I just got back from lunch at the Basil Box. Although they have some gluten containing products they have always said they are made in a separate area of the restaurant. The build your own box from the front section is supposedly all gluten-friendly items and that there is no gluten kept in that area. Today, after ordering my food, I noticed they had GLUTEN containing spring rolls located behind all the sauces. Big cross contamination risk. I hope I don’t get sick as it typically takes a few hours. I have lost my confidence in their ability to serve me safely and will think twice about going back.

I was told everything is gluten free although they aren't a gluten free establishment. I haven't had a reaction to any of the food there.
Majority if not everything is marked gluten friendly.

Truly underwhelming on all fronts. Their menu looks amazing. But they were out of some ingredients due to supply chain issues and were unable to answer any questions about what was in the replacement ingredients, which made us wary of ordering those items. Staff seemed really checked out -- I am aware that no one at a restaurant like this is paid enough to care, but it doesn't make for a great experience. One thing my companion ordered was still cooking, so they made my box, but his took almost 15 minutes more to come out. So we didn't even really eat together. Food tasted okay, but I wouldn't go back.

All the bowl makings are gluten free, so I still have a relatively high level of confidence when ordering from here, but I do miss the comfort of when the entire menu was gluten free.

I got one of their boxes and it tasted really good! They mark gluten free items on the menu, their boxes seem to be the easiest thing on the menu to make gluten free. Not sure about their other menu options being gluten free. They also have prepacked gluten free sweets from a dedicated gluten free company.

Server did not know what gluten is and only pointed at the signs that are marked gluten friendly. No effort was done to prevent cross contamination as no gloves were changed, some utensils shared, prep space was shared with gluten-containing foods, and I saw gluten-containing foods would splash into other containers. It just did not feel safe and I did not want to take the risk. I gave away my box to a friend and they said it tasted okay but portions were small for the price. Celiacs should be very cautious here.

Very accommodating and polite staff, explained what is gluten free and how food is prepared, and even let us try samples before ordering (for flavour and spice preferences). We had a build our own box.

Eat here regularly, it’s pretty tasty and I’ve never had a reaction at Queen St W. Location. Often get a noodle or spring mix base ( or a combo) and Ive had the steak, shrimp and chicken. Food seems fresh, staff always nice and efficient.

Some gluten items so ask first. But lot of gf items like pad Thai
No longer a dedicated gluten free restaurant. They bake gluten cookies in the same kitchen, so wheat flour on surfaces. Basil Box was my go-to when in Toronto, but they made me so sick I missed an important event.

Everything was not GF, staff seemed to have a rough idea of what might be GF, but bao buns are topped with the same toppings as the boxes, leading to similar odds of cc to a Subway restaurant.

Knew I was very safe eating here. The rice could have been more flavorful but otherwise this was exactly what you’d expect from a fast casual spot that does focus on fresh.

The entire establishment is gluten free and so no danger of cross contamination on site. Food is tasty and nutritious - build your own meals. Reasonably priced. Recommended for lunch especially. Perfect location if you are shopping at Eaton Centre.

Yummy food! We order from Basil Box (via food delivery services) when we need a quick, healthy meal. I cannot say, however, that it’s entirely safe for celiacs. Their sauces don’t list the ingredients, so for me, it’s a bit difficult to fully trust. For those who get serious reactions, you may want to be a little extra careful here.

Great food and a gluten free kitchen, although the staff informed me that the food is only considered “gluten friendly” due to possible risk of cross contamination in the supply chain. Most likely safe, as no gluten containing ingredients are used in the kitchen, but I’d still be careful.

Everything on the main menu is gluten free. They have added some "street kitchen" items during the pandemic that are not all gluten free, however when I reached out to them they explained that they take cross contamination seriously. The meatballs are incredible! I also love their chicken box with peanut sauce!

I placed an order through Skip the Dishes. It says the satay beef is gluten friendly so that’s what I ordered. They called me from the restaurant saying the satay beef is the only thing not gluten free. I am glad I put in the notes that I have celiac disease or they would not have called me. They should probably update the menu so no one gets sick. I ended up getting the lemongrass chicken and it was very good.

This was posted to a local group by the founder. Hope it helps!
Hi everyone,
First post here and I’m trying to help promote my business, especially during these difficult times for restaurants. Feel free to remove it if it is not allowed.
My name is Pete and I’m the founder of the fast-casual restaurant chain called Basil Box.
We currently have 16 locations across Canada in Ontario, Alberta, and BC. Our BC locations include 810 Burrard (Burrard & Robson) and our new store opening at the new Amazing Brentwood in August!
Everything we currently serve on our menu is inherently free of gluten. Last year we did rebrand brand ourselves “gluten-friendly” instead of “gluten-free” because we became aware of the law to officially label as “gluten-free”. As a relatively small but growing chain, we don’t have the funds available to put towards scientific testing on all our foods to ensure we are under 20 ppm gluten content per Health Canada regulations to officially label “gluten-free”.
The majority of our items we make in house and the few items that we bring in from outside suppliers we carefully look at the ingredients deck.
Our website with location list can be found at www.thebasilbox.com
We hope to serve you soon!
