I don’t have celiac but a ln intense gluten sensitivity that makes me sick. The cooks here need better training in how to treat allergy meals since one of the guy used the same cooking utensils on everyone’s food including mine and another person with an allergy. I had to tell my waitress to get help since I was so uncomfortable.
Sitting at HuHot watching my family eat. Waitress offered to get me bowls from the back. I asked to speak with management or someone about getting the food from the back. A supervisor came to the table and stated they would get my vegetables, meats, and sauces from the back. When I stated I wanted to order only gluten free food, he went to get me a list. He returned after several minutes with a list of all the items that have gluten/wheat. I said I had no idea what items DIDN’T have gluten. He said he could get a list. Since my family already had been eating for several minutes, I told the supervisor to forget my order. I didn’t want my food to arrive as my family finished (and there was only one cook for a busy crowd). Highly doubt any meal could have kept from getting cross contaminated anyhow. What a disappointing and hungry evening.
HuHot does not have a gluten free menu but does have an allergen list and a list of gluten free sauces. Ask them to clean a spot on the grill and use different utensils, if necessary.
HuHot has a great system for anybody who has celiacs or allergies. The waitress brought a paper with their menu and allergen information. The egg drop soup is great, and the Asian-style salad can be gluten-free if it’s ordered without the ramen on top. At the buffet, there are zucchini noodles and pad Thai (rice noodles). Some of their sauces are listed as containing wheat, but are processed to contain less than 20 ppm (gluten-free by FDA guidelines). They were also really good about cleaning and sectioning off the grill and using new utensils. If you are worried about cross-contamination, there is food in the back, and they also have a gluten-free tamari (soy sauce). The desserts are not gluten-free, but the meal was plenty.
The manager came and check to see what my allergies were. Help me pick the things I needed. The Kooks an excellent job cleaning the grill and making sure there wasn't any cross-contamination.
I called ahead and spoke with the manager, Caleb James. I was a bit concerned since the stir-fry tables were full of noodles, which are easy for cross contamination. Caleb went over the top to work with me and my extreme sensitivity. He wrote down all my vegetable and meat choices from the table, went in the back kitchen, and created a bowl of fresh vegetables and my protein. He had me choose a GF sauce, scrubbed down an isolated section of the grill, and personally cooked my food to perfection. I rarely eat in an Asian-style restaurant due to the risk, but I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and dining experience. My husband was happy with his (normal) meal too. No reactions, just appreciation. What a treat!
I agree with the other review. It's phenomenal! Stay away from the crab and meatballs and noodles. Manager will bring out the rice noodles that are gluten free. Otherwise, all is gluten free including sauces. They clean the grill extra and use specific spatulas while cooking and serving. I really appreciate this place and their attentiveness!
The staff does their best and I was impressed with how clean they try to make everything for people with allergies. If you ask for allergy menu, they will give you a yellow bowl and a full laminated chart of all their food. The cooks scrape and wash the grill the best they can, use clean utensils, use clean dividers, and clean their hands before touching your food.
That said, it is a buffet.
There is a huge selection of single ingredient food to choose from. The GF sauce are marked and are together at one end of the sauce bar to avoid cross contamination from drops of other sauces. The cooks will separate your food entirely upon request, and toppings are single item servings as well
All sauces are gluten free. The pad Thai noodles are gluten free. When you go up to them to cook let them know gluten allergy. They were amazing at making sure that the cross contamination was not happening. When I went up they knew right away and asked me to double check. They were amazing with helping me ensure I can still eat here and not worry about what I could eat. Employees here are amazing
