From their allergen list: We have worked diligently to remove wheat gluten from all our sauces, dressings, and proteins. Natural glutens remain only in our flour and wheat tortillas and in two desserts--tres leches and key lime pie. This means that we offer "oceans of gluten-free options" in our menu. All of these items are gluten-free: all enchiladas, all tacos, all salads (without the flour or wheat tortilla), all nachos, and our chicken tortilla so up...which uses corn strips.
Has the nachos with chicken, black beans and cheddar cheese with queso on the side. I have had costa vida in SLC many times but this location was great too. Changed thier gloves when I said I was gluten free and did not have a reaction.
It was wonderful! The older Hispanic gentleman took the time and initiative to wash his hands and change his gloves as soon as I mentioned that I would be ordering a gluten free meal! I didn’t even have to ask!
Good knowledge of cross contamination. All the ingredients are GF. They have corn tortillas that they prep and cook in foil to reduce cross contamination .
Told staff I was celiac, first member changed his gloves(yay) filled the bowl with chips, then passed my bowl to a member who literally just rolled a tortilla and DID NOT change gloves, added to the bowl, then put his tortilla contaminated hand directly in to grab a meat strip to put on top before baking the nachos. When I pointed out my food was now glutened the response was well there's always the risk of cross contamination. Extremely disappointed given they were at the GLUTEN FREE EXPO and had great samples. Don't waste your money
I got a salad with a corn tortilla. When I asked for a “gluten free salad” the person preparing my food changed gloves, and I was even asked if could have dairy, as they prepared the rest of my salad.
I talked with the workers and they asked the manager but that didn’t help because I still got cross contaminated. I ordered a salad with some of their sides, black beans, chicken, and salsa. They have too much gluten in the store or too much flour must be everywhere or they season with gluten products or something. Anyway, stay away if you are sensitive!
Food is great and the staff is well trained in gluten free. Every time I've told them I'm gluten free they have changed gloves before doing my order and I've never had any issues.
All I had to do was say that I couldn’t have gluten cross contamination and the staff immediately changed their gloves and washed their hands. Without me needing to ask, they grabbed some food from the back for me that hadn’t been touched yet. The staff was very well educated and super nice about it all! Everything except for the tortillas and a few desserts are gf.
Costa Vida is the only fast food chain experience I trust. This Logan location was very careful with my food... changing gloves, placing food on separate foil sheets and sharing the need for gluten free handling with all employees.
Great experience. All GF except flour Tortilla, pie and cookies. Goes through oven in individual container. Fast food.
Very fresh and good tasting food! Aware of gluten allergy and took precautions.
The staff were friendly and knowledgeable about safe GF protocols! They changed gloves, washed hands and made my daughter’s tacos on foil to avoid cross contamination on the grill
This is a great place. Searched this site for a Mexican restaurant and didn’t really find anything too appealing. Gave this a try and I’m glad I did! Sauces are all gluten free. I had enchiladas with chicken. They changed their gloves for me. Salsas and guac were good too. My husband liked his steak quesadilla and honey shrimp.
i eat here almost every day. i’ve never gotten sick! i sometimes order online during work so i can’t always ask for a glove change, and it hasn’t been a problem for me yet (i’m very sensitive). the only items on the menu that aren’t gluten free are the flour tortillas and desserts.
the staff is well informed, and more than happy to accommodate to allergies.
i usually order a baja bowl because i don’t love corn tortillas.
Pretty good most of the time. Ask them to change gloves and get rice and beans from other bins not by where they make flour tortillas.
This place is probably fine if you’re not Celiac. But after watching everyone handle freshly cooked flour tortillas I don’t think it’s possible to eat here with cross contamination. I did not feel comfortable ordering and I’m not one to be over the top when eating out.
easily one of the safest experiences i’ve had eating out. i got the kids taco with a corn tortilla and beef, and had no reaction at all. all i had to say was that i had celiac, and they knew to wash their hands, change gloves, wash utensils, and even protect my meal from the shared grill with aluminum foil. they were so incredibly kind about it and didn’t make me feel like an inconvenience at all.
Super cautious about cross contamination. Yummy food. A great road trip stop!
Not all costa vidas are safe but this one does a fantastic job. Lettuce and cheese are always served with tongs. Very good location.
I only get nachos here. The staff are very willing to change their gloves for me (they will start doing so right away at the mention of Celiac), but I do feel like I have to watch carefully on the line to make sure they don't touch something else or add something from an unsafe container. Most staff are pretty good but there are a few who are not or who just work on autopilot. I don't feel like I could ever order online and trust that it was safe, I do feel like I need to watch it be created. That said, if I do watch and make sure everything avoids CC, I do not get sick from the food.
