Most Shake Shack locations offer gluten-free buns for burgers. A lettuce wrap is also an option.
GF bun available, bit dry but not too bad. The burger itself was pretty good. Was told the GF bun is toasted separately from the regular buns. I spoke to someone at the counter and they gave the kitchen a heads up there was an allergy order coming up. You can order on the kiosk and add allergy instructions. There is a protocol they are supposed to follow for allergy orders. Sadly no dedicated fryer.
Had the gluten free bun with the Shack Burger. When asked, the staff said that they take extra precautions if the gluten free request is due to an allergy, including hand washing and ensuring the food doesn't come into contact with other gluten-touched areas. Burger was good, but the bun fell apart. Didn't ask about fries or anything else so I can only speak to the bun. Didn't feel sick afterwards.
We stopped here in a pinch. They have a gluten free bun but I’m nervous with chains. But the manager was there and when asked about gluten free he explained the whole system, how they use separate tools, regular buns are toasted in a toaster and gluten free buns are the only bread that goes on the grill. He even offered that the fries were not in a dedicated fryer before we asked. It wasn’t busy and based on his knowledge I felt safe. It was a good burger, the bun got really mushy (probably rice based) but was nice in a pinch, no reaction. I’m not sure how I would feel about all locations but this one is a safe location for me.
Fries are unsafe because of a shared fryer, but burgers on a GF bun are safe! They recently updated the app and either removed the ability to mark allergies or made it really hard to find, so be careful when ordering with others getting gluten-containing buns.
Staff seems to be well trained or understanding about cross-contamination. I made an online order and they put my gf burger in the same container as my girlfriend’s (a regular burger), and they were touching. When we told them about the issue and that I am celiac, they remade the burger for free, and gave us free ice cream for the trouble.
Good food, good people.
Amazing fine fast food unlike the shake shack in the airport this is heaven if your celiac and visit Manhattan. Prices are reasonable compared to other restaurants in New York. But, food, quality, variety, options… I’d go as far as saying that as fast food if it’s for celiacs this place is unmatched from what I’ve experienced. The vibe inside is great too btw
If you’re hungry, go somewhere else! The only thing I felt safe having here was the milkshake. The manager said they use malt for some flavours, which is stored close to the GF flavours, but they have a dedicated spinner for the GF flavours. The manager told me that the fries go in the same fryer as breaded items, so it isn’t a matter of feeling “brave.” The fries are not Celiac safe. He also admitted that the burger meat is cooked on the same grill as where the buns are warmed, and in close proximity. But they have a dedicated toaster for the GF buns. He said “we’re gluten friendly, not gluten free.” So great if you just have NCGS but not great for celiacs. Ordering on the kiosk is also confusing for what is labeled GF or not. I would suggest ordering at the kiosk. Overall staff are VERY honest and up front about what gets cross contaminated where.
Very busy and you order via a kiosk. The staff member that helped us was not knowledgeable. When ordering on the kiosk, you have to make sure you select the allergy button. You can always ask for a manager too. Fries are not safe but burger was great (with GF bun) and the custard was delicious.
We went to Shake shack because most of the other locations had pretty good reviews. They had gluten free buns which is a plus but they make their fries in a shared fryer with a high chance of cross contamination. They did not aware us of this until after we placed our order, which was fine until they offered us a gluten free shake in return. They did not specify which shake it would be, but said it would be gluten free and apologized for the inconvenience. They came with the shake and immediately my partner tastes cookies. I (who can have gluten) tasted it as well and immediately asked the server if the cookies contained gluten to which he replied yes. When we asked for the ingredients in the shake he cannot tell me and cannot find out. Then he cracked a joke “risk it for the biscuit”… So I ask for the manager. She came and said that it did in fact have gluten in it and apologized. This restaurant has bad communication between its employees and managers- to the extent that they don’t know what is inside their products, or just don’t care. Be careful at this location, the managers and staff are clueless.
They have tablets to take the order and on the tablet you can mark your order with an allergy as well as buy a gluten free bun for your burger.
However, they do not actually receive any allergy information when it prints in the kitchen. So unless you specifically talk I a worker, they will prepare it with no precautions.
I had them remake my order and they changed gloves reluctantly and cleaned the grill, but were resistant to doing so.
You can see into the entire kitchen, so I could watch them handle my food, but they do not make any effort without specifically speaking to a worker to actually keep any food separate.
They have no signs anywhere in the establishment to declare that cross contamination can occur or what allergens may be present despite offering the ability to mark allergens on their ordering screens (though it won't print out for kitchen.
I would never eat here again despite not getting sick after having them remake my food.
I didn’t realize Shake Shack offered gluten free items. I was so excited to be able to eat here. I’m gluten intolerant and can handle small amounts of cross contamination. So I don’t know if the fries would be okay for celiacs. The gluten free burger bun was delicious! It had a great texture and didn’t fall apart as some will do. It was also nice to have a selection of shake choices that don’t contain wheat. Surprisingly, I had a sugar cookie holiday shake. Everything was so good, that I had to make sure to spread the word!
I had the gluten free bun Hamburger. I do not think it was gluten free. Next day I had blood in stool and will not talk about the rest. I did not check with waiter that the bun was gluten free. I think they brought the wrong bun. Tasted to good. Self server when you order. I did check gluten free. Make sure you ask the server before you eat.
Gluten free buns are available, fries are in a separate fryer from their other deep fried (gluten) items. Some of the shakes are gluten free (but none of the holiday ones are). The person we spoke to who seemed to be a manager was really helpful.
Fries are not safe, but the gluten free bun is prepared separately and pretty decent. Yummy burgers! They put in an allergy order. Staff was knowledgeable and avoided cross-contact well. Shacksauce is unfortunately not gluten free either. Limited options, but a good burger!
We get the gluten free burger/bun a few times per year and despite being very sensitive we have never had an issue. Be sure to note “allergy” on the order. Since this is a fast food chain we always talk to the manager when ordering. The frier is not dedicated and the fries are not safe.
Patties and bacon cooked separate from the buns.
