Love this dedicated GF and very V friendly place, great fresh food, I never get sick here and the service is always great, menu changes each week and the Spa upstairs is GF/V friendly as well, a must try. Much better then the other places in Pittsburgh!
Amazing gluten free options! From real food like pasta to deserts like meringues and the cutest mini macarons. Service is excellent. Everything is freshly made so expect a brief wait but they have fresh roasted coffee and comfortable seating to wait.
This is the first time I felt the need to write a review on this app after using it for 8 months. Extremely satisfied with this place!! I HIGHLY recommend. Some of the best quality food I have had in awhile! You can tell there is quite a bit of time and thought behind all of the food choices and it is very reasonably priced for the level of quality. Be sure to follow on Facebook to see the weekly menus. The entrees I got were excellent and the desserts just as good (swear the cream cheese brownie might be the best brownie I've ever had). It's a bit of a drive for me but absolutely worth it and I will definitely be back.
I eat lunch here regularly. Some of my favorites are the rice bowls, black bean soup, avocado fries and various pastas. James, the owner and chef is terrific and very knowledgeable. Ask him for some home grown and made hot sauce. He will also do special items like cakes and breads with notice. I know there are negative reviews of him but he has always been friendly and helpful to me. Everyone has a bad day once in a while.
For that posted great food, but he's rude. You are correct all around. He's a true French baker in all respects. There were times in the past he had someone helping out in the front on the register. But I haven't seen that in awhile. It takes a lot to engage the man. He is an excellent chef. You just need to ask him the right questions. I'm thinking he might even be a bit Asperger's and just lacks some social skills. I have spent some money there at times.. my daughter's baby shower cake was nearly $100 - standard round, plus I bought another $100 of things (bread and such) for the party. He is sort of matter-of-fact over it all. He would do better with a friendly person up front; however, if it he does have Asperger's he probably can't keep a person. Just try to engage him in coversation or avoid it and try to understand there is definitely a personality or aspie thing going on. And, for the record, I am a psych evaluator.
Excellent customer service, always very helpful. Quality fresh food, be it lunch or somethings sweet. Each time I am in Pittsburgh I stop here for lunch and a sweet. Did I say they have a number of vegan GF items as well? The lunch menu changes every week and is always very yummy, and only 10 minutes from the airport or 20 from downtown.
the food was the BEST gluten free I have ever had in a cafe or restaurant. the owner was the rudest ass I have crossed paths with in a very long time! My selections were basically 1 of every single item displayed. My total was $75 and not only did I not get a smile or thank you, he made me feel like I was inconveniencing him. It was not busy, there was only one other customer and he was already consuming his food while reading the newspaper. it did not appear that he was just trying to get opened for the day I mean it was 10 in the morning I didn't hear any timers going off or see him put anything into or take anything out of an oven and again in reference to the time 10 a.m. it's not as if he were trying to close up for the day. I know that I cannot say I won't go back because the food is very very delicious but he is a pompous ass hole! I give the food at 5 I give the owner a zero!
I am revising my rating. While the food is excellent the owner/cook is awful. I only rated the food in my first review. Thought he was having a bad day and let his rude behavior go the first time. Visited a second time and he was just as rude. Welcomed me when I arrived but when I asked questions about the food he literally rolled his eyes and was condescending in response. I tried to engage in convo and asked about his reason for be so progressive and offering such a wide selection of gluten free and he said "it is what sells. You know I'm in business and that is what you do, sell what sells" this was w a "duh" attitude. Well I am a business owner and had just come from a network meeting and in my opinion treating customers w basic respect is required to sell anything. I will not be back ever.
Was in the bakery when the last client wrote the review, the chef did say Hello Ladies 3 times, told them to let him know if you have any questions. Yes there was a service person working on the fridge. He as well said I have the items in the fridge just read the tags, they are in the other fridge. I would say he has a soft voice not rude. I love the items here, been here a number of times when I am in town. The lunches are a must try.
Wow! What a wonderful find. Thank you Find Me Gluten Free for telling me about this gem. Everything we ate was incredible. My non celiac fiance even checked the menu as we were eating because he couldn't believe it was gluten free. It most certainly was as I had no reaction. Can't wait to go back!
This place is absolutely Ah-mazing! My husband and I both tried the fresh GF pasta and we both agreed that it is by far the BEST pasta (gluten and non-gluten) that we've ever had!! We are staying in Pittsburgh for 5 days and we plan to visit this spot daily!
This is THE BEST gluten free bakery and cafe in Pittsburgh metro area. The quality is easily better than many of the most top quality gluten free products I've enjoyed at restaurants, cafes and bakeries across the country. Many of the items are so delicious that I often have to double and triple check whether or not they are in fact gluten free. The constantly changing weekly menus for cafe lunch items are posted at the beginning of the week and many times I find myself planning my weekly travels around what's being served on any given day. Top recommendations would have to be the GF Pirogies, Veggies And Pasta, chocolate cake with raspberry layers, mocha brownies, large soft pretzels, cheese bread, chocolate and farmer's cheese mousse and even the dog biscuits have seemed to be a hit. If you're passing through or live in the area and you are gluten free, or not, cafe chocolate is a must.