This location doesn’t extremely good job of taking care of our gluten-free meats. They are always cheerful about it. Thank you for making it a go to option.
Went here and got a quesadilla for my daughter. They had corn tortillas and when they grilled it, they put foil under it to protect it from the grill top. They also changed their gloves and double checked what was gf and what wasn’t with our order. I felt they did a good job and will be back.
Always feel safe at this location. I usually have a salad or nachos of some kind and if you notify them of Celiac or gluten allergy they immediately wash hands, change gloves and get your food from fresh bins or a different location to avoid CC. It's always delicious and I definitely prefer going here than almost anywhere else in Tooele County! There's very few places I feel safe eating at in Tooele/Stansbury Park. Thank goodness this is here!
I absolutely love Costa Vida I go to the one on foothill drive all the time. I have never had a problem. This Costa Vida . . . Was terrible. I asked for gluten free and the worker rolled her eyes at me, she then went and changed her gloves. When she came back she wiped down the grill that was just used to cook flour tortillas and proceeded to put the gluten free tortillas on it?! I immediately called her out and she said she needed to cook the tortillas, which also not true, the gf Costa Vida tortillas are not cooked. I then asked for a salad without any tortillas , but they didn’t have any lettuce and she had to go in the back and chop some. Even though when we came into the Costa Vida, there was nobody there. Extremely disappointing for an establishment that I normally love. Don’t know if this was just the workers on the management
This restaurant uses a buffet line to prepare food like a Qdoba or Chipotle, so there is a chance for cross contamination in all ingredients that might have a utensil or hands in them that have touched a flour tortilla. I'm extremely sensitive and chose not to eat here.
Not all the workers seem know about the gf protocols but when they do, they are very good at following them; changing their gloves, getting certain foods from the original containers etc.
I had a sweet pork salad. The person that helped me wasn’t sure about my questions but the shift manager helped out. Gloves changed, one person took my order through the whole line. Fryer is GF and tortilla strips are safe.
Only thing in the restaurant with gluten are the flour tortillas. Watch your food and it looks at least as safe as Chipotle…honestly maybe a bit safer because they use utensils for lettuce and cheese where other places use gloves.
Staff was kind and knowledgeable. Changed gloves and washed their hands without being told. They also let us “tweak” the side of chips to have melted cheese instead of having to order a huge order of nachos for a child.
Server immediately changed gloves and washed hands when I mentioned a gluten allergy, in addition, he pulled my tray from the back and used the serving counter in the back to prevent cc, and walked my tray himself through the rest of line, communicating with other team members that he had an allergy order. Very impressed with how he handled everything! Everything is gf except for the flour tortillas.
The allergy menu is very thorough and helpful. I can’t have dairy or gluten, so had a salad bowl with chicken and guacamole and chips. Very good.
This location needs more training about cross contamination. Yes, she changed her gloves when I asked for a gluten free meal, but then she came back to the line and put her gloved hand down on the flour tortillas!
My husband and I will drive the extra few minutes to specifically cone to this location over another one slightly closer to our home. The staff here are kind and professional and the level of service has never been lacking. The food is delicious and we've never gotten sick or had a bad experience here.
For those with Celiac or who are highly sensitive to gluten, I do not recommend the corn tortillas as, while they do not contain any gluten themselves, they are cooked on the same surface as the wheat-flour tortillas. I personally always opt for the baja bowl and haven't had any issues at this location.
On Costa Vida's website, their Nutrition Calculator page also has an allergen filter (and an itemized Allergen Info section below it) that can filter for the following allergens and dietary preferences:
· Dairy
· Eggs
· Gluten
· Nuts
· Preservatives
· Soy
· Sugar
· Vegan
· Vegetarian
Additionally, they note that their "hot items are prepared with low sodium".
Told them I had an allergy to gluten, they washed hands and changed gloves. They did a good job. The only issue I had is when they were refilling the lettuce on the line, they used their potentially contaminated gloves to do so…
I saw that they had good ratings and wanted to try a new place for dinner last night. It was a decision I regretted. When I asked about gluten free options the staff somewhat knew what was gluten free, but then would second guess their answers. The food was not good at all. I got the chicken tacos with the corn tortilla and extra side of rice. The chicken was dry and burnt. The rice was cold and didn’t taste good. Lastly, the corn tortilla was semi okay. The only good thing was the key lime pie. That tasted more like a cheesecake than key lime. After eating the food I felt sick and threw up. I do not recommend this place even though you see good reviews.
