices. They even make a gluten & dairy free risotto! My wife is very sensitive....we ate here twice with no issues. You will love this place!
Yes
Went there for graduation dinner. Awesome menu and very knowledgeable about celiac disease and how to handle food. First time I have eaten out without fear in a long time. Will be back.
Yes
black bean burger was delicious. the restaurant is gluten free by default for all of their offerings. if you want pasta or bread they have gluten free options also

First time here and very impressed. As others said extensive GF menu, owner has celiac, wait staff extremely knowledgeable, food came out marked and by a separate server. Will definitely return.

SO Thankful I was able to try Burton’s while on vacay.. the GF Clam Chowder and crab cakes were outstanding! The waiter asked if preference or “allergy” and someone else delivered my GF food rather than together with the rest of my family.. no issues and I am sensitive.

If I could give this place 10 stars I would. Not only was the food amazing, but I got to eat French fries for the first time in years because of their dedicated fryer. My server (Bryan) was so knowledgeable and helpful with everything. One of the first questions he asked us was if anyone had any food allergies. He took the time to explain the menu to me and my husband and explained how only employees who were specifically trained in food allergies can handle your food. All gluten free food comes out on a square plate, whereas other food comes out on a circular plate. He was super informative and had taken the training to be able to handle my food for me. I did not get sick from anything and left feeling full and happy. I will be back for sure!

There were a lot of GF options that were clearly marked. The GF items in our takeout order were separated from the non-GF food and clearly labeled. The food was ok. If we lived in the area, we'd possibly go back, but the value wasn't worth the price. It was about $40 more than what we spend for our family (plus we had less person).