How can anyone give this place a less then 5 stars? Who else has as many many GF items as Cafe Chocolade? Who else has 25 + pastas, lunch, quiche, 20 plus sweets every day and 25 flavors of macarons and they make pierogi, ravioli, tortillas, crepes who does this in the Pittsburgh area!! This place is a gem!
Tiffany I was there when you had your pretzel and I told you how wonderful it was, I read what you wrote and they did have 19 different hand made filled chocolates, the chocolate mousse cake, the chocolate and vanilla chocolate chip cupcakes, the chocolate pistachio mini tarte, the milk chocolate cheesecake, the 6 different chocolate macarons, the chocolate white chocolate dried cherry biscotti, the chocolate chocolate chip biscotti, the pistachio milk chocolate biscotti, the apricot and chocolate chip biscotti, and the chocolate chip cookie was not enough chocolate for you. Out of the 22 trays I had on display that's 50%. Things like my pierogies, tortillas, crepes, apple strudel, quiche, lemon meringue cake, farmers cheese mousse, fruit tarte, 14 different pastas, lunch specials crab cakes and baked salmon of course their is not chocolate. About the pretzel yes be it GF or regular a pretzel is bread, and who else makes GF soft pretzels anyway? About the name when you go to Giant Eagle do you see eagles?
This is by far the best gluten free restaurant/bakery in Pittsburgh!!! Unlike others in the city, the pastries have flavor instead of too much sugar to mask the flavorless products!!! We tried the quesadilla and salmon, not only was it a great gf meal, but one of the best meals I've eaten out!! Keep up the great work! Wonderful hidden gem
The food is excellent but the menu is confusing. They need to hire out someone to make it logical. I ordered a hamburger and all of their croutons are gf but the bun was not which I found out half way through eating it. The owner/ chef has a terrible attitude. He made me feel awful for not ordering a gf bun. There are no signs for if you should sit and order or go to the counter so we sat and no one came so we went to the counter and got eye rolls and told the chef was too busy...THEN a woman came to our table. Definitely do not take children. all glass table tops and they treat you like crap. I have celiac and so do my children so our options are limited. We went for my sons birthday. Will Not go back. Even the most tasty food isn't worth it.
The best gluten free I have had in the Pittsburgh area. No GF taste of fell. Not heavy or grainy like most places. The pasta, bread and all the pastries if you gave them to a gluten person they would not know it is a gluten free item. The quiche is the best I have ever had and the macarons rock!!!
I've been to Café Chocolade and I do enjoy many of their GF baked items. They are all very flavorful. That being said, I have to believe that all of these 5-star reviews are bogus. The reviews have the same themes in them ("Great parking," "I live in Moon and used to go to the East Side," etc) but what made it certain for me is this: I simply cannot believe that so many people in Pittsburgh choose the incorrect "there" when speaking of THEIR products! This makes me sad too, because I believe the food is good and of quality and the owner seems nice. But the parking is nothing fancy (about 5 spots only) and the place is tiny and off the beaten path.
This is the best place in Pittsburgh, I used to go to the East Side not any more. This place is so much closer and much better. There is always something new, so clean and fresh. I love there multi grain bread, I have given it to some of my not GF friends and they did not know it was GF. It is really that good!! I love there pastas and there lunches they have every day, great! It is a small place but very comfy. They have out door back yard garden seating when weather will let you. Its very nice out back. Then they have a full service day spa up stairs do not miss that. I real gem in the Burgh.
I have been going here for two years now and they just keep getting better, making more new items and enlarging there choices for GF items, the best pizza crust in the Burgh, bread, rolls, pastas, lunch items, Quiche, candies and the Best Gourmet Pastries you will find in the area, I used to go to the east side but I live in Moon and I hated the drive this place is great. Clean, always new items great different lunches and the best pasta and pizza crust to take home for dinner, you must try this place.
This place is small, clean but amazing!!!!! They had run out of there daily special, but I was able to get a tomato penne pasta with veggies and a salad with not too much of a wait. It was amazing. I used to go to the east side for years, but have been coming here for around 6 months and everything is sooooo much better and not dry or starchy, I really recommend this place. There candies, pastries, pizza, pasta, bread, rolls are truly the best in the Burgh.
There pasta, pizza crust, bread, pastries, lunch and candies are amazing. It is so nice not having to go to the East side any more, I live in Moon and this place is only 5 minutes from my house, I call in the morning and reserve there daily menu item and pick it up on my drive home for dinner so easy and always like it wrote "amazing". I love this place you should try this place you will not be disappointed and now you do not have to travel to the East side.
